The Sagrada Família, designed by Antonio Gaudí, is a symbol of modern Catalonia. In 2024, the Liebherr cranes will begin their pivotal role in the construction, particularly focusing on the Tower of Jesus Christ and other key sections like the Chapel of the Assumption.

Selected for their high lifting capacity and adaptability, the Liebherr 710 HC-L crane can lift up to 64 tonnes with a 55-meter radius, making it ideal for the tallest sections of the basilica. The 125 HC-L crane will assist with the chapel and cloisters. Their design minimizes the impact on surrounding structures, essential for the densely built area.

One of the main challenges was erecting the 710 HC-L crane at a height of 54 meters, which will be extended to 130 meters and anchored to the Tower of Jesus Christ. A custom bracing structure was developed to support this phase. The cranes’ assembly required meticulous planning due to stringent safety standards and the crowded, tourist-heavy location.

The project involves close collaboration between Liebherr, local supplier Grúas Cerezo, and Liebherr’s Tower Crane Solutions department. Their combined expertise ensures precise planning and execution, crucial for this high-stakes project. Rhenus Port Logistics is investing in a new transshipment terminal at the Rhine port of Basel-Kleinhünigen, Switzerland. Emil Egger AG is handling the logistics for the prefabricated concrete elements, using four Liebherr cranes to maximize efficiency during construction.

The new Terminal 4 spans 7,300 square meters and consists of five hall sections. Equipped with modern technology, the trimodal terminal will feature five bridge cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 32 tonnes, excavators, forklifts, a rail intake hopper for bulk goods, and advanced scales for road, rail, and water transport.

To manage the prefabricated concrete supports, Emil Egger AG deployed two mobile cranes—an LTM 1350-6.1 and an LTM 1650-8.1—and two crawler cranes—an LR 1250 and an LR 11000. The LR 1250 handled the formwork and transport of 64-tonne diagonal supports, loading them onto low-loaders for internal site transport. The LR 11000, Switzerland’s largest crawler crane, installed crane track supports and external bone girders, moving 211-tonne supports over a 59-metre radius and 265-tonne supports over 45 metres with a 72-metre boom and V-frame configuration.

Michael Egger from Emil Egger highlighted the importance of the V-frame, which has become indispensable for their operations. The VarioTray was also crucial, allowing the crane to lift, move, and shift supports with over 400 tonnes of suspended ballast.

The 1,000-tonne crawler crane extended wall panels made from cast-in-place concrete to the final height of the hall and installed 14 bone girders, each involving a 140-tonne lift at a 44-metre radius. The LTM 1350-6.1 lifted and tilted the diagonal supports into place, while the LTM 1650-8.1 closed the gaps in the concrete wall panels and installed the last six bone girders, lifting 90-tonne beams at a 14-metre radius.

The new terminal will significantly enhance cargo handling and transportation capabilities in the region, demonstrating Rhenus Port Logistics’ commitment to advancing port infrastructure.

HS2 (High Speed Two), the UK’s flagship transportation project, connects the West Midlands and London via a 140-mile high-speed rail line. The underground sections of this route are created using massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), each 170 meters long and weighing 2,000 tonnes. These machines excavate soil and install tunnel walls, consisting of thousands of parts, many of which are extremely heavy and require careful handling during both assembly and dismantling.

Align JV, a joint venture of Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick, and Sir Robert McAlpine, is responsible for the Central 1 section of HS2 Phase 1, including a 16km twin-bore tunnel through the Chiltern Hills. Mammoet supported Align JV in assembling two TBMs at the South Portal site and later dismantling them at the North Portal near Great Missenden.

Mammoet’s Senior Commercial Manager, Simon Crawley, assessed the North Portal site’s limitations and space constraints, determining that a 400t crawler crane would be sufficient for dismantling, as opposed to the 600t crane used for assembly. Using Move3D software, Crawley, Project Manager Rhys Burley, and Project Engineer Antreas Michail created a detailed visualization and animation of the dismantling process, convincing Align JV of the feasibility of using a smaller, more cost-effective crane.

Two TBMs, responsible for the south and northbound tunnels, required dismantling. A 400t capacity CC2400 crawler crane removed the largest components, with an LR1300SX crane assisting in lifting the heaviest cutter head. Components were then transported using Mammoet Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) to laydown areas, where additional cranes offloaded them for further dismantling. The cutter head’s unknown center of gravity and the TBM’s exit angle posed challenges, which were addressed by using air hoists for safer and more efficient component leveling.

Mammoet’s comprehensive approach, combining skilled personnel, specialized equipment, and innovative thinking, ensured a safe and efficient outcome. By making small adjustments to the project scope and proving their benefits through visualization, Mammoet delivered a successful dismantling operation, showcasing their capability to adapt and meet the complex demands of large-scale infrastructure projects.

With a maximum capacity of 40 t and the ability to lift 11.1 t at an 80 m reach, the MDLT 1109 is ideal for demanding projects such as nuclear plants, bridges, and major infrastructure developments.

Building on the legacy of the MD 1100, the MDLT 1109 features significant updates, including a 2.45 m K850 mast that offers a smaller footprint for easier transport and quicker assembly. Its low-top design, less than 6 m above the jib, enables seamless operation alongside other cranes on a job site. The crane is also available with two different lifting hoists: the 150 HPLTM 100 or the 270 LVF GH Optima.

Modern features of the MDLT 1109 include P+ load curves for higher hoisting capacities, the Potain CCS (Crane Control System), and the new Potain CONNECT telematics system for remote access to crane data, enhancing performance and durability. An optional Potain Cab-IN internal mast lift is available for operators.

The storm traps, which are infiltration and detention systems, work alongside jellyfish filters designed to hold and slowly release water, capturing debris like plastic bottles. These underground tanks store initial runoff, which carries street pollutants, and regulate its flow to treatment plants, preventing overflow and untreated discharges into watercourses.

Sarens, one of the leader’s in heavy lifting and crane rental services, executed the project by lifting and installing 100 pieces over four days. Each module of the stormwater storage gallery weighed 15,000 pounds and covered 40 feet of the trench. Sarens used an AT 160 crane as the main boom for optimal productivity and minimal mobilization.

Neil Docherty, Sarens Project Manager, explained that water first passes through filters to remove solid contaminants before reaching the tanks. The water is then gradually sent to purification stations, reducing river contamination and flood risk. This project marks a significant step towards sustainability.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Sarens completed the project efficiently, providing relief to the community by mitigating future flood risks. Sarens’ experience in the Canadian construction industry includes projects like the Union Station renovation, where they lifted and installed iron girders for the flying garden, and the Lafarge cement factory refurbishment, which boosted annual cement production.

Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, a main road in Frankfurt, had to be fully closed to accommodate the crane’s setup. The LTM 1650-8.1 crane, assembled in a T3YV2EN configuration with 150 tonnes of ballast and a 77-meter luffing jib, began its work at 23:00 on a Friday evening.

Challenges arose due to the presence of an underground railway line beneath the crane site, limiting support pressure to two tonnes per square meter. A combination of steel plates and bongossi timbers was employed to distribute the load effectively.

The lifting operation commenced at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the crane extending its boom to 51 meters to reach the required height of 120 meters. The task involved removing old chillers from the 95-meter-high Kastor tower and installing new units to modernize the building’s air conditioning system, completed in 1997.

Despite the complexity, all work had to be finished by Sunday to reopen the road for Monday morning traffic. The logistical feat required precise coordination and swift execution, marking a successful modernization endeavor for the iconic Frankfurt skyline.

The damaged Hammesberg Wupper Bridge, constructed in 1965, is undergoing replacement due to severe damage. The bridge, closed to vehicles over 30 tonnes, faced a speed limit of 30 km/h. To minimize closure time, a prefabricated parts construction method was chosen.

Two Liebherr mobile cranes, an LTM 1650-8.1 from Autokrane Schares GmbH and an LTM 1450-8.1 from Dornseiff Autokrane & Schwertransporte GmbH, performed tandem lifts to place eight 85-tonne precast concrete elements onto the abutments over the Wupper.

The unique tandem lift involved the LTM 1650-8.1 lifting parts from one side of the river, reaching its lifting capacity limit. The LTM 1450-8.1, positioned on the other side, took over, with technicians in a safety cage attaching the hook to a special triangular crossbeam. Schares project manager Eric Reichmann highlighted the necessity of this approach, stating that even an 800-tonne crane wouldn’t have sufficed due to space constraints.

The tandem lift, utilizing a 160-tonne triangular crossbeam and an additional mobile crane, successfully installed eight 32-meter-long reinforced concrete girders across the Wupper in two days. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic in the spring.

The T147, standing at 42m with a jib length of 45m and a tip load of 3.58t in Ultralift, is ideal for small to medium-sized construction sites.

The crane was installed by Assistedile’s operations team, with a Raimondi field technician overseeing the process. The T147, with a maximum lifting capacity of 8t at two falls configuration, was erected over two days using a 200t mobile crane. It is expected to remain onsite for 10 to 12 months until the completion of the project.

Friso highlighted the crane’s versatility and excellent performance, especially when equipped with a 37kW hoisting gear, which allows for a maximum lifting speed of 105m/min and a drum capacity of 620m. The Class 110 series cranes, equipped with the ConCore control system, offer improved error diagnostics, faster commissioning, enhanced safety, and modularity in mechanical and carpentry parts.

To stay abreast of Raimondi’s latest technologies, two Assistedile specialists participated in Raimondi’s in-house product training program. Facing limited space for the crane and requiring seamless logistical planning, Thömen professionals utilized the LR 1800-1.0 with precision, employing 90 tonnes of central ballast, 230 tonnes of slewing platform ballast, and a 42-meter-long main boom.

The LR 1800-1.0, renowned for its power and global transportability, boasts a transport width of three meters and a maximum weight of 45 tonnes. Equipped with the LICCON2 control system and the BTT-E remote control, the crane’s superstructure can be operated remotely, enhancing monitoring and efficiency in assembly processes.

During the operation, the LR 1800-1.0 flawlessly lifted two bridges, with load cases of 125 tonnes and 160 tonnes, respectively. The first bridge was installed during a night-time S-Bahn closure, while the second remained in use for ongoing railway operations. The German Railway recently completed the renewal of a bridge over the Riß in Biberach, employing a Liebherr crawler crane LR 1750/2 from RIGA MAINZ, a crane and heavy haulage company. The project involved lifting out old bridge sections and placing new 285-ton bridge parts on freshly constructed abutments.

The old bridge, dating back to 1912, spanned the Riß, a tributary of the Danube in Upper Swabia, with abutments three decades older. Originally, the plan was to construct a new bridge west of the old one, but environmental concerns led to a change. Instead, the new bridge was built to the east on a meadow using prefabricated parts, lifted into place by the 750-tonne crawler crane LR 1750/2.

Salcef Bau GmbH awarded the contract to RIGA MAINZ, and the project faced tight space conditions. Owner Uwe Langer noted, “The LR 1750/2 was the optimum crane size for this job. It is compact and yet powerful.” Two large drilling machines created twelve bored piles for the new abutments. After lifting, the bridge sections were cast with concrete into the abutments, resulting in a ten-meter-wide and twenty-meter-long structure.

Despite the challenges, the assembly and crawler crane teams completed the reconstruction efficiently. The railway line was closed for only five days during the project, showcasing the precision and effectiveness of the LR 1750/2. The entire operation, including setup, dismantling, and ten days of operation, took just over two weeks, with the LR 1750/2 proving to be the ideal choice for the complex task.

Patullo highlighted the crane’s ability to switch promptly from two falls to four falls and reverse, facilitating the lifting of large equipment without downtime. With an 86kW hoisting gear, the LR273 achieves a maximum lifting speed of 204 meters per minute and a drum capacity of 980 meters, ensuring excellent lifting performance and meeting project deadlines.

Avenue Building Corporation’s fleet includes seven Raimondi cranes deployed across various Toronto sites, and the success of the LR273 has prompted plans for two additional units in another key development in the city. Once completed, the 55 Charles Residences, a MOD Developments project, will contribute 665 residential units to central Toronto’s dynamic and ever-evolving skyline.

Crane operator Robert Fuhrmann praised the crane’s adaptability, stating, “As the day went on, the gusts got stronger, and I switched straight to the wind chart.” The crane’s advanced features allowed Fuhrmann to configure load charts that permitted work in wind speeds of up to 13.4 meters per second, well beyond the standard range.

The Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3’s ability to handle windy conditions is crucial for wind turbine operations, where unpredictable weather can disrupt schedules. Fuhrmann successfully navigated the challenging journey to the site, overcoming a six-kilometer gravel track with tight serpentine bends and gradients exceeding ten percent.
With its advanced ECOmode control system, the crane minimizes fuel consumption and noise emissions, automatically disengaging the pump drive when power is not required. The crane’s versatility extends to other applications, including lifting heavy transformer houses and construction crane assembly.

Felbermayr, the company operating the crane, has a vast portfolio covering heavy haulage, large transport, and infrastructure projects. The Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3, in service for around five months, has already proven its capabilities on various wind farm projects in Austria.

Despite the challenging conditions, precise teamwork and the crane’s advanced features ensured the successful replacement of the gearbox. ATS Cranes Lifts Five Bridge Sections For A3 Expansion In Luxembourg

ATS Cranes, a branch of Steil Kranarbeiten in Trier, together with their partners, accomplished a significant feat in late September 2023. They were awarded the contract to widen several bridges on the bustling A3 motorway that connects Luxembourg and France. The Pont Berchem bridge was one of these structures.

The A3 expansion to six lanes, including a hard shoulder and an exit lane to the Aire de Berchem Quest service area, necessitated the creation of a new bridge. This remarkable bridge spans 85 meters without any supporting pillars, presenting a challenging task for Frederic Kleinhans, Operations Manager at ATS Cranes in Frisange, Luxembourg.

Using their Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 and LTM 1300-6.3 cranes, ATS Cranes had to rotate five girders weighing between 87 and 92 tonnes by 90 degrees before installing them onto the abutments. The meticulous planning of the crane positions was crucial, as the 90-degree rotation and placement had to be executed in a single operation.

The relatively new LTM 1650-8.1 crane, equipped with a 45.3-meter boom, a 17.5-meter radius, and 180 tonnes of ballast, played a central role in the nighttime construction. The LTM 1300-6.3 crane, ballasted with 94 tonnes, had a 29.4-meter boom and a 15.3-meter radius. Both cranes were operated by experienced professionals who demonstrated exceptional precision during the challenging slewing process, with the massive steel girders passing just centimeters from the cranes’ luffing cylinders.

The entire operation took place over a weekend, benefiting from good weather and minimal wind conditions. Tandem lifts are not only impressive but also complex to plan. ATS/Steil used their CAD software to calculate and visualize various set-up configurations and boom combinations based on factors like footprint, overhangs, payloads, start and end radius, and ground pressure. This meticulous planning ensured that the construction site setup was precisely executed without on-site measurements during the night.

Frederic Kleinhans commended his highly motivated and well-trained team for their dedication and expertise, highlighting their ability to complete the demanding task with the utmost precision. The last girder was successfully placed into position at 3 am on a Sunday morning.

We can have them remanufactured by Manitowoc and have great working cranes for another 12-15 years at a fraction of the cost of purchasing newer cranes,” Lis explained.

Moreover, the extensive experience and infrastructure Maxim Crane Works possesses for managing Manitowoc 2250s add further value to the remanufacturing project. Mammoet equipped the crane with Liebherr RemoteDrive for precise remote control in tight conditions.

The electric LTC 1050-3.1 offers a compelling blend of environmental friendliness, customer benefits, and efficiency. On the road, it is powered by a low-emission combustion engine meeting exhaust emission stage 5 standards, providing 243 kW (326 hp). This engine can be fueled with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to pure diesel.

During crane operations, operators can choose between the combustion engine and the electric motor based on the specific operating conditions. The newly developed electric motor offers 72 kW, delivering nearly the same performance as the 6-cylinder engine. The electric model includes the electric motor, a transfer case, and necessary control technology. This intelligent yet straightforward solution facilitates seamless transitions between diesel-hydraulic and electro-hydraulic drive. While full performance requires 125 amps of site power, practical operation is possible with 63 amps. Additionally, the crane can be operated using an external “battery pack,” like the Liebherr energy storage system Liduro Power Port (LPO), if the construction site lacks the necessary electrical infrastructure.

In a complex operation carried out in Adana, Turkey, last year, Sarens demonstrated their expertise in heavy lifting. The task was performed on behalf of their client, Gemont Endüstri Tesisleri İmalat ve Montaj A.S., and the project owner, SASAPolyester San. Tic. A.S., and it involved a range of specialized equipment as CC8800-1 with a boom booster, LR1750, CC2400-1, small mobile cranes and special spreaders.

One of the key challenges was that the project site wasn’t suitable for cranes larger than the CC8800. In response, Sarens devised an engineering solution that utilized the CC8800-1 with a boom booster.

In total, Sarens managed to lift 41 heavy units, including impressive components such as a 700-tonne, 22-meter oxidation reactor, a 700-tonne, 52-meter rectification column, and five 350-tonne, 52-meter silos. Installing each silo involved the CC8800-1 crawling approximately 100 meters before lifting in conjunction with the LR1750.

The equipment was transported from Germany in just eight days, although customs clearance added another 26 days to the timeline. Subsequently, it was efficiently moved to the job site within three days and assembled in a mere 18 days. Transporting the primary crane necessitated the use of 100 trailers between the port and the job site, while 12 jib sections were delivered via 12 trailers from Croatia.

Despite facing challenges such as a devastating earthquake, strong winds, and heavy rainfall that caused work delays, the Sarens team successfully completed the demanding lifts. Their efforts were recognized when the client’s project manager personally thanked the on-site team, which included two project managers, two site supervisors, eight to ten crane operators, and one engineer.

Both LRH174 cranes were placed on a ballast base with a final configuration featuring a 36-meter mast and a maximum radius of 50 meters. These 10-ton luffers boast a tip load capacity of 2.25 tons and can achieve a maximum lifting speed of 190 meters per minute, thanks to their 45kW hoisting gear with a drum capacity of 600 meters.

To minimize disruptions at the busy government site, the decision to mount the cranes on a ballast base was crucial. This approach eliminated the need for extensive excavation work required for permanent footings. Additionally, the LRH174’s hydraulic luffing system operates quietly compared to traditional mechanical luffers.

The LRH174 is designed for ease of installation, contributing to efficient onsite operations. Ground-level assembly of the crane’s jib, hoisting winch, and rope reeving streamlines the process. Notably, the LRH174’s compact 10-meter out-of-service boom is ideal for narrow jobsites, and its hydraulic system ensures smooth and swift luffing movement.

Michael Clark noted the increasing demand for luffing jib cranes like the LRH174, particularly in projects with oversailing issues where the 10-meter out-of-service radius proves invaluable during decision-making.

As the Parliament restoration project nears its final stage, both LRH174 cranes will be dismantled in the coming months. They are slated for reallocation to two other jobsites at the start of 2024, showcasing their versatility and adaptability in meeting diverse construction needs.

Raimondi Middle East has recently deployed four MRT111 flat-top tower cranes in Jumeirah Village Circle, one of Dubai’s rapidly expanding master communities. These flat-top cranes were erected in May 2023 to contribute to the construction of a five-storey residential building.

Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Middle East, highlighted the substantial growth in the UAE’s construction industry, encompassing infrastructure, residential, and mixed-use development projects. The deployment of these four flat-top cranes marks Raimondi’s continued involvement in key projects across the country, with more than 30 machines already in operation, and plans for further expansion in the coming months.

The MRT111 cranes were installed onsite in their final configurations, offering heights ranging from 33m to 48m and jib lengths of 42m and 36m. All of these machines are equipped with Raimondi Deluxe R16 crane cabins and are 8t flat-tops with a hoist gear capacity of 30kW, capable of lifting at a maximum speed of 100 m/min.

Considering the project’s delivery schedule by contractor TownX Development, the MRT111 model was deemed well-suited for the jobsite, delivering excellent performance in terms of load capacity and hoisting speed. A comprehensive site study was conducted to determine the optimal crane positioning and installation, particularly since the site is situated between a primary school and occupied residential buildings. Planning also factored in onsite logistics during commissioning.

The MRT111 continues to be one of the best-selling crane models in the MENA region. Over the past three years, Raimondi Cranes has expanded its presence in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with a notable number of the manufacturer’s models installed in Qatar and the UAE. Wael Hasan expressed confidence in closing 2023 with approximately 20 additional cranes onsite in the region.

Wind energy in Switzerland accounts for a small fraction of the nation’s energy mix, contributing just 0.25% of the total electricity production, primarily dominated by hydropower. However, recent developments in the Jura mountain range in the canton of Vaud, near the French border, have added six new wind turbines to the landscape. These turbines, boasting a combined output of 13.8 MWh, were installed during the summer months using cutting-edge equipment from Liebherr, a renowned crane manufacturer.

Emil Egger AG, a crane company, deployed its two most powerful hoisting units, the LR 1700-1.0 and the LR 11000, to navigate the challenging terrain at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. The heaviest lifts occurred during the installation of the generators, with the LR 11000 handling a massive 71-tonne load, including the hook block and slings. To tackle the towering assembly heights of around 100 meters, a 114-meter-long main boom was fitted to the crane.

While the rotor components were visually striking, they weighed slightly less than the generators, totaling 65 tonnes. Specialized equipment was used to maneuver the 40-meter-long rotor blades into a vertical position during the lifting process.

Meanwhile, the LR 1700-1.0 worked on erecting other wind turbines nearby, featuring a 99-meter main boom and a 12-meter jib set at a ten-degree angle to ensure ample lifting height.

Emphasizing the choice of Liebherr equipment, Managing Director Michael Egger noted, “All the crawler cranes in our fleet are from Liebherr. We rely completely on the Liebherr brand for crawler crane technology because these modern machines are extremely practical and user-friendly. The machines are simply ‘state of the art,’ and Liebherr’s service leaves little to be desired.”

Emphasizing their satisfaction with Liebherr’s support, Egger added, “If we have a major problem with our equipment, a mechanic is on-site within two hours. And that’s worth a lot.“

Ensuring access for hotel guests, suppliers, and emergency vehicles was crucial throughout the project.
The challenge for Steil Kranarbeiten was the need for a 65-meter radius, an underground tunnel system, and limited space. The task involved lifting significant materials over the hotel building to construct a 220-square-meter terrace. The presence of 17th-century tunnels beneath the site ruled out positioning the mobile crane close to the construction area.

Frank Nicklas, head of Steil’s Saarwellingen branch, had meticulously planned the project and selected the LTM 1150-5.3 from their extensive crane fleet. This yellow-painted fleet comprises around 120 cranes, including mobile, crawler, and special cranes. Nicklas recognized that the LTM 1150-5.3 was the ideal choice due to its large radius and the space it would leave for hotel operations and deliveries.

With the help of the LTM 1150-5.3 and its innovative VarioBase system, the team completed approximately 150 lifts over two weeks. The crane’s precision was vital, as it handled suspended construction elements, including one-tonne steel girders.

The success of this project has prompted Steil Kranarbeiten to acquire another LTM 1150-5.3, ensuring they have the right machine for future jobs. This crane will be stationed at their Saarwellingen branch, further enhancing their capabilities. Jaso Tower Cranes, a prominent player in the construction industry, has left an indelible mark on over 80 floating caisson projects worldwide. One of their most recent achievements is the Kugira project by Acciona, which, in 2022, saw the construction of six colossal floating caissons at Punta Langosteira, A Coruña. This landmark project established the site as the largest floating caisson dock in Europe. These imposing caissons stretched 60 meters in length, spanned 24 meters in width, and weighed a staggering 15 tons each. To bring this vision to life, Jaso Tower Cranes relied on the formidable capabilities of two High Top cranes supplied by their distributor, Alfeco. The J300N.A, equipped with a 75-meter reach, a maximum load capacity of 12 tons, and 2.7 tons of tip load, worked in tandem with a J110N crane with a reach of 55 meters and an impressive 8-ton maximum load capacity. These cranes, known for their precision and ease of assembly, proved ideal for the demanding requirements of this project, which included handling substantial yet delicate loads.

In Bilbao, another collaboration with Alfeco resulted in the successful completion of numerous floating caisson projects. Sarens has played a pivotal role in the construction of what is set to become one of Africa’s highest bridges, the Al Hadarat Bridge in Cairo. Over the course of several weeks, Sarens executed two lifting operations on behalf of Arab Contractors, bringing the bridge project one step closer to completion.

In the initial phase, Sarens successfully lifted and installed eleven massive steel beams, each weighing 150 tonnes and stretching 41 meters in length. To accomplish this, the crew utilized a CC4800 crane configured for SSL (Super Slim Lift) with a 66-meter main boom and 270T SL CW. After carefully hoisting each beam from its original position, the crane was expertly maneuvered into its designated location. The dedicated four-person team flawlessly executed eleven such lifts over the course of a single week.

The choice of equipment for these lifts was crucial, and it performed admirably throughout the operation. The CC4800 crane was transported to the site following its completion of a prior project. Rigging preparations consumed five days, with the team working within extremely confined spaces, at times having only a mere 10cm of clearance.

For the subsequent series of lifts, Sarens deployed the CC2600H crane, equipped with a 78-meter main boom, for another challenging high-altitude operation. The same four-person crew then installed 63 beams, each weighing a substantial 90 tonnes and measuring an impressive 50 meters in length. After carefully lifting each beam from the trailer, the team adeptly positioned it into place, successfully completing 63 such lifts within a span of three weeks.

Once again, the choice of crane was paramount due to its capacity, and precise positioning was a critical aspect of the planning phase, given the necessity for a series of tightly coordinated lifts. The crane was brought to the site following its completion of a prior project, and rigging preparations took three days. The crane’s positioning was particularly challenging, with only a scant 15cm of clearance in its immediate surroundings.

Working in close collaboration with the client, project manager Mohamed Abd El Nasser and country manager Essam Adel ensured meticulous attention to detail, from determining the number of lifts required to pinpointing exact lifting locations during installation.

Despite contending with some challenging winds, the team successfully carried out the lifts necessary for this iconic project. The world’s gaze is fixed upon the Al Hadarat Bridge project, and Sarens takes immense pride in its role in bringing this remarkable endeavor to fruition!

Vienna’s bustling Mariahilfer Straße, known as “Mahü” to locals, is set to introduce a new shopping destination. The Lamarr department store, named after Austrian film icon Hedy Lamarr, will be constructed on the site of the former Leiner furniture store. The modern yet traditional-style department store will include a hotel, restaurants, and a publicly accessible green roof garden. To build the structure, Austrian contractor Habau Hoch- und Tiefbaugesellschaft purchased a WOLFF 8033.16 Cross crane, which will work alongside two other WOLFF cranes. The construction of the building shell is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Due to the location’s high foot traffic in downtown Vienna, a unique crane solution was necessary. Wolffkran devised a crane concept where the WOLFF 8033.16 was first erected using a mobile crane. This crane was then employed to install the WOLFF 7532.16 Cross, which, in turn, erected the flattop WOLFF 6023.8 Clear crane. This strategic approach minimized the use of a mobile crane on the busy shopping street. The cranes were installed at the beginning of 2022 and have been crucial in transporting concrete, formwork, and reinforcement for the construction of the in-situ concrete shell. However, the most challenging phase awaits when the final crane needs to be dismantled. Due to the tight construction space, the WOLFF 7532.16 and the WOLFF 6023.8 cannot be dismantled using a mobile crane. The WOLFF 7532.16 will first dismantle the WOLFF 6023.8, and then the 8033.16 will dismantle the 7532.16. This process involves splitting the 13-tonne counter jib into two parts, requiring careful handling and support structures.
Habau and Wolffkran have a long-standing collaboration and have worked on various projects together. The Lamarr project is expected to be completed by 2024, joining their portfolio of successful endeavors, such as the Harbor Portal in Linz and the Vienna Twenty Two residential quarter.

Raimondi Middle East has successfully deployed eight flat-top cranes for the rapidly growing Aljada megaproject in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, developed by Arada.

These cranes were erected in April 2023 with the assistance of Raimondi Middle East’s operations team and are actively involved in the construction of the Sokoon apartment blocks. The jobsite encompasses five residential buildings, featuring a total of 482 homes along with commercial space in Aljada’s cultural neighborhood, known as the Naseej District.

The addition of four Raimondi MRT111s, one MRT159, and three MRT294s brings the total count of Raimondi cranes employed on the project to 22.
Expected to remain on-site for approximately 14 to 16 more months, these crane models were specifically chosen based on their technical specifications, compliance with the contractor’s requirements, and the demanding project timeline.

“We selected cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 8 to 14 tons, and maximum lifting speeds of 136 m/min,” explained Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Middle East. Due to the high number of cranes to be installed and the congested nature of the site, careful planning and positioning were essential to avoid any overlap, Hasan added.

The four MRT111s-8tn are currently operating with a jib length of 36 meters and final heights of 60 and 48 meters. These versatile cranes offer excellent performance in terms of load capacity and hoisting speed, equipped with a 30kW hoist and a drum capacity of 450 meters, lifting at a maximum speed of 100m/min.

Featuring a jib length of 44 meters and a 45kW hoist power, the MRT159-8tn has been erected with a maximum lifting speed of 136m/min and a final height of 66 meters. This flat-top crane is renowned for its exceptional load diagram and ease of installation.

Sharing the same maximum lifting speed as the MRT159, the three MRT294s on-site boast a hoisting gear of 73.5kW, a maximum lifting capacity of 14 tons, and final heights of 54 and 60 meters. These cranes, erected with jib lengths of 36 and 60 meters, exhibit outstanding performance and durability in various climatic conditions.

The Raimondi Middle East operations team will continue to provide support for the construction of the Sokoon buildings, conducting monthly maintenance checks and performing necessary crane climbing procedures as the project progresses, concluded Hasan.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity, Liebherr dealer Kranimex and heavy haulage specialist Tech-Mont tackle the obstacle of restricted access in Bratislava, Slovakia by employing an unconventional assembly method. A 40 LC top-slewing crane is airlifted into the city center via helicopter to aid in the construction of new apartments.

The project site, located in a burgeoning area with limited road access, presented unique challenges, including protruding edges of neighboring buildings and the disruption caused by tram traffic. A conventional assembly method using a mobile crane would have necessitated the suspension of public transport and the costly dismantling and reinstallation of tram power lines. However, the collaboration between Kranimex and Tech-Mont found an innovative solution in helicopter assembly.

Over the course of two days, using an MI-8T helicopter with a lifting capacity of three tonnes, the crane components, including tower sections, jib, and counter jib, were carefully transported from a temporary storage location near the Danube to the construction site, flying over the city’s rooftops. With eleven flights in total, even the heaviest crane part, a 2,750-kilogram slewing platform, was effortlessly lifted into place. Skilled service fitters from Kranimex received the airlifted components and completed the assembly of the top-slewing crane.

Patrik Šeba, service fitter from Liebherr dealer Kranimex, emphasizes the significance of strong and reliable teamwork in achieving this exceptional assembly, having previously collaborated with Tech-Mont on two other projects.

The Liebherr 40 LC crane, with a hook height of 30 meters and a jib spanning just under 25 meters, boasts a maximum lifting capacity of 4,000 kilograms. To optimize space, the crane is mounted on foundation anchors and features the narrow 63 LC tower system, with external dimensions of only 1.2 x 1.2 meters. Despite being built in 2006, the top-slewing crane continues to demonstrate its reliability, a testament to the exceptional quality and durability of Liebherr machines.

Expected to remain in operation until the end of 2023 for the residential project in Bratislava’s city center, the crane’s compact dimensions allow it to navigate the site effortlessly, facilitating various lifting operations such as the movement of bricks and concrete. Once its work is complete, the crane will be dismantled by helicopter, making its return journey over the rooftops of Bratislava.

Liebherr Crane Revitalizes Historic Church In Bad Reichenhall

Renovation work in the picturesque town of Bad Reichenhall, Germany, is taking place against the backdrop of majestic mountains. The focal point of the project is the restoration of the 12th-century parish church of St. Zeno, a listed historical building. However, the challenging ground conditions surrounding the church posed a significant obstacle. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Tradler-Baumaschinen and Liebherr, a suitable solution was devised to ensure the smooth operation of a top-slewing crane at the church site.

The primary concern revolved around the unstable ground caused by the adjacent cemetery. Furthermore, due to the constraints imposed by the cemetery, the crane and its substructure could only be positioned on the pathways between the graves. Overcoming this dilemma required an innovative approach. The solution involved the utilization of a gantry, a steel construction that provided unrestricted access beneath the crane. A concrete foundation with cement grout-injected micropiles was established, upon which a 6 x 6 meter gantry was placed. These micropiles, with a diameter of less than 30 centimeters, enabled the use of smaller and lighter drilling equipment. The paths were the only areas where foundations were set, ensuring the preservation of the graves. Subsequently, a mobile crane mounted a 250 EC-B flat-top crane with a 21 HC tower system and undercarriage onto the gantry. This configuration offered stability to the crane and allowed it to operate effectively above the graves.

This successful implementation was made possible by the longstanding partnership between Tradler-Baumaschinen and Liebherr. With a jib head lifting capacity of up to 2,850 kilograms and a maximum lifting capacity of twelve tonnes, this top-slewing crane proves to be a powerful tool for the project. Intelligent assistance systems like Micromove assist the crane operator in precise and smooth placement of building materials, crucial for preserving the integrity of the listed church.

Throughout the anticipated year-long renovation period, the tower crane will be involved in various tasks. Initially, it will assist in erecting scaffolding and a temporary roof system. As the project progresses, the top-slewing crane will remove a portion of the protective roof each day, allowing for the movement of materials within the roof truss. Given the reinforcement of the existing roof truss with structural steelwork, frequent transportation of heavy steel elements and other building materials will be necessary.

MAXIKraft has recently added another Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane to its fleet, making it the third of its kind in their lineup. In its inaugural operation, the crane successfully assembled a Vestas 5.6 MW wind turbine at the Dünfus wind farm near Cochem, lifting components weighing up to 100 tonnes to a height of 170 meters.

Maik Kanitzky, the owner of MAXIKraft, explains the investment decision, stating, “With its special configurations, the LR 11000 offers enormous lifting capacities for wind power assemblies. But it also offers flexible deployment options for other applications.” MAXIKraft utilizes multiple large lattice boom cranes manufactured in Ehingen, including LG 1750, LR 1700-1.0, LR 1800-1.0, and LR 11000 models. Steffen Lehmann, responsible for the deployment of these large cranes at MAXIKraft, emphasizes the importance of the highly flexible set-up versions and boom combinations offered by Liebherr’s lattice boom cranes. He praises the LICCON2 control system, which provides real-time information on various parameters such as load, winch pull, boom position, ground pressure, and center of gravity.

The brand new LR 11000’s maiden task took it to the Dünfus wind farm, where MAXIKraft was entrusted with erecting a Vestas 5.6 MW wind turbine. This impressive turbine boasts a rotor diameter of 150 meters, a hub height of 169 meters, and an overall height of 244 meters, making it one of Germany’s most powerful wind turbines. The heaviest component, weighing approximately 100 tonnes, is the gondola.

On April 19, crane operator Marco G. successfully lifted the gondola onto the tower using a special yoke, following approval from the site manager. This operation was estimated to take around two hours. The decision to employ crawler cranes was particularly advantageous due to the crane’s ability to travel about 20 meters on excavator mats to reach the assembly position. For the Dünfus project, MAXIKraft configured the LR 11000 with a Liebherr 8-cylinder 500 kW engine, utilizing the SL10DF2BV set-up version with a 162-meter main boom, a 21-meter lattice-type fixed jib, and a 42-meter derrick boom. The crane comes standard with six winches, which control the movement of two hook blocks, the luffing gear for the main boom and luffing jib, as well as the V-frame for ballast positioning.

After the completion of the last rotor blade assembly, the 1,000-tonne machine was disassembled and will be transported to the next site using over 50 trucks. The compact dimensions of the crane components, with a maximum width of 3.5 meters and a height of 3.2 meters, facilitate efficient transportation. The rapid expansion of wind power generation is expected to provide numerous spectacular opportunities for the blue/silver MAXIKraft crawler cranes. Celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, MAXIKraft and its group of companies possess extensive experience in crane services and heavy transport. With a fleet of over 150 units comprising various types and sizes of tugs, barges, and other equipment, Al Jazeera Shipping Co. Liebherr Mobile Cranes Used For Wind Power Line Construction

The success of Germany’s energy transition and the shift towards renewable energy depends heavily on the transport of wind power from coastal regions to the south of the country. To achieve this goal, new, high-performance power lines are essential. The largest project currently underway is the “Wahle-Mecklar” extra-high voltage line through Lower Saxony and Hesse, which is being realized with Liebherr mobile cranes from Albert Regel GmbH and other companies.

The “Wahle-Mecklar” project involves the construction of 555 electricity pylons over a distance of 230 kilometers, with only a small part of the route bridged with underground cables. This new power line is scheduled for completion in 2024, after four years of construction. Several Liebherr mobile cranes, including Regel’s LTM 1230-5.1 and LTM 1070-4.2, are being used to erect the pylons, which are up to 90 meters high.

According to Daniel Stawizki, a dispatcher at Regel, the LTM 1230-5.1 is the crane of choice for mast construction, with its 75-meter telescopic boom. It can manage almost all of these jobs without the aid of a jib, except for the largest of the pylons, for which a 32-meter fixed jib is used. For these larger pylons, Regel has also used their 300-tonne LTM.

Regel’s LTM 1070-4.2 is used to handle the individual lattice tower elements on the ground and to help assemble the components with the larger mobile crane. This compact 70-tonne mobile crane can carry most of its ballast on the road and is equipped with active and speed-dependent rear-axle steering, making it ideal for working in difficult terrain and reaching work sites quickly.

Regel has been providing cranes for the construction sites of the grid operator Tennet for the past three years, and according to Stawizki, they have already erected well over a hundred of the electricity pylons. If everything works out, the completed lattice tower will be up within a day in the evening. Regel has also used their LTM 1200-5.1 and LTM 1090-4.2 as a team on the construction sites along the route.

At their headquarters in Baunatal, Regel operates around 40 mobile cranes together with a depot near Fulda. With the exception of five machines, they all come from the Liebherr factory in Ehingen. In addition to crane work, Albert Regel GmbH also offers heavy transport as well as machine and industrial relocations.

Overall, the success of the “Wahle-Mecklar” project is vital to Germany’s energy transition and the transformation towards renewable energies. Sarens recently took delivery of the first unit of the new Liebherr LR 12500-1.0 crawler crane at the Port of Rostock on 1 April. Sophie Albrecht, a member of the Board of Liebherr International AG, handed over the symbolic key to Marc Sarens, Director & Member of the Board at Sarens. The Belgian company plans to primarily use the 2,500-tonne crawler crane in the renewable energy sector, particularly for handling offshore wind turbines.

Sarens chose the new Liebherr LR 12500-1.0 for its high capacity, which is especially important in the renewable energy sector where the individual weights of components are increasing. Carl Sarens, Director Technical Solutions, Projects & Engineering, stated that “the capacity of the LR 12500-1.0 is enormous,” and that the initial assembly of the new crane was successful.

During the symbolic handover of the keys to the LR 12500-1.0, Sophie Albrecht shared an interesting detail about the company’s founder, Hans Liebherr. She mentioned that the day of the handover would have been his 108th birthday.

Sarens named the new crawler crane “Straffen Hendrik,” after a long-time employee, Hendrik Sanders. Sanders has been with the company for more than 30 years and is known for his strength, goodness, and robustness as a project planner for large cranes.

The LR 12500-1.0 will be put to work in the port of Rostock, where it will lift 50 monopiles with a diameter of up to nine metres, a length of up to 90 metres, and a weight of more than 1,400 tonnes into the water in tandem lifts with a Liebherr LR 1800-1.0 over a period of about eight weeks. Together, the two cranes have a gross load capacity of up to 1,750 tonnes. The monopiles, which are the foundations for offshore wind turbines, will then be pulled afloat to a special ship that will transport them to the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which is currently under construction about 30 kilometres north of the island of Rügen.

German crane rental company, Schuch Heavylift, has recently expanded its rental fleet with eight new Grove cranes, ranging from 60 to 450 t capacity, over the past 12 months. The fleet includes a custom-built model via Manitowoc’s specialist consulting division, Lift Solutions. 

The investment in Grove cranes has expanded Schuch Heavylift’s capabilities, with a particular focus on the new Grove GMK6450-1 six-axle model, which shares the same design as the Grove GMK6400-1 but has an increased maximum capacity of 450 t. The GMK6450-1 also features a five-section 60 m MEGAFORM main boom, which delivers an impressive 136 m tip height when fitted with the optional 25 – 79 m luffing jib.

Schuch Heavylift’s GMK6450-1 has a unique feature of having the option of removing the boom, allowing it to be configured at axle loads of below 10 t. To optimize driving without a boom, a second suspension circuit was installed on the MegaDrive system, which adapts the chassis to the different axle loads. The crane was also delivered with the optional MegaWingLift attachment, increasing capacities at steeper boom angles, plus luffing and fixed jibs for greater jobsite versatility.

The Schuch Group, which has been in business for over four decades, owns and operates Schuch Heavylift from six locations in southwest Germany. Office Building At Luxembourg Airport Built With Liebherr

Liebherr’s seven flat-top cranes are playing a crucial role in the construction of the Skypark Business Center at Luxembourg Airport. The building, one of the largest timber structures in Europe, is a prestigious and challenging project that brings together architecture, functionality, and sustainability. The cranes, rented from Skyliners S.à R.L. rental fleet, are moving building materials just a few meters from the airport’s apron to the construction site.

The machines in use are Liebherr’s 172 EC-B 8, two 202 EC-B 10, one 285 EC-B 12, and three 250 EC-B 12 cranes, with jib lengths of 40, 45, 50, and 55 meters, respectively. All of them have aircraft warning paintwork and a maximum lifting capacity of up to twelve tonnes, depending on the model. The highest tower cranes on the construction site are a 250 EC-B 12 and a 285 EC-B 12, with a hook height of 69 meters. The lowest one, another 250 EC-B 12, has a hook height of 50.4 meters.

Thanks to their flexible adaptation to site conditions, the jib and tower elements in the EC-B series allow several cranes to work together in tight spaces without any issues. The cranes are equipped with assistance systems, such as the Micromove fine positioning mode, the Load-Plus short-term load increase function, and the ABB operating range limitation system, which increase handling performance, reliability, and safety.

Since the first crane was erected in December 2020, the Liebherr machines have been efficiently supporting structural work. The Skypark Business Center will offer approximately 100,000 square meters of space for restaurants, retail, fitness facilities, hotels, offices, and a kindergarten upon its completion in late 2023/early 2024. It is the first milestone for Airport City, a large-scale development project around Luxembourg Airport.

The new building is a Nearly Zero Energy Building, incorporating wooden construction, photovoltaic systems, rainwater collection, double facades, green roofs and terraces, and natural light to reduce its carbon footprint, energy consumption, and operating costs. Sustainability is already factored into the construction phase, as gravel from excavation is being used for the concrete walls and slabs of the parking spaces to reduce the number of trucks and cut down emissions.

The flat-top cranes will continue to work on the site until the end of 2023. All the cranes are from the rental fleet belonging to Skyliners, which has been specializing in the rental and sale of tower cranes for over 25 years. The company offers its customers a fleet of close to 100 tower and fast erecting cranes, ranging from 26 to 630 metre-tonnes, along with experienced service technicians for assembly, dismantling, and maintenance of the Liebherr machines.

DP World Antwerp Gateway has reached a new milestone in its ambitious expansion and modernisation plan with the arrival of three new quay cranes. These cranes, capable of handling up to 26 container rows on a ship, were constructed by ZPMC and join the existing fleet of 10 cranes at the DP World terminal located on the eastern side of the Deurganck dock.

The investment in these new cranes is part of DP World’s €200 million plan to modernise, expand and make the terminal more sustainable, which was initiated in 2019 and supported by the European Commission. The ultimate goal is to offer customers efficient, resilient and sustainable solutions.

Dirk Van den Bosch, CEO of DP World Antwerp Gateway, expressed his belief in Antwerp’s position as a global trade hub and gateway to Europe, and the company’s commitment to strengthening the competitiveness of the port and making it the engine of the Belgian economy. He stated that the new cranes will enable the terminal to handle projected volume growth in the years ahead and consolidate its position as one of Europe’s top ports.

Jef Lambregts, Expansion Project Manager, added that the terminal has already seen significant improvements since the investment program started in 2019, with the delivery of a new operational building and two automatic stacker crane modules. In addition to the three new cranes, three new automatic modules will be commissioned this year, and two more quay cranes will be added next year to bring the total to 15 ship-to-shore (STS) cranes. DP World is constantly investing in advanced equipment to increase its capacity for enhanced international trade flows.

Rolling one crane from the ship to the rail tracks on the dock side takes approximately four to six hours via a special footbridge. The unloading process is precarious and must be done in perfect conditions such as weather, visibility, wind and water level, and takes about a week. After this, the cranes will be connected to the high voltage grid, the movements will be adjusted, and the container registration system will be installed to commission the cranes by the summer.

The crane park at DP World Antwerp Gateway is capable of handling the largest container ships in the world, which can transport up to 24,000 containers (TEU). The latest cranes can handle up to 26 container rows on a ship, which is one row more than the current generation of container vessels. DP World’s investment in modernisation, expansion and sustainability will enable it to offer customers industry-leading efficient, resilient and sustainable solutions.

LTM 1650-8.1 Used By Foselev To Dismantle Port Crane

Foselev SA, a French crane rental contractor, has successfully dismantled an ageing port crane in Port-La-Nouvelle on the Mediterranean using its most powerful telescopic crane, the Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1. The crane had an 80-metre telescopic boom and Y-guying, which made it capable of handling individual components weighing up to 122 tonnes. The port, which is the third largest in France on the Mediterranean, handles a variety of goods such as wheat, fertiliser, coal, and oil. Three modern Liebherr mobile port cranes, including one LHM 280 and two LHM 420 models, now handle bulk and general cargo, rendering the ageing double jib crane over 30 metres in height obsolete.

The port authority commissioned Foselev SA, a nationwide rental company employing over 2,500 people with a fleet of 920 vehicles, including a large number of Liebherr mobile cranes, to complete the task. Its Foselev Sud Ouest outlet based in Port-La-Nouvelle coordinated the operation. The LTM 1650-8.1, Foselev’s most powerful telescopic crane, was selected for the complex job, and its T5Y configuration made it perfect for dismantling the crane components. The crane’s 80-metre telescopic boom and Y-guying demonstrated their strengths during the job, and the heaviest single component, the counterweight of the double jib crane, weighed 122 tonnes. The job was completed on schedule at the end of February 2023, satisfying the port authority.
The Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane delivers top lifting capacities on eight axles with telescopic boom lengths of 54 or optionally 80 metres. With lattice extensions, it can achieve lifting heights of up to 152 metres and radii of up to 112 metres.

Thierry Volatier from the relevant Foselev outlet, which coordinated the crane job, commented: “To achieve the low support pressure of 6 t/sq m required by the port authority, we had to reduce the surface pressure, so a 21 sq m support plate was placed under each of the four outriggers of the LTM 1650-8.1. The strong wind (Tra Montagne) was a challenge with speeds reaching up to 100 km/h. Although the Liebherr crane is designed and approved to operate in higher wind speeds, we suspended work for a few days for safety reasons.”

New Record Turnover Achieved By Liebherr In 2022

Liebherr Group, that operates in 13 product segments, announced a record turnover of €12,589 million in 2022, up €950 million, or 8.2%, from the previous year. Despite the challenging economic environment due to the coronavirus pandemic, Liebherr’s turnover increased in 10 of its 13 product segments. 

The seven product segments of earthmoving, material handling technology, deep foundation machines, mobile and crawler cranes, tower cranes, concrete technology, and mining reported a turnover of €8,561 million, 6.9% higher than the previous year. The six product segments of maritime cranes, aerospace and transportation systems, gear technology and automation systems, refrigerators and freezers, components, and hotels achieved a total turnover of €4,028 million, an increase of 11% over the previous year. 

Turnover increased slightly in the European Union, Liebherr’s strongest sales region, and grew strongly in North America, Central, and South America, Africa, and the Near and Middle East. However, the Liebherr Group achieved a net income of only €2 million in 2022, down from the previous year. 

The company invested €588 million in research and development, the majority of which was used to develop new products, including those using alternative drive technologies, such as hydrogenated vegetable oils (HVO), which can be used directly in Liebherr’s construction machinery, cranes, and mining machines. In the field of electric drives, Liebherr added six new models to its Unplugged range of battery-powered, locally emission-free crawler cranes, piling, and drilling rigs up to 400 tonnes. The Group also invested €863 million in its production sites and global distribution and service networks to expand its sales and service activities, among other things.

The Megastar ferry, which carries up to 2,800 passengers and 150 cars between Tallinn and Helsinki, prioritizes safety due to its high frequency of boarding and disembarking. As part of the safety measures, the ferry is equipped with life rafts, which are annually inspected and maintained to ensure their reliability in case of emergency. However, lifting these life rafts off the ferry, which weighs up to half a ton and is located 22 meters above the quayside, within a tight one-hour timeframe is a challenging task.

To ease the burden, the Estonian transport company “Sintravella” employs the Palfinger PK 135.002 TEC 7 crane, the first of its kind in Estonia. The crane, with a maximum lifting capacity of 30,000 kg and a reach of 36.6 meters, can handle the life rafts with the help of the fly jib PJ150 E. The crane’s radio remote control allows the operator to maneuver the load easily, while the P-Fold assistance system makes disassembling and folding the crane a breeze.

Vahur, the crane operator, finds the PK 135.002 TEC 7 to be an excellent tool for the job. “Every operation so far has completely convinced me of this crane, no matter how complicated the circumstances were at first glance,” he says. With the crane’s help, Vahur and his team successfully unload two of the four life rafts from the Megastar ferry and transport them to the workshop in a short time.

Liebherr’s LR 1400 SX crawler crane has been deployed on a construction site in Atlanta, Georgia by Full Tilt Crane Services. The crane is being used to lift concrete tilt-up panels which are being produced on-site by Martin Concrete Construction, Inc., Full Tilt Crane’s parent company. The LR 1400 SX was selected to meet the growing demand for lifting larger and heavier parts. With a lifting capacity of up to 400 tonnes, the LR 1400 SX was developed by Liebherr to meet the market’s need for a versatile crane that can handle ever-increasing loads.

The tilt-up panels being lifted on the construction site in Atlanta are manufactured on-site, making Full Tilt Crane Services and Martin Concrete Construction a one-stop-shop for tilt-up projects. The largest panel being lifted has a height of around 34 meters, making it impossible to produce using precast methods. The advantage of producing the panels on-site is that it makes them more flexible than precast elements, giving customers greater flexibility in their designs.

During the development of the LR 1400 SX, Liebherr focused on ensuring that it could be easily transported and set up on different job sites. With a compact transport weight of 46 tonnes, it can be easily moved between locations, making it an excellent choice for companies like Full Tilt Crane Services that frequently move from one job site to another. The self-assembly system of the crane is also an essential feature for Full Tilt Crane Services, as it allows them to fully assemble the LR 1400 SX in under 12 hours without the need for an auxiliary crane.

Family Business Acquires Nine New Liebherr Cranes

Wiesbauer GmbH & Co.KG has expanded its crawler crane fleet by acquiring a Liebherr LR 1700-1.0. In December, the new 700-tonne crane successfully completed its first operation in Marbach am Neckar, demonstrating its capabilities. 

“As we already have a 650-tonne and a 1,000-tonne crawler crane in our fleet, the LR 1700-1.0 is the ideal addition to the mid-range of our crawler crane portfolio,” explains Marco Wilhelm, authorised signatory and head of technology at Wiesbauer. The LR 1700-1.0 was produced for the assembly of wind turbines as well as for use in infrastructure and industrial projects.

Wiesbauer deployed the new LR 1700-1.0 crane with its state-of-the-art derrick system during its initial operation. The V-frame ballasting system, which is a hydraulic foldable frame, was used to adjust the ballast radius of the crane from 13 to 21 meters. This system eliminates the need for a fixed ballast guide for large radii, providing infinite adjustability. During the construction of an electrical power plant in Marbach am Neckar, the LR 1700-1.0 lifted a 230-tonne transformer off a ship.

In late December, Wiesbauer placed an order for additional cranes from Liebherr, consisting of two LTM 1070-4.2s, two LTM 1090-4.2s, two LTF 1060-4.1s, one LTM 1300-6.3, and one LTM 1650-8.1. This investment is intended to revitalize Wiesbauer’s fleet and, in certain instances, increase its capacity. “Through these new purchases and when making our purchasing decision, we placed great emphasis on the fact that all the counterweight plates on the smaller cranes and the booms on the larger cranes can be easily and quickly dismantled in order to achieve lighter driving conditions for the cranes, as the topic of vehicle weight, axle load and driving permits is becoming increasingly controversial throughout Germany,” explains the Wiesbauer team. 
After the unexpected and sorrowful passing of Thomas Wiesbauer in April of the previous year, the Wiesbauer family business is now jointly led by its third and fourth generations. Sissy and Florian Wiesbauer, fourth-generation family members, have taken charge of the operational management and collaborate closely with Sabine and Jochen Wiesbauer. Wiesbauer GmbH & Co.KG, situated in southern Germany, is a significant provider of crane and heavy haulage logistics services with approximately 90 cranes and a workforce of 180.

SCHUCH ORDERS FIVE MORE LIEBHERR CRANES

Schuch continues to heavily invest, receiving six 800-tonne mobile cranes from Liebherr last year, including two LTM 1090-4.2, two LTM 1150-5.3, one LTM 1230-5.1, and one LTM 1750-9.1. Currently, more 800-tonne cranes are on order. This year, the Schuch Group will receive an additional five cranes from Liebherr including the LTM 1090-4.2, LTM 1120-4.1, LTM 1250-5.1, LTM 1650-8.1, and LTM 1750-9.1.

Tim Schuch, one of the group’s managing directors, explains: “The new cranes with lifting capacities of up to 250 tonnes will replace the older vehicles in our fleet. The larger cranes will expand our capabilities.” Schuch is currently focusing on the renewable energy sector. “We will primarily use our new large cranes for the assembly of wind turbines, worldwide. Especially in this class, we are adapting to the constantly growing requirements of our global clientele through these new investments.” 
Schuch highlights the 800-tonne upgrade of the LTM 1750-9.1, which has already been delivered, and the 700-tonne LTM 1650-8.1 which has been ordered: “Our key decision-making criteria were the high lifting capacities, even with a longer boom, and the high flexibility during erection and dismantling of the two Liebherr large cranes.” Additional orders for 90-800 tonne Liebherr mobile cranes are already planned, with deliveries continuing into 2024.

EUROGATE CTW OPTS FOR TWO AUTOMATED DUAL TROLLEY STS CRANES

Eurogate Container Terminals Wilhelmshaven has ordered two dual trolley ship to shore container cranes from Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. The cranes are automated, cabinless, with a 73m primary outreach, a lift height of 54.5m, a span of 30.48m, and a 26m operational back reach with a secondary trolley. They are equipped with Liebherr Remote Operator Stations and designed for tandem operation. The primary trolley delivers containers to a pinning platform, where they rest on frames while twist locks are removed. Once pinning personnel leave the platform, they activate the secondary trolley, which automatically delivers the container to landside AGVs.
Eurogate has relied on Liebherr for its container handling needs in previous projects, such as supplying over 20 STS cranes to Eurogate Terminals in Germany and eight STS cranes to Tanger Alliance in Morocco, where Eurogate is a shareholder. These cranes will be the first double trolley container cranes at CTW and will handle the largest container vessels in the world. Wilhelmshaven, being Germany’s only deep-water port allowing ultra-large container vessel access at all tides, is a key component of Germany’s transport infrastructure, and growth in throughput is expected with Eurogate’s expansion and modernization of the terminal into an automated terminal for the future.

These solid and reliable cranes are also equipped with radio remote control, which allows for easy maneuvering of heavy loads through extended range of operation. 

Road 2015 LLC does not solely rely on cranes for their operations. They also utilize additional Palfinger equipment to enhance the flexibility of the crane. One such example is the Palfinger crane manipulator on the PK 17.001 SLD 3 crane tip. FIVE LIEBHERR TOWER CRANES FOR OTTO WULFF

Construction company Otto Wulff is extending its fleet with five new Liebherr EC-B tower cranes. The third-generation family company from northern Germany has placed orders for a 220 EC-B 12, two 220 EC-B 10s and two 340 EC-B 12s. All ordered cranes, featuring custom paintwork, will be delivered throughout autumn 2022. In total, Otto Wulff now owns 32 Liebherr tower cranes from the K, EC-B and EC-H series. “The new 220 EC-B 10/12 and 340 EC-B 12 cranes fit in perfectly with our existing Liebherr tower cranes,” says Michael Jahn, Head of Crane Logistics at Otto Wulff. “Their modular design and outstanding load capacities mean we can put them to optimal use.” 

The cranes first job will be in Leipzig on the construction of school buildings. The 220 EC-B 10 and 340 EC-B 12 are involved in building a secondary school, which is set to become part of the new Löwitz quarter. Together with partners, Otto Wulff is currently in the process of developing an urban quarter to the west of Leipzig’s main railway station that will include around 500 residential units as well as offices, cafés, restaurants, a hotel and a day-care centre. The new secondary school will be at the heart of the quarter. A second new school building is also taking shape at Prager Spitze in Leipzig. A 220 EC-B 10, a 220 EC-12 and 340 EC-B 12 are involved in this project.

AL FARIS ORDERS 27 CRANES FROM LIEBHERR

The Al Faris Group of Companies, based in Dubai, received 24 mobile cranes from Liebherr last year. The new cranes, which have a lifting capacity ranging from 110 to 700 tonnes and an additional 27 cranes already on order, are helping the Middle Eastern crane and heavy transport company to continue expanding. 

The 24 cranes delivered to Al Faris include four LTM 1500-8.1s, which are the last production units of its most successful large crane. With a total of 15 machines, Al Faris now operates the world’s largest fleet of Liebherr 500-tonne cranes. “The LTM 1500-8.1 is my absolute favourite crane from Ehingen,” says Hillary Pinto, the company’s managing partner. 

The package of cranes also includes its upgraded model, the LTM 1650-8.1, which boasts increased power with a maximum lifting capacity of 700 tonnes and features the latest technology such as VarioBallast and VarioBase variable supporting base. Additionally, Al Faris has received its first LTM 1300-6.3, a 300-tonne crane on six axles and one of Liebherr’s latest mobile cranes with a 90-meter telescopic boom. 

At the Bauma trade fair in Munich in October, Al Faris placed an order for an additional 27 cranes from Liebherr, some of which will be delivered this year and some in the next. The new order includes six more LTM 1300-6.3s. Keonne Pinto, also an Al Faris shareholder, explains: “The concept of the LTM 1300-6.3 with its 90-metre telescopic boom combined with compact dimensions is perfect for universal operations here in the Middle East, especially in the energy sector. This type of crane is eagerly awaited in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.”

LIEBHERR CONTAINER CRANES: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF STS LIFT HEIGHT EXTENSION IN AUSTRALIA

Liebherr Container Cranes successfully completed the first ship to shore lift height increase using their new patented jacking system, Liebherr Transform. The operation was overseen by Liebherr engineers at Patrick Terminals in Brisbane Autostrad. 

The Patrick Terminals – Brisbane Autostrad, located on the eastern coast of Australia, is a highly advanced container terminal. Liebherr has two ship-to-shore container cranes at the terminal, including a new STS that is currently being commissioned and another that was supplied in 2015. The 2015 crane had a lift height of 37.5m, but with the increasing size of vessels visiting the port, an extension of the lift height was needed. 

In 2022, a new patented jacking system for lift height extensions was used for the first time at the Brisbane terminal. Developed and manufactured by Liebherr Container Cranes in Ireland, the system’s key feature is that it utilizes the crane’s end carriage as a stable base for jacking the crane structure, eliminating the need for additional equipment. Additionally, as the system uses the crane structure as the foundation for jacking, the loadings are low and are carried through the existing crane. 

The preparation process for the lift height extension takes a couple of weeks, and the flexible system allows the crane to be jacked in place or moved away from the rails as needed. The actual crane raise and insertion of the extensions can be done in a few hours, making it suitable for terminals with high winds. The operation is very quick and the entire process can be finished in as little as four weeks per crane. Once the project is completed, the jacks are packaged in containers and shipped to their next destination. 

-Significant project at GCT New York LP in the Port of New York and New Jersey
GCT New York LP operates four Liebherr ship-to-shore container cranes that were supplied in 2004. These cranes have a lift height of 36.57m and an outreach of 50m. In partnership with Liebherr USA, GCT is planning to undertake a significant Liebherr Transform project to increase the lift height of the cranes by 8.6m, and the outreach of the cranes by 5m (two bays). After the completion of the project, the cranes will have the capability to handle the largest vessels that call the port of NY/NJ, which will allow GCT to better serve its customers. 

Speaking about the project, Mr. Torsten Paas, Divisional Manager Liebherr USA commented: “We have worked closely with our customers in GCT New York to develop a tailor made solution that will meet their growth needs over the coming years. In line with the well-known life expectancy of Liebherr cranes, GCT can expect many more years of quality service from their existing machines. The project serves as a clear example of the real-world benefits of Liebherr Transform. GCT will benefit from extended operational ability of their cranes at a fraction of the cost of replacing their cranes.”

EGYPT’S FIRST POTAIN MCR 295 CRANES ERECTED FOR MASPERO TRIANGLE PROJECT

IDP, Egyptian Potain dealer, has erected and commissioned the country’s first two Potain MCR 295 luffing jib tower cranes to help contactor Orascom Construction develop the Maspero Triangle district in downtown Cairo. “The Potain brand’s reputation for quality and innovative technology gave us the trust and confidence to expand our fleet with the new MCR 295 cranes. We are proud to have the first units in Egypt working on this prestigious project,” said Hossam Mounir, equipment deputy director at Orascom Construction. 

With a 60 m jib length and load capacity of up to 16 t, the two Potain MCR 295 luffing jib cranes were ideal for the job. The compact and versatile design with near-vertical luffing capability enables multiple cranes to be positioned on site and avoids oversailing existing buildings. IDP and Potain erected the cranes with an initial 37 m height under hook and they will reach a final height under hook of 150 m. The cranes will remain on site for approximately three years. 

The project, estimated at LE10 billion (US$400 million), is part of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s development plan and aims to transform the area into a thriving hub for living, working, and relaxing. The western side of the project has been allocated for administrative and commercial purposes, while the center will be an entertainment area. There will also be hotels and tourist attractions facing the River Nile.
