Hellmich Kranservice boosts fleet with Tadano HK 4.050-1.

Michael Findeiß, the managing director of Riedstadt, Germany-based crane hire firm Hellmich Kranservice, recently took delivery of an HK 4.050-1 – the final of four cranes that the company had ordered from Tadano. The three machines he’d already received included two AC 5.220-1 and a first HK 4.050-1 – a crane concept he’s a fan of. “Truck-mounted cranes like this are fantastic from a road permit standpoint,” he said on taking delivery of the second HK 4.050-1 in Lauf. “That makes them a highly versatile option on a day-to-day basis. And that’s by no means the only great feature of the HK 4.050-1. For instance, we were also especially taken with its asymmetric H-style outriggers.”

The outriggers, combined with the crane’s manoeuvrability, mean the crane is particularly well-suited for use on tight construction sites, says Tadano.

For Findeiß, another advantage of the HK 4.050-1 is its cost-effectiveness: it uses a truck chassis, which is beneficial in terms of wear and operating cost. In addition, the standard commercial truck chassis is backed by the comprehensive Mercedes service network and benefits from ready access to affordable spare parts. Further efficiencies come from the crane’s two-engine configuration which, Tadano says, allows Hellmich to cut down on diesel consumption when operating the superstructure.

Hellmich ordered the HK 4.050-1 with a rope-pull system for the boom, for increased speed and efficieny to set up and operate on site. Other items of equipment ordered by Hellmich include the optional mounting for a folding swing-away jib as well as an aircraft warning light.

“Thanks to all these features, the HK 4.050-1 is the perfect complement to our fleet,” says Findeiß. “It means we now have even greater flexibility in responding to the needs of our customers.”

René Hellmich, a shareholder of the Hellmich group of companies, says he’s been a fan of truck-mounted cranes since the 1980s. “We’ve been using HK cranes for more than 15 years, and we’ve been known to have as many as ten of them in our fleet,” he says.

UK crane company expands feet with Liebherr LTM 1050-3.1.

In November, Wigan, UK-headquartered crane company Marsden Crane Services took delivery of a new Liebherr LTM 1050-3.1 mobile crane.

The three-axle compact taxi crane has a four-section 38-metre main boom, topped by a nine to 16 metre double swingaway extension fly jib, which takes the crane’s lifting height to 54 metres, while also offering up to 44 metres lifting radius. The crane has been supplied with Liebherr’s Remote Control for all superstructure functions. The LTM 1050-3.1 can carry all of its 9 tonnes of counterweight in the UK. 

Managing director, Lee Marsden commented: “As part of our planned expansion, we are pleased to be receiving yet another new Liebherr all terrain crane into our fleet. The LTM 1050-3.1 is a quality machine and we now look forward to further crane and machinery additions over the next 18 months.”

Marsden Crane Services was founded in 2015 by brothers Brendan, Dale and Lee Marsden.

Increased control, safety, speed and efficiency are some of the benefits available, Wolffkran claims, for new and retrofitted cranes.

Cham, Zug-headquartered crane manufacturer Wolffkran has now made its High-Speed-Positioning-System (HiSPS), which was first seen at Bauma 2022, available for order, together with Wolffkran's latest addition: the WOLFF 6523 Clear tower crane.

According to Wolffkran, the HiSPS enables loads on the crane hook to be moved virtually sway-free and positioned with millimetre precision.

Wolffkran says that from the start of 2024 newly manufactured Wolff trolley jib models will be equipped with the option of HiSPS and existing Wolff cranes can also be retro-fitted. 

The connectible HiSPS assistance system operates using two battery-powered sensors on the trolley and hook block of the crane hook. Connected to a control unit in the switch cabinet, it detects the rope’s movements and automatically adjusts the motion and speed of the slewing gear and trolley to it. “Ultimately, the crane operator controls more than the crane – they control the load with assistance from the system,” explains Viktor Mosolf, Head of the Digitalization Department at Wolffkran.

By activating the HiSPS, the load that was already swinging as a result of the crane movement is stopped within seconds. This can also be used to eliminate heavy wind effects. Since the trolley always assumes its position automatically via the hook block when HiSPS is activated, it prevents the load from being pulled diagonally. The trolley automatically moves as well or is always positioned precisely over the load when the hook is manually pulled or when the load is manually pushed by hand on the ground.

“HiSPS significantly reduces the risk of accidents and damage due to swinging loads or hooks,” summarises Viktor Mosolf. “Furthermore, the anti-collision system is optimised since not only the crane but also the load in the working range limitation is automatically stopped.” 

According to Wolffkran the HiSPS not only enhances safety at the construction site it also allows users to work more efficiently as the crane can be operated more easily and intuitively from the ground than before via remote control. Previously, the crane operator had to move the load slowly to prevent a strong pendulum motion, says Wolffkran. With the system connected, however, users can move the crane significantly faster. Moreover, the HiSPS allows hook positions to be saved and automatically moved to them. As a result, the load can be positioned precisely even with a limited view. Besides construction site cranes, the ability to automatically travel to saved positions also makes HiSPS attractive for ground-controlled Wolff cranes without crane cabins at storage areas, in mines, and in industry, Wolffkran adds. 

“However, HiSPS is more than just a digital assistance system and the building block for the autonomous driving crane,” says Dr. Mohamed Abouelezz, Head of Product Management and Business Development at Wolffkran. “The crane movement and position data that the HiSPS generates can be integrated into the modern digital construction site organization using building information modelling (BIM). With HiSPS, our cranes are ready for the progressive digitalisation of the building industry.” 

Wolffkran says it is also looking to make the high-speed positioning available for its luffing jib cranes, too.

Transportability, increased crane control and pick & carry characteristics make the new LTR 1150 particularly suitable for construction and wind work, claims Liebherr.

Liebherr has expanded its range of telescopic crawler cranes with a new 150-tonne machine. The LTR 1150 is positioned between the LTR 1100 and the LTR 1220. Although the new crane offers around 50 per cent more lifting capacity than the LTR 1100, Liebherr says it can be transported just as easily and economically as its 100-tonne sibling – complete with crawler carriers on low loaders with a total weight of 60 tonnes and a transport width of 3.5 metres, or optionally without crawler carriers at a total weight of just 38 tonnes and a width of only 3.0 metres.

The LTR 1150 is the first telescopic crawler crane to be equipped with the Liebherr’s VarioBase system, which enables the crane control to determine the optimum load capacity depending on the track width and angle of rotation.  

With the launch of the LTR 1150, Liebherr says it is responding to the requirements of crane operators faced with lifting jobs that are beyond the LTR 1100, but for which the LTR 1220 is overkill.

To transport the crane without the crawler carriers, which gives a total transport weight of 38 tonnes, a jack-up erection support consisting of four swivelling cylinders is required. This support the crane on the ground while the tracks are removed and the low-loader positions itself under the crane. This method is tried and tested with Liebherr’s 100-tonne LTR 1100.

The LTR 1150 also has a new automatic support system to assist the operator. Liebherr says this was developed to allow faster and easier (dis)assembly of the crawler carriers.

The two crawler carriers, each weighing 11 tonnes, can be transported together on a standard semi-trailer with an economical width of 2.55 metres. The integrated access steps are folded in during transport.

In terms of ballast distribution, with only four lifts, the entire counterweight can be ballasted on the crane: two lifts for the two 11-tonne central ballasts and two for the maximum slewing platform ballast of 41 tonnes. As with the Liebherr LTM cranes, this is attached to the slewing platform using a hydraulic ballasting device. Liebherr-AutoBallast is designed to support the crane driver during this process. The support for the slewing platform ballast is integrated in the central ballast.

The LTR 1150 is the first telescopic crawler crane to be equipped with Liebherr’s VarioBase variable supporting base system which determines the optimum load capacity in real time depending on the fixed track width and the variable rotation angle. The company says that not only does it provide greater safety for telescopic mobile cranes, but also allows significantly higher load capacities, especially for lifts directly over the supports.

With the VarioBase system Liebherr says the greatest advantages in terms of load capacity are achieved when performing lifts over the corners of the tracks, especially with reduced track widths. The maximum track width of 5.8 metres, a reduced width of 5.0 metres, and a narrow 3.5-metre track width are available.

As with the other Liebherr LTR cranes, the LTR 1150 is also equipped with load charts for slopes up to a maximum of 4° – in gradations of 0.3°, 0.7°, 1.5°, 2.5° and 4°. For the first time for its telescopic crawler cranes, Liebherr has also calculated "WindSpeed Load Charts" for the new LTR 1150, which make it possible to work safely and flexibly even at higher permissible wind speeds of up to 15.6 m/s – even with the full load capacity in many boom positions.

Liebherr believes the crane will particularly appeal to users working in the wind farm erection and construction industries thanks to its performance and pick & carry characteristics. It is capable of assembling crawler cranes up to the 1,000-tonne class and can move components weighing over 60 tonnes.

Liebherr says the crane’s short, powerful erection jib and additional hoist gear mean the LTR 1150 can move loads of up to 34.6 tonnes into position. The range of working equipment for the 52-metre telescopic boom also includes a hydraulically adjustable double folding jib and telescopic boom extensions that allow hoisting heights of up to 83 metres to be achieved.

Heavy-duty Palfinger crane delivers glass panels in delicate operation.

French lifting and transport company Gil & Fils Levage used the latest addition to its fleet, a Palfinger PK 165.002 TEC 7 mounted on a Scania 8x4 double drive, to deliver preassembled glass panels to a cinema in Rumilly, east of Lyon, France.

The crane assembled glass panels using a total outreach of 32 metres. The glass was carefully manoeuvred through a corridor with a false ceiling below where it needed to be installed.

"All the sensors in the TEC series offer safety and ease of use,” said crane operator Loïc Sonnerat, who runs the business with his father Gilles. “The radio control gave me all the onboard information I need in terms of total reach, distance extended, angles of the first and second booms, and weight. Stabilising the machine is also easier and the HPSC-Plus Load System adjusts the capacity to the truck load."

The crane has up to nine hydraulic extensions. A fly jib, and two additional manual extensions can be added providing a total reach of up to 42 metres. It has a maximum lifting capacity of 32 tonnes.

To complement the crane, the Scania was modified for weight optimisation and equipped with front stabilisers for 360-degree operations.

"With this new heavy-duty crane we want to strengthen our offering to our customers who have an increasing need for outreach and performance,” added Sonnerat. “As job sites become more difficult to access and the weight of materials increases, the truck often needs to be positioned further away. This should also allow us to develop new applications. It allows us to work easily in situations where our other equipment would have reached its limits."

LTC use seven Saez tower cranes equipped with AMCS zoning and anticollision systems.

UK crane provider London Tower Crane Hire & Sales (LTC) is using seven Saez tower cranes equipped with DCS 61-S zoning and anticollision systems from French company AMCS Technologies. The cranes are working at the Plumstead High Street rehabilitation housing project in south London, UK.

According to Gary Leader, health and safety advisor at LTC, “The DCS 61-S system significantly benefits the jobsite with ability to set key reference points as well as a calibration check point. For instance, if required to lift to a particular loading bay on a regular basis, we can ask the system to record the coordinates, and the system will notify once the crane has been manoeuvred into position.

“Things inevitably go wrong on a jobsite, and the true value of the system is observed when we encounter issues. If for example power is lost on TC3, the system recognises this, and will not allow me within the lifting radius of TC3. However, once power has been restored, the system will automatically recognise this and make TC3 live on the screen. 

“The DCS 61-S system is also live, so it enables troubleshooting issues to be rectified far more quickly. Rather than a technician attending the project to diagnose the fault, the system can be observed remotely in AMCS HQ. AMCS Technologies’ teams are then able to diagnose the fault remotely, arrange parts and instruct a technician to attend to rectify the issue saving the jobsite precious time”.

According to AMCS its DCS 61-S system ensures three fundamental functions: zoning, anti-collision, and it also works as a display unit and data logger.

For zoning, three-dimensional prohibited zones are defined directly on the screen, by associating geometric shapes with the areas or static obstacle concerned.

For anti-collision the system operates in real time and in 3D to calculate the distances between each part of the crane as well as movement speeds. It enables action to be taken on equipped mechanisms to ensure complete immobilisation of the crane at a pre-set distance from a particular obstacle. 

The display unit and data logger continuously records and saves events related to "prohibited area" and "interference" function management, allowing direct viewing and/or downloading to a flash drive. An additional function enables the dynamic recording of certain information concerning system and/or crane status.

Manitowoc’s tower crane brand Potain has launched a brand-new self-erecting crane: the Evy 30-23 4 t. This new model marks the debut of the Evy range, the latest generation of Potain self-erecting cranes.

The Evy 30-23 4 t is specifically engineered for home construction and residential building construction of up to three stories in height. According to Potain, the crane offers a simple setup procedure and requires less manual operation than similar cranes. It boasts an impressive 4 t maximum capacity and 1 t capacity from the tip of its substantial 30 m jib, enabling precise handling of heavy loads within an extensive radius. 

Variable jib positions of 10, 20, or 30 degrees deliver an impressive 35 m maximum height under hook with a 30-degree raised jib. The jib can also be hydraulically folded so that it is just 15 m long and can be shortened to 24 m if required. It also includes a three-phase power system and permanent four-fall reeving.

PT Vector Utama adds Grove GRT8100 rough-terrain crane to fleet.

PT Vector Utama, one of Indonesia’s leading engineering and heavy construction services and solutions providers, has purchased a Grove GRT8100 rough-terrain crane. The crane will be used for structural steel erection work and site maintenance at the Batu Hijau mine in West Sumbawa, Indonesia. The GRT8100 will be used in conjunction with the company’s Grove GMK5250L-1 all-terrain crane.

The GRT8100 was sold to PT Vector Utama Indonesia by Cranserco, Manitowoc’s Indonesian dealer. According to Manitowoc, PT Vector Utama chose the Grove GRT8100 because it wanted a robust, 100 t capacity rough-terrain crane with good manoeuvrability and in-country parts, service, training, and technical support from a reputable partner.

Matt Peeler, president director at PT Vector Utama Indonesia, said: “This is the second time we have commissioned a Grove crane, and we are very impressed with the GRT8100’s ease of operation and features. We’ve already been using our GMK5250L-1 to do heavy lifts on the jobsite, and the GRT8100 is an excellent choice for smaller lifts and mobilising counterweights for the GMK5250L-1. The GRT8100 was the perfect fit for us in terms of capacity and all-round capabilities, and we know we can rely on it to deliver.”

The GRT8100 has up to 73 m of reach when the 47 m main boom is fitted with its full jib and intermediate lattice section. Manitowoc says the GRT8100 provides excellent operator control and efficiency, too, with an ECO mode for operations to save fuel, and Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) maximising operator productivity on the jobsite.

Sany marks dedicated UK crane division with launch of 60-tonne, three-axle SAC6000E all terrain.

Chinese construction equipment manufacturer Sany has established a direct sales channel in the UK through its new Sany Cranes UK division, located in in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, operating from the premises of existing Sany business, Putzmeister UK.

The Sany Cranes UK division is headed up by Andrew Snow, who joined in April, and has been appointed Country Manager UK & Republic of Ireland. As UK manager for crane products Snow is overseeing all aspects of operations, sales, and customer support.

Snow has over 20 years industry experience having joined from Tadano UK and, prior to that, he worked at Terex and Demag.

The first crane available directly through Sany Cranes UK is the 60 tonne capacity SAC600E all terrain which is currently being showcased at a series of launch events around the country. The crane is a proven model already working on a number of sites across Europe.

The SAC600E is powered by a MTU OM470LA Stage V engine coupled with Allison transmission driven by Kessler axle. It is fitted with a 50m main boom, with the option of 16m double folding jib, and it can travel with 13 tonnes of counterweight ¬– within UK STGO regulations.

"Sany is committed to delivering high-quality cranes to our clients in the UK," said Snow. “In addition, we can now support our customers directly with spare parts and service.

“We have already seen success and product acceptance in other European countries and now Sany aims to establish itself as a leading provider of cranes in the UK as well.

The next ‘launch event’ for Sany Cranes UK’s SAC600E is at Anlore Plant & Haulage in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 31st October to 2nd November. It is an open event and booking is not required.

Sarens has bought 24 units of Sany’s 250 tonne capacity all terrain crane (sold in Europe as the SAC2500E). The cranes were delivered via Sany’s official dealer in Bahrain, Giant Heavy Equipment. The all terrain cranes will be used for oil and gas projects across the Middle East.

The crane has a maximum boom length of 75 metres, a maximum lifting height of 111 metres and all wheel steering.

Ashland, Virginia, USA-based heavy lifting solutions provider Atlantic Coast Cranes held an Open House to showcase the new Terex rough terrain Crane — the TRT40US — to industry professionals.

According to manufacturer Terex, the TRT 40US meets market demands for a flexible, durable off-road crane that caters for several applications, including ports, construction, infrastructure, mining, energy, yard logistics and general lifting.

With a maximum capacity of 40 US t and a 99 ft hydraulic four section boom, the TRT 40US also has the TEOS Terex Operating System on a 10-inch touch screen display that has a user-friendly interface to increase customer’s operating efficiency.

Global Wind Projects, a UK provider of crane and installation services for wind turbines, has joined forces with its sister company Global Crane Services to strengthen their joint crane fleet with a Liebherr LG 1750. The 750-tonne lattice boom mobile crane, which Liebherr says combines the performance of a crawler crane with the mobility of an all-terrain mobile crane, joins an LG 1750 and LR 1750 crawler crane, as well as over 60 mobile cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 25 to 750 tonnes in the Global fleet, and will help the company to meet growing demand from the wind industry in the UK and Ireland.

While Global Wind Projects will use the new LG 1750 primarily for onshore wind power projects, Global Crane Services will use it for heavy-duty tasks in ports, on infrastructure projects and in the petrochemical industry in the UK and Ireland. Both companies are subsidiaries of Global Port Services, part of the Inverness and Aberdeen-based Global Energy Group, a services group for the energy sector.

Ryan Burke, General Manager at Global Wind Projects, explains the expansion of the crane fleet: "With the purchase of the new Liebherr LG 1750, we are doubling our capacity for the specific requirements of wind projects. This procurement is therefore a very significant investment for our company. The new crane was put to work for the first time in Ireland, where it installed five onshore wind turbines at ABO Wind Ireland's Sheskin wind farm in County Mayo. It then went to County Offaly to install 29 onshore turbines at the Yellow River wind farm. With two LG 1750s in our fleet, we can meet the increasing demand for our onshore wind crane and erection services and support the continued growth of Global Wind Projects."

The LG 1750 lattice boom mobile crane offers the flexibility and performance of a 750-tonne crawler crane as well as the mobility of a high-speed mobile crane. In other words, it combines the benefits of these two crane types in a single concept. The LG 1750 uses the crane super-structure and boom system from the LR 1750 crawler crane, together with an eight-axle chassis of the latest design with speed-dependent rear-axle steering. This makes the lattice boom mobile crane ideal for fast erection work for wind power projects, industrial construction or infrastructure work.

Global Wind Projects was established in April 2021 by Global Port Services to meet the increased demand for onshore and offshore wind power in the UK and Ireland. Since then, the company has experienced rapid growth winning some of the largest contractors in the renewable energy sector.

German crane company Colonia used a Liebherr LTM 1150-5.3 all terrain crane to hoist tower cranes on to the roof of the 45 storey Axa high rise building.

Once a showcase project and, at the planning stage, even Europe’s tallest residential building – the Axa high-rise on the banks of the river Rhine in Cologne was completed in 1973 and still provides accommodation for around 1,000 people on 43 of its 45 floors. As the building’s exposed aggregate concrete balconies have been dilapidated for some time, they are now being removed and replaced. An LTM 1750-9.1 and, as an auxiliary crane, an LTM 1150-5.3 were brought in to prepare the work site.

Today, the 147-metre high-rise is a listed building. This has made the renovation of its balconies a challenge, as noticeable changes to the building’s appearance are not permitted. To install the new, more weather-resistant balconies made of glass and aluminium, two tower cranes were mounted on the building’s roof at the end of June. An LTM 1750-9.1 played a key role in this project – with its 52-metre telescopic boom as well as a 15-metre mast extension and a 91-metre luffing jib, the mobile construction crane was tasked with lifting various parts of the two Liebherr tower cranes high into the air.

“We used the entire ballast of 204 tonnes as well as all available equipment for the mobile crane for this operation,” reports Christian Kühne, project manager at the crane company Colonia. The large crane was supported by an LTM 1150-5.3, which was used as an auxiliary and assembly crane on the ground.

The LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane is well-suited for these lifts onto the 147-metre-high roof, claims Liebherr. The nine-axle crane has a maximum pulley head height of 154 metres and can carry the complete telescopic boom on public roads. Thanks to the Y-guying system, considerable load increases can be achieved by combining the crane’s high lifting capacities with the variable jib system, Liebherr claims. As an all-terrain crane, the LTM 1750-9.1 was designed with particularly short set-up times and maximum mobility in mind

The cranes were used in tandem for one week on the banks of the Rhine in Cologne. The 750-tonne crane was set up in under two days. “With a maximum hook height of 152 metres, a building height of 147 metres and a load capacity of 13.4 tonnes, the constellation for this operation was already impressive,” says Kühne. “Especially for special jobs like this, we can rely on Liebherr’s excellent quality and service.” The crane rental company Colonia has been a customer of Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH for decades and currently has 26 Liebherr cranes in its fleet. Four new additions – an LTM 1650-8.1, an LTM 1150-5.3, an LTM 1130-5.1 and an LTM 1110-5.1 – will join Colonia’s fleet in the near future.

New crane will first be used for high profile bridge work in Sydney, Australia.

Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift & Shift (TBHLS), Sany’s national distributor for crane products in Australia, took delivery of a third Sany SCC8000A, with the other two operating out of depots in Queensland and Western Australia.

The 800t capacity lattice boom crawler is now deployed to the Sydney Gateway Project. The $2.6 billion project is designed to cut 40 minutes of traveling time for motorists coming from Sydney’s west and ease transport congestion around Sydney Airport. It will feature five steel bridge beams lifted by the new Sany. One of the first lifts the crane will perform weighs in at 197 tonnes with a 56-metre radius

“I was working on a project in Townsville just a couple of months ago with a 400-tonne Sany, which is a 2014 model,” said Kyle, TBHLS’s Supervisor. “The difference between the quality and the technology in that model and the 800 is massive. Sany’s technology on par with the products you get in a German or American crane.”

The crane has a Cummins QSX15 engine and a maximum lifting moment of 12016 tonne-metres. It also has a completely automated load moment indicator, boom angle limit, and closed-circuit monitoring system.

At the beginning of the month, Tutt Bryant imported its first battery electric crawler crane from Sany which is to be working on any one of the many infrastructure projects currently underway along the East Coast of Australia.

Emil Egger AG erects six wind turbines in the Swiss Jura Mountains; LR 11000 and LR 1700-1.0 crawlers lift loads of over 70 tonnes to a height of 100 metres.

In an eight-week operation St. Gallen, Switzerland-based company Emil Egger erected the country's second largest wind farm on the Jura mountain range near the border with France.

For the work it used two Liebherr crawler cranes, an LR 11000 and an LR 1700-1.0, which were working at an altitude of around 1,200 metres. The wind turbines were almost 140 metres high. The company installed six turbines, manufactured by Enercon, which are expected to produce 22 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually.

The operator of the LR 11000, Peter Stricker, commented, “The heaviest load cases on this construction site occurred during the lifts of the generators. Together with the hook block and slings, I had a gross weight of 71 tonnes hanging from my LR 11000."

The crane was equipped with a 114-metre-long main boom in order to be able to handle the greatest assembling heights of around 100 metres. With a gross weight of 65 tonnes, the rotors were somewhat lighter, but visually more spectacular than the generator or nacelle. The 40-metre-long rotor blades were mounted to the hub on the ground to form complete blade stars, lifted and installed. With a special device, these huge components could be swivelled into a vertical position during the lifting process.

In parallel with the 1,000-tonne crawler crane, the LR 1700-1.0 completed the erection of other wind turbines a few kilometres away. On the 99-metre main boom, a 12-metre jib angled at ten degrees provided sufficient lifting height.

"All the crawler cranes in our fleet are from Liebherr," said Emil Egger’s managing director Michael Egger. In addition to an LR 1250 from the Liebherr factory in Nenzing, Austria, the company also operates some of the most powerful cranes in Switzerland. "We rely completely on the Liebherr brand for crawler crane technology because these modern machines are extremely practical and user-friendly,” Egger continued. “The machines are simply 'state of the art'. And Liebherr's service leaves little to be desired - and not just for reasons of physical proximity to the manufacturer. If we have a major problem with our equipment, a mechanic is on site within two hours. And that's worth a lot."

Mammoet’s PTC210-DS ring crane ready to start wind work for GustoMSC.

Mammoet has completed the assembly of its PTC210-DS ring crane, one of the largest in its fleet, in Rotterdam for a heavy-lift project for GustoMSC. The colossal 210,000tm crane, which has a maximum lift capacity of 3,200t, will be used to perform crane replacements on two offshore wind installation jack-up vessels (Wind Orca and Wind Osprey) for the shipping/construction company Cadeler.

Cadeler emphasises the strategic importance of these crane replacement projects to solidify their position as a key supplier in the offshore wind sector.

Erected in Mammoet’s own yard in Schiedam, Netherlands, the Mammoet PTC210-DS is one of five 5,000t class ring cranes in its fleet, and the only one currently operating in Europe.

One of the largest cranes in the world, the height and size of the PTC210-DS belie its greatest strengths – its versatility and ability to operate in areas where space is limited.

Dirk Knoester, Senior Adviser at Mammoet, said: “The PTC210-DS is the perfect crane for this job. It has a relatively small footprint combined with 360-degree slewing, and the possibility to switch between fixed and luffing jib mode (as only the PTCs can) resulting in the largest possible working area.

These PTC cranes can also be assembled in numerous configurations and thus a tailor-made configuration is feasible for any job: different main boom and jib lengths, fixed or luffing jib, different amounts of counterweight, and two ring diameters.”

The PTC210-DS will be used to remove the existing leg cranes from both jack-up vessels and replace them with new GustoMSC high-capacity ones.

GustoMSC has been contracted by Cadeler to design, fabricate, deliver, and install the cranes.

The new leg cranes are fully electric driven and have a 1,600t lifting capacity, making them ready to install and service next-generation wind turbines with capacity ratings exceeding 14MW.

Remco Zandstra, Senior Commercial Manager at Mammoet, said: “The decision to have the PTC210-DS constructed in our own yard in Schiedam was driven by safety and optimising the schedule for our client. Our yard has a unique location in the port of Rotterdam, and this gave us the possibility to position the crane between the two vessels and serve them at the same time. Not only does this save considerable time, by minimizing movements of cranes in the yard and vessels along the quay, it also creates the safest possible solution to perform this project.”

The replacement work on Wind Orca and Wind Osprey is scheduled to commence in Q3/2023 and is expected to be completed by Q1/2024.

With GustoMSC and Mammoet neighbours, this project marks a unique collaboration in Schiedam and a great opportunity for their engineers to witness it live from their offices.

Range-topping Potain cranes debut on prestigious Saudi Arabia resort project.

Abu Dhabi-headquartered crane supplier NFT Group, which has one of the world’s most extensive tower crane fleets and is the sole distributor for Potain cranes in the Middle East, has purchased two Potain tower cranes and immediately shipped both to a high-profile tourist destination under construction in Saudi Arabia, as part of the vast NEOM development. One of the cranes is an MCT 1105, the largest topless tower crane from Potain, and the other is one of the previous largest models, an MCT 1005.

“We had a lot of success with the MD 1100 [the forerunner to the MCT 1105] which has such strong lifting capacities across the entire working radius,” said Nawar Al Zahlawi, business development manager at NFT Group. “When we first had discussions with Manitowoc about potential evolutions for the model, we were glad to support the projects. I’m pleased to say the MCT 1105 and MCT 1005 have surpassed our expectations. The load charts are even better than expected and the topless design means they can work seamlessly alongside other cranes. They also have monobloc mast sections which make them quicker to erect.”

The cranes are scheduled to work onsite for nine months on Sindalah, a luxury Red Sea Island resort, and part of Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project. Using large capacity tower cranes was the only option for the jobsite, owing to limited space and the fact there are no accessible routes for mobile or crawler cranes on the 840,000 m2 island. The timeframe is tight for construction too, so a precast design is being used to speed up the build time. This means the cranes are placing concrete modules of up to 20-30 t.

Both have been configured with 50 m jibs for the project, although they can accommodate up to 80 m. The MCT 1005 is working with a 43.1 m height under hook, while the MCT 1105 has a 63.1 m height under hook. Maximum possible freestanding height for both is 69.7 m. Both cranes can also lift a maximum of 50 t, however, the MCT 1005 will lift 8 t at its 80 m jib radius, while the MCT 1105 can lift an impressive 11 t at the same radius. When working with a 50 m jib, as on the Sindalah project, the MCT 1005 will lift 21.5 t at the jib end, and the MCT 1105 will lift 22.8 t.

“Not only are the MCT 1105 and MCT 1005 very powerful cranes that meet most lifting demands, they were also a joy for our erectors to install. Witnessing their enthusiasm for the job and Potain’s new design developments brings us great satisfaction,” Al Zahlawi concluded.

Two Raimondi flat-top tower cranes deployed for prestigious Milan development.

Italian crane sales, rental and service company Spelgatti has supplied two Raimondi MRT189 flat-top tower cranes for the construction of a high-profile residential development, called Bosconavigli, in Milan, Italy.

The cranes were sold to the project’s contractor SMV Costruzioni – which now has a total of eight Raimondi cranes in its fleet, while Spelgatti owns more than 60 Raimondi cranes.

The two MRT189s are freestanding at heights of 64m and 58m, with jib lengths of 65m and 54m respectively. In their final configuration the flat-tops have a maximum lifting capacity of 10 tonnes, and a tip load to maximum radius of 2.20 tonnes.

“Due to the tight project schedule, along with the nature of the jobsite, we opted for high-performing machines that are also easy to install,” said Massimo Guizzetti, CEO of Spelgatti.

The cranes are equipped with a 45kW hoisting winch, with a drum capacity of 660m, and lift at a maximum speed up to 136 metres per minute.

The flat-tops are both fitted with the Raimondi Deluxe R16 crane cab. Upon completion, the new 11-storey development will feature 90 residential units, modern amenities and large outdoor areas with an ecosystem of over 170 trees, more than 8,000 shrubs, and over 60 different plant species.

Kuiphuis expands fleet with new electric cranes to meet demand.

Oldenzaal, Netherlands-based crane rental company Kuiphuis is investing in two new SK2400-R eLift cranes from Dutch manufacturer Spierings, the first of which will be delivered to Kuiphuis in the first half of 2024.

The SK2400-R eLift is a mobile tower crane based on a crawler crane chassis. Spierings says the SK2400-R eLift is the strongest mobile tower crane ever built. This powerful crane is built on a crawler undercarriage, so it can be quickly erected and moved around the construction site.
The crane has a jib length of 42 metres or 50 metres, lifting up to 5.5 tonnes or 2.5 tonnes at the tip. In addition, the crane hoists a maximum of 18 tonnes at 14.6 metres radius. 

Kuiphuis already has five Spierings eLift cranes in its fleet as well as over 40 other Spierings cranes. 

According to the Kuiphuis’ director and owner, Bob Bruijsten: "We may be moving faster than construction companies at the moment, we find that construction companies are still getting used to the fact that with electric cranes of this size we can already run on construction with a 16 amp connection.

“If we already look at how many hours we run emission-free every week, that just makes me proud. In addition, both new machines are much needed, we have requests from all over the country for the eLift system, specifically for the SK2400-R capabilities.

Mathieu Braamhaar, sales engineer at Spierings Mobile Cranes, said, "Kuiphuis is a wonderful family business which invests in the future; the fact that they are now the first to operate with our new SK2400-R eLift is a great milestone. The SK2400-R eLift is a further development of the SK2400-R which we have been producing for some time. However, the new crane has multiple configurations for lifting. With one transport you already have a lifting capacity of 2800 kg at 42 metres. This has made the crane multifunctional."

Grove all terrains help Spanish hospital expansion.

Grúas del Vallés, a crane rental company in Barcelona, Spain, is in the second phase of construction work for an extension and upgrade at the Hospital del Mar, the local general hospital. The company is using two Grove GMK5150L all-terrain cranes on the project to handle lifting work.

The facility is undergoing remodeling and expansion, which is expected to last six months. As part of the project, several old buildings have been demolished while new ones are constructed – all with the help of the two Grove cranes.

The cranes have been supporting construction work that runs 24 hours a day over three shifts. The 150 t capacity GMK5150L all-terrain cranes are rigged with 44.5 t of counterweight and are handling loads ranging from 3 to 21 t. Their tasks include handling lifts for a new nine-story precast concrete building.

Marc Gelabert, manager at Grúas del Vallés, said the cranes were perfectly matched to the demands of the project: “The biggest challenge is accessing all the lifting areas as the jobsite is congested, but the two Grove cranes have performed excellently. They are perfectly suited to the job with their compact dimensions and strong load charts, both at short radii and when the boom is extended. In the final stages of the project, working space is greatly reduced and the cranes have to move frequently, sometimes by just a few centimetres. But our team is very pleased with the versatility and performance of the GMK5150L cranes.”

Mixed use jobsite in West London utilises four Raimondi tower cranes supplied by Bennetts.

UK tower crane specialist Bennetts Cranes has installed four Raimondi tower cranes at a waterside regeneration project in London, UK.

Bennetts, which is the UK dealer for tower crane manufacturer Raimondi, supplied three MRT159s and one MRT152 flat-tops for The Green Quarter site in West London. The project is designed to provide residential homes, commercial and retail spaces, plus community facilities.

Erected between 2022 and 2023, the four flat-tops present similar configurations in terms of tower height and jib length. Two of the three MRT159-8t tower cranes are at work with a jib length of 44m and tower heights of 47.2m and 67.8m. While the remaining MRT159 and the MRT152 are both installed with a radius of 38m and heights of 64.9m and 47.3m.

“We were thrilled to continue our relationship with an industry leading contractor by providing these four Raimondi flat-tops,” said Edward Seager, managing director, Bennetts Cranes. “It was also great to see that the contractor for this project has a ten-year-old crane policy, which means that all the machines deployed on-site cannot be any more than ten-years old by the end of construction.

“The use of flat-top saddle jib cranes in this particular case, where each crane oversails or is oversailed by at least two other machines, has helped to minimise the height difference needed between them. This has boosted the cranes’ productivity in terms of load lifting time compared to an A-frame crane solution.”

The shorter tower height also reduces the base loadings, meaning less steel and concrete is needed for the base, says Raimondi.

“Another key feature of Raimondi cranes’ site suitability is the 2.5m boom length sections,” Seager added. “Other cranes typically feature sections of 5m. Smaller sections, such as those developed by Raimondi, allow for more accurate jib configurations - 2 x 44m and 2 x 38m – helping to optimise the use of space and maximise load handling time for greater productivity and efficiency.”

The cranes will be onsite for approximately another 12 months. The flat-top cranes will also contribute to transforming a former gasworks and overflow airport car park into a nature-rich area for the local community.

Key Constructors drives piling for hurricane evacuation route in Mississippi.

Engineer-based construction company Key, LLC (Key) of Madison, Mississippi, USA, is currently building seven bridges and an interchange as a major subcontractor of Yates Construction on a 9.8 mile stretch of Highway 57 near Vancleave, Mississippi.      

Key is using three Link-Belt Cranes, two 248 HSLs and one 238 HSL, to drive over 300 prestressed concrete pilings for the project.

“We’ll drive 32 piling for each of the intermediate bridges, then 24 for the bridge abutments—all with Link-Belt cranes,” said site superintendent, Jeff Jackson. “We like Link–Belt’s – we’ve had good service from them. We’ve owned various Link-Belt models, most of our bigger cranes like the 238 HSL and 248 HSL handle pile driving and steel erection.”

Jackson began with Key Constructors as a pile driving foreman 26 years ago and is currently overseeing a portion of the Highway 57 project.

The project will eventually serve as a secondary evacuation route as well as a bypass around Vancleave. Mississippi 63, 12 miles to the east is the only other north-south route for quickly moving the local population off the coast for hurricane evacuation. The new four-lane highway will go north from Interstate 10 in Jackson County and travel north to Gautier-Vancleave Road in Jackson County, Mississippi.

Wolff 6523 Clear, aimed at DACH markets, extends manufacturer’s flat top tower crane line-up.

Wolffkran is adding a new model to its Wolff Pack portfolio of tower cranes: the WOLFF 6523 Clear. The new 224 tonne class flat top tower crane is based on Wolffkran’s 6031 Clear, one of the company’s best-selling cranes, but comes with a newly designed and patented jib and, if specified, the new WOLFF High-Speed-Positioning-System (HiSPS) ­– which premiered at Bauma 2022 .

For optimised assembly and operation the redesigned jib now has bottom chord connections that use bolts and the jib sections, including the rope swivel traverse, are mounted on the front with a mandrel and wedge connection. In the top chord the pins are now inserted into the pear-shaped holes to enable easier assembly without a hammer, says Wolffkran.

Sensors on the trolley and hook block, together with a control unit, enable the load to be transported free of load sway by detecting the rope’s movements and automatically adjusting the movement and speed of the crane to it.

Since the trolley adjusts its position automatically via the hook block not only is the wind impact eliminated but it also prevents a diagonal pull on the load making pushing the load by hand and pulling the hook manually easier and safer, Wolffkran claims.  

“This new development also provides advantages during crane operation,” said Dr. Mohamed Abouelezz, head of product management and business development at Wolffkran. “Thanks to the smooth jib transitions, trolleys equipped with lateral guide rollers run more steadily and smoothly along the jib. This makes it easier to finely position the load, even without using the High-Speed-Positioning-System.”

The new WOLFF 6523 Clear is equipped with a 45 kw hoist winch. It lifts a maximum of 8.5 tonnes in two-fall operation with a jib length of 30 metres and 12.5 tonnes in four-fall operation with a reach of 21.5 metres. At a maximum jib length of 65 metres, the WOLFF 6523 Clear has a tip load capacity of 2.3 tonnes in normal operation and 2.5 tonnes with the activated WOLFF Boost function. The jib can be extended from 30 to 65 metres in 2.5-metre increments.

The crane comes with a combined UV 20/TV 20 tower connection which allows it to be mounted freestanding on a 2.0 x 2.0 metre tower of up to 69 metres. Using a 2.9 x 2.9 metre tower it can operate at 106 metres without tie-ins. The crane can be transported on four trucks or in five containers. Featuring a tried-and-tested design, the cabin and switch cabinet are located on the driver’s cab station, which is connected to the rotating frame, making assembly easy.

The WOLFF 6523 Clear will primarily be sold in Germany (D), Austria (A), and Switzerland (CH) – although a version with a maximum payload of 10.5 tonnes in two-fall operation as well as an US version are being planned. The WOLFF 6523 Clear can also be specified with plastic fibre rope to replace the steel rope 1:1.

Launch of a new four-axle 120|TTLB extends Link-Belt’s truck terrain crane portfolio.

The Link-Belt 120|TTLB truck terrain crane has been launched. The crane has a 197 ft. (60 m) seven-section pin and latch boom. Maximum manoeuvrability is provided by all-wheel steering and a tight turning radius. A steerable rear axle with super single tires gives the 120|TT LB four steering modes – independent front, independent rear, combination, and crab.

The 120|TTLB comes with an air-ride suspension design, and air disc brakes on a rear-steer truck crane for best possible braking performance. For added engine performance and fuel economy the 120|TTLB is powered by a Cummins 445 hp (339 kW) EPA emissions compliant X12 Series engine. Top speed on the 120|TTLB is 55 mph (88 km/h).  

This product launch brings Link-Belt’s family of hydraulic truck terrain models to five: 75-ton HTT-8675 Series II, 100-ton HTT-86100, 110-ton HTT-86110, 120-ton 120|TT, and now the new 120-ton 120|TTLB.

Third Manitowoc MLC300 lattice boom crawler with VPC-MAX boosts crane company’s capacity for the large tasks.

Kansas City, USA-based company, Wilkerson Crane Rental (Wilkerson), commemorates its 10th anniversary by enhancing its capabilities through the acquisition of a new Manitowoc MLC300 lattice-boom crawler crane equipped with VPC-MAX technology.

Despite its long-standing expertise in hoisting, lift planning, heavy hauling, and equipment servicing spanning over four decades, Wilkerson Crane Rental officially commenced operations in 2013. The establishment of the company emerged as Diana Holt orchestrated a rescue effort for the crane division, previously on the verge of dissolution. The division had been a significant part of her husband Jeff Holt's career as an operator and assembly director, and her father-in-law Fred Holt who was the general manager.

Under Diana's leadership as CEO and with Jeff overseeing operations as the Director of Operations, Wilkerson Crane Rental has expanded. The company's fleet of cranes now extends to regions including Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming. The impetus for this growth, says Manitowoc, has been a surge in local economic activity, including the construction of a new airport, data centres, and a battery plant, alongside the escalating demand for wind farms and infrastructure projects.

Jeff Holt, director of operations at Wilkerson, shared insights into their crane acquisitions: "Four years ago, we procured our inaugural MLC300 featuring an extended wide boom and upper boom point, primarily designated for wind farm projects. With the exception of a brief interlude for a three-month assignment, this crane has been pivotal in the maintenance of numerous wind turbines over time.

"Two years later we introduced a second MLC300 with similar specifications which initially embarked on wind-related ventures but soon diversified its role to encompass tilt-wall construction and infrastructure undertakings—where its versatility shone. Presently, it is stationed on a long-term project involving the replacement of a bridge over Table Rock Lake in Ridgedale, Missouri.

"Five months back, we invested in our third MLC300, this time integrating the VPC-MAX and Wide Boom Plus attachments. These additions are interchangeable across all three MLC300 units and have been instrumental in maintaining wind towers reaching heights of up to 100 meters. In the past five months, these attachments facilitated complete rotor drops for 100-meter wind turbines. The latest crane assignment involves contributing to the construction of a sizable tire plant in Topeka, Kansas, utilising its main boom and fixed jib."

The recent inclusion of a 386 ton capacity crawler, sourced from Kirby Smith, bolstered Wilkerson's collection, which already featured two other MLC300 models. The fleet extends to encompass a range of Manitowoc crawlers, including the MLC90-A, 999, 16000, and MLC650 equipped with VPC-MAX. Notably, the MLC650 with VPC-MAX has successfully completed operations on two bridge projects and is now exclusively dedicated to wind farm initiatives. Expanding beyond cranes, Wilkerson's equipment inventory also embraces offerings from Manitowoc and Grove, incorporating the Grove GMK6350, RT765E-2, as well as four National Crane boom trucks—with plans for an additional two to join soon.

Second large CC3800-1 lattice boom crawler for UK company.

UK heavy lift and move specialist Osprey has ordered a second new CC3800-1 lattice boom crawler from Tadano for its heavy lift fleet. The purchase, it says, is in line with its green credentials as the CC3800-1 is Tier 4F and Euro 5 compliant and meets all current emission standards. The purchase has been made via Tadano UK.

To date in 2023, Osprey has invested in a variety of cranes including a Tadano CC2400 and CC3800-1 and a Liebherr LTR1100 and an LTM1200. It has also invested in a new Enerpac JS250 hydraulic gantry system.

Simon Massey, chief commercial officer, Osprey: “Our existing CC3800-1 has more than proven its worth. Because they come with a variety of load options, these machines offer superb flexibility for complex challenges and challenging sites. They have exceptional capacities for such a com-pact crane. Mammoet-Giant chosen for marshalling activities in Ørsted's Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms.

Ørsted Taiwan, part of the world’s largest offshore wind company Ørsted, has commissioned Mammoet-Giant Taiwan, a joint venture (JV) between heavy lifting and transport specialist Mammoet and heavy lift company Taiwanese Giant Heavy Machinery Services, to provide essential support for the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

The offshore wind farm development is playing a crucial role in Taiwan's green energy targets, as it aims to achieve 5.7 GW of offshore wind power capacity by 2025.

The contract win builds upon Mammoet-Giant’s consistent success in Taiwan where it has been active since the inception of offshore wind in the country in 2017. The JV has been entrusted with the marshalling and lifting activities for 66 suction bucket jackets.

Mammoet-Giant will deliver a comprehensive turnkey service for the project, from initial planning to execution, ensuring the jackets get into the water faster. By managing the complete quayside scope with meticulous planning and execution, the company says it will reduce interfaces, minimise project risks, and ensure high levels of utilisation with minimal disruption to port facilities.

To handle the quayside operations, Mammoet has selected its 5,000t capacity SK 350 ring crane which it says will be 3instrumental in achieving the project's objectives.

Operating from a single location, the SK350 will lift the 2,500t suction bucket jackets directly from deck carriers to the quayside and after temporary storage on site, onto deck carriers ferrying the jackets to the installation vessel in the field. This methodology will eliminate the need for vessel repositioning during offloading and loading operations.

The crane’s design enables it to operate in the region’s high wind speeds, mitigating schedule risks and optimizing loading speeds. This reduces vessel turnaround times at the port to a minimum, resulting in multiple cost reductions and further schedule optimisation.

Irish Cranes installs four Raimondi flat-tops for Walls Construction on major seafront development in Dublin.

One of Ireland’s largest construction companies, Walls Construction, is using four Raimondi 12 tonne capacity MRT234 flat-top tower cranes on a mixed-use seafront development, called Claremont, in Dublin, Ireland. Once complete the development will comprise more than 500 residential units, indoor and outdoor amenities, plus over 2,600 sq. m. of retail and commercial space.

The cranes were supplied by Raimondi’s Irish agent, Irish Cranes & Lifting.

Installed between March and April 2023, the MRT234s are onsite with jib lengths ranging between 44m and 60m, and heights ranging from a minimum of 37.5m to a maximum of 52.8m. All of the cranes, erected at a final configuration, are equipped with a hoist gear of 55kW, and are able to lift at a maximum speed of 120 m/min. 

Before installation, due to their location next to a section of the Irish Rail network, a detailed study of the positioning and operational procedures of each machine was required. As per Irish Rail requirements, prior to installation, each crane had to be fully insured, obtain specific permits, as well as a license agreement. In addition, once erected, each machine underwent a third-party independent inspection.

“From an operational perspective, during the installation procedures we had a series of guidelines to observe, including the supporting mobile crane allowed to slew only by 180 degrees,” elaborates Robert Coffey, director general, Irish Cranes. “We had to install the cranes in parallel to the train tracks to avoid any component, including the counter ballast, oversailing the railway line. Worth noting is that a zoning of three metres away from the critical infrastructure has been permanently set for the entire site.  

“In terms of technical challenges, to align with the existing regulations, all machines have been derated to 75% of their maximum lifting capacity, and one of the jibs has been shortened to avoid interference with a communications mast on the rail line.”

The four flat-tops will remain onsite until the project is completed.

Al Faris uses its Liebherr mobile crane fleet to carry out tandem and quadruple lifts of boats.

Dubai, UAE-based heavy lift and transport specialist Al Faris used two 500 tonne Liebherr mobile cranes to complete what it describe as a ‘challenging’ lift of a 125-tonne boat. The boat was lifted from the water and safely stowed on the jetty (images one and two).

In a separate job it used four of its 500 tonne mobile cranes to lift another vessel, this time weighing 243 tonnes (images three and four).

Canadian crane company The Erectors buy 300 tonne capacity, 90 metre long telescopic boom mobile crane.

Crane rental company The Erectors Hoisting and Rigging Inc. has added a new six-axle Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3 to its fleet. The crane has the longest boom in its class that can be carried at a 12 tonne axle load.

The Erectors will use it for erecting and dismantling tower cranes and as a taxi crane in crane rental.

“The LTM 1300-6.3 complements our fleet perfectly,” said Justin Tabani from The Erectors. “The 300-tonne crane is a crane of the future and makes our fleet even more innovative. We chose this Liebherr mobile crane because it is simply the best in its class.”

With lattice extensions, it allows a maximum hook height of 120 metres and a maximum boom radius of 94 metres.

Integrated features include: ECOmode, ECOdrive, VarioBase Plus, VarioBallast, Auto-Ballast, single-engine concept, and wind speed load charts.

Florida-based Sims Crane & Equipment Co. purchases debut 80-ton truck crane.

Tampa, Florida-headquartered crane leasing and sales specialist Sims Crane & Equipment, which has operated for over six decades, has bought the first Tadano GT-800XL-2 truck crane in the USA.

The 80 ton crane has a five-section 154.3′ power boom, a 33.1 ft / 58.1 ft bi-fold jib, and a self-removable counterweight. It debuted at ConExpo alongside the 120-ton GT-1200XL-2.

Tadano says that with their low axle weights, narrow transport widths and long boom designs its new Tadano truck cranes can easily get special permitting for transport - making them suitable for taxi crane service.

The new crane will sit alongside Sims’ large fleet of Tadano all-terrain cranes and will be available across Florida and Georgia.

Sims Crane & Equipment Co. Vice President Jackson Sims said, “We have been hoping for many years now to see Tadano enter back into the US truck crane market and have been loaded with anticipation from the day they announced the GT-800XL-2 and the GT-1200XL-2. New Liebherr and Grove mobile cranes boost UK firm’s fleet.

UK crane rental firm Baldwins Crane Hire is currently underway with a strategic investment in new cranes. The business has seen the new arrival of mobile cranes from manufacturers Liebherr and Grove, with models GMK5120L and GMK5250XL arriving from the Manitowoc Company.

In addition, Baldwins has recently acquired a new Liebherr LTM1450-8.1 which compliments its other LTM1450 and wider heavy crane fleet which includes models LTM1350 / LTM1500’s, with two super heavy lifters in the Liebherr LTM1800 and the Terex Demag AC1000.

Aside from the new cranes from Grove, the company has added a number of Liebherr LTM1120-4.1 to its Fleet. The four-axle cranes have class leading capacity and boom length (66m), and along with VarioBase and VarioBallast; Baldwins says it’s an ideal crane for lifting projects with limited space, with simultaneous requirements for high lifting capacity and considerable outreach.

POTAIN CRANES ON UK’S LONGEST RAIL BRIDGE

11 Potain luffing jib tower cranes will help build the UK’s longest railway bridge as part of HS2 project.

The 3.4km Colne Valley Viaduct is being built by UK construction and civil engineering company Sir Robert McAlpine as part of the new HS2 rail line infrastructure project. Once complete the viaduct will be the longest rail bridge in the UK.

To help build the bridge Sir Robert McAlpine is using 11 Potain MR 225 A luffing jib cranes. Each of the cranes will be configured with a 50 m jib, enabling them to lift up to 3.25 t at their jib end, while up to 10 t can be handled out to 25 m. All cranes will work with the same configuration, erected on reusable fixing angles, with a 17.5 m height to the jib foot.

The first MR 225 A was erected in June 2022 and the last one will be dismantled in March 2024. The cranes will work ten hours a day for five days a week, lifting concrete formwork and precast sections.

GEDA LIFT USED ON NEW GEDA HQ

A GEDA 2 PK hoist is being used to assist the operator of the crane building GEDA’s new headquarters in Asbach-Bäumenheim, Germany, to reach his cabin.

The German manufacturer of construction hoists and industrial hoists is building 6,000 m2 of office space to provide room for 220 company employees to work, plus a publicly accessible restaurant. Helping the crane operator reach his cabin safely is a GEDA 2 PK hoist. Following the topping-out ceremony in April marking the completion of the skeleton, work will continue, with the building scheduled to be completed and opened in the spring of 2024.

According to GEDA, more and more countries will introduce rules and regulations aimed at providing operators with assistance in climbing cranes higher than 30 metres. At present this rule is already in effect in the Netherlands, France, and parts of Scandinavia. GEDA believes its 2 PK offers the ideal solution. The system has been proven for around 25 years. It is compatibility with any brand of crane, making it particularly attractive to leasing companies.

Depending on the customer’s needs, the GEDA 2 PK can climb a variety of heights up to 150 metres. On the GEDA building site, the crane operator is transported to a height of approximately 30 metres before walking the few metres to his cabin.

The lift has patented components including quick release connectors for the ladder sections and ian ntegrated cable channel.

The lift has a speed of 24 m/minutes, saving the operator from exhaustive climbing. According to GEDA, the 2 PK not only makes the climb to the cab five times faster, it also safeguards their health. To climb a crane 60 metres high, for instance, an operator without a lift would take roughly 12.5 minutes, exerting extreme stress on their body. As such GEDA believes its lift increases efficiency on the site as well as helping to alleviate the shortage of skilled workers. It says that providing drivers with an easier way to climb tower cranes allows them to remain on the job longer, and older workers can continue doing the job. 

Employers who make equipment like this available are significantly more attractive to applicants and win out over their competitors, it claims. The crane operator lift also makes it easy for workers to carry tools or materials for service and maintenance, vastly reducing the risk of injury or falling.

GEDA says the system also enhances safety as once the crane operator reaches the top the car, measuring 1.1 m x 0.6 m, opens and a small ramp with guardrails folds down. Together with the access barrier on the crane, the operator can step across to the cabin risk free, it claims. A speed-regulated fall brake and electrical safety features are designed to guarantee safety and prevent errors in operation. In emergencies, the crane operator lift can also become a life saver, GEDA adds. Since the 2 PK is big enough to transport two people, weighing up to a total of 200 kg, it allows help to be sent to the driver quickly, should they need it, and both people can come down together.

Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane installs silo designed to reduce clinker at German cement plant.

German multinational building materials company Heidelberg Materials is investing heavily in the reduction of CO2 emissions in cement production. As part of this it installed a silo at the Schelklingen cement plant for storing aggregates that can reduce the proportion of clinker in the cement.

Clinker is fired from limestone in a rotary kiln at 1,450 degrees Celsius. This process releases CO2 which damages the climate. “The less clinker we need for cement production, the less CO2 is released into the atmosphere,” explains Frank Hartwig, the project manager responsible for new builds and modifications at the plant. “Therefore, we want to replace the clinker in the cement with other suitable materials. We can store 1,500 tonnes of them in the new silo. The dosing station in the so-called penthouse above it feeds the aggregate straight into the cement production process.”

To instal the silo commissioned German  crane and heavy haulage services specialist Schmidbauer. 

Schmidbauer used its one-and-a-half-year-old Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 with three transport vehicles for the counterweight and two vehicles for the luffing jib.

The two crane operators Stephan Pirner and Robert Halsner used the Liebherr eight-axle crane for initial assembly work and the two main hoists, each of around 53 tonnes. They set up the crane with 145 tonnes of ballast and a 31.5 metre luffing jib for the work.

After installing the bottom part, the actual silo was put in position.

A day later, the penthouse, which weighed around the same, was mounted on top of the silo. The biggest challenge was to attach the load to the sloping penthouse roof. A special chain system, whose length can be adjusted pneumatically, was used to level the huge component.

“This is the best crane I have ever used,” said Stephan Pirner, who has worked for Schmidbauer for 27 years and has operated large cranes from various manufacturers for 23 years. “The setup process is particularly efficient. Liebherr has designed it in such a way that very little physical work is required from the crane operators.”

His colleague Robert Halsner, a crane operator for seven years, said: “The LTM 1650-8.1 is really user-friendly and very flexible to use with VarioBase and VarioBallast. And it is extremely powerful.”

Project Manager Hartwig is also pleased with the installation of the new silo system: “In recent years, our company has made a number of investments for the future here at the site. More projects are already planned, so it's good to be able to rely on competent partners.”

Stability, manoeuvrability, sensitivity and comfort are key attributes of Sennebogen 643 E on rail extension work.

Belgian construction company Galère is using a 40 tonne 643 E Sennebogen telescopic crawler crane, which it bought through its Belgian sales and service partner Van Haut, to help build the expansion of the Belgian RER urban rail network. The line between the Nivelles and Lillois stations is being extended from two to four tracks.

According to Sennebogen the crane is well suited to working on the rough terrain thanks to its manoeuvrability and stability. Its 30m long Full Power Boom can be continuously telescoped even with a load on the hook, enabling optimum load capacities at any boom length.

In total, the urban rail project is scheduled to take a good nine years and should be completed by the end of 2029. At Lillois, Galère is working in a joint venture with Jan de Nul to build a concrete tunnel under the new four-track line. This is needed so that the water accumulating in the embankment can be diverted under the tracks. In addition to lifting and placing the reinforcement mats and the formwork panels, the 40 t crane is laying steel pipes, which can weigh up to five tonnes. These are to temporarily drain off the water before the construction of the tunnel is completed and must therefore be carefully inserted under the concrete structure. According to crane operator David Philippot the intuitive and sensitive control of the telecrane help with this: "I really like working with the 643 E. The machine works extremely sensitively, and the new SENCON control system is really top! I find it very clear how the status of the machine is displayed and how the load moment limiter works."

Philippot also likes the Multicab operator cab, which can be tilted by 15 degrees as standard: "The cab is very spacious and comfortable. All the controls are within easy reach and you always have a good view of the load, no matter how high it hangs on the hook. At greater heights, I can simply tilt the cab back and sit back in a relaxed position so that I can concentrate fully on the crane lifts."

Azimut Construction purchases Azerbaijan’s first Potain MCT 275

Azerbaijan-based developer and contractor Azimut Construction has bought a 12 tonne capacity Potain MCT 275 tower crane – the first of this model in the country. It is using the crane to build its own residential development, Premium Residence, which is due for completion next year.

The MCT 275 was erected with an initial height under the hook of 40 m and will eventually reach 101 m. Azimut Construction purchased the crane from Azerbaijan's Potain dealer, AS Texnika, who also sold Azimut Construction its first Potain crane, the MC 235C, several years ago. The MCT 275 was selected for its topless design, enabling faster assembly and stronger lifting capability.

“We loved the efficiency and performance of our MC 235C, and we received excellent aftersales support from AS Texnika and Potain,” said Kenan Orujlu, owner of Azimut Construction. “For this latest project, Premium Residence, we wanted a crane that could match the class and scale of the development. It was an easy decision to add the MCT 275, because of our confidence and trust in AS Texnika, plus Potain’s global reputation for high quality.”

According to crane manufacturer Manitowoc, the Potain MCT 275 offers strong load charts and fast setup. There are two versions – one with a 10 t maximum capacity and the other with a 12 t maximum capacity. Up to 70 m of jib is available for both versions, allowing them to cover wider areas. The 10 t version will lift up to 2.3 t tip loads when working with the full jib, while the 12 t version has a 2.2 t tip capacity with the same jib.

Vernazza Autogru uses its Tadano CC 68.1250-1 to lift components onto a pipelaying ship in France.

Genova, Italy-based crane rental agency Vernazza Autogru used its Tadano CC 68.1250-1 lattice boom crawler crane to load heavy components onto a pipelaying ship at the port of Marseille, France.

In one of the biggest dry docks in all of Europe, Forme 10, lifted technical equipment onto the Saipem CastorOne, one of the world’s largest pipelaying ships with a length of 325 metres.

Specifically the crane had to replace heavy pipelaying equipment on the ship with more powerful and efficient components. This included lifting a DMA winch weighing 190 tonnes to a height of 30 metres at a radius of 30 metres, as well as six 200-tonne tensioners to a height of 40 metres at a radius of 50 metres. The heaviest load was a 500-tonne pipeline winch with a five-kilometre steel wire rope that had to be lifted to a height of five metres at a radius of 25 metres.

“Not a single one of the employees at the site had ever seen such an enormous crane in the flesh before – which maybe isn’t that surprising, given that our CC 68.1250 1 is the biggest crane currently in use in France and Italy,” said Vernazza Autogru general director Paolo Delfino.

The dock was a tight space in which to work. The crane’s track width, however, matched the rail spacing of the dock’s own harbour crane at the dock. This turned out to be a crucial advantage as it made it possible to position and move the CC 68.1250 1 on crane mats directly on the rails. “That was a very fortunate circumstance as it made manoeuvring the crane much easier,” Delfino added.

The CC 68.1250-1 was transported to the dock in France from La Spezia, Italy, by a 3,000-tonne barge over four days. Once it arrived at the port in Marseille a five-person Vernazza team set it up ready to go in less than a week.

The crane was configured with an 84-metre main boom and SSL with the complete superstructure and Superlift counterweights, enabling it to take care of all lifts safely and as scheduled with a ramshorn hook for both light and heavy loads.

The crane worked at the dock for four around months without any problems so, according to Vernazza Autogru, its client, the Chantier Naval de Marseille shipyard, was extremely happy.

Lift and move by Mammoet’s Liebherr LR 1750 crawler crane minimises disruption at plant.

At the POX methanol plant at the chemical site in Leuna, Germany, all reactor units, consisting of reactor, sub-reactor and waste heat exchanger, are being replaced. TotalEnergies Raffinerie Mitteldeutschland, operator of the plant and Europe's largest methanol producer, was looking for partners for this project and contacted Mammoet to replace the first and the second reactor.

A complete shutdown of the plant was not possible, as a required production volume had to be always guaranteed. Therefore, only one reactor at a time could be removed and replaced. What was required, therefore, was a flexible and safe solution that would disrupt operations as little as possible.
A preliminary engineering study carried out by Mammoet concluded that the most efficient solution to replace the reactor unit would be to use a Liebherr LR 1750 crawler crane. It can lift and move a load of 140t at the same time, as well as perform all other lifting operations. This was necessary because, due to space limitations, the pre-assembly and storage area for the components was located approx. 200m from the installation position.

In order to safely lift the steel construction module, completely fitted with equipment, whose centre of gravity could not be precisely calculated but was in any case off-centre, Mammoet used its specially developed COGAS winch with four-point rigging.

The winch acts as a centre-of-gravity balancing system. The operator controls the winch via a remote control and can change the length of the individual rope strands so that the crane hook exactly matches the component`s centre of gravity.

By offering everything from a single source, from engineering to crawler crane delivery with rigging to execution with its own personnel and special equipment, Mammoet says it reduced the number of interfaces and contributed to safe project execution while the plant was in operation.

The mobilisation and preparation of the crawler crane took place over the New Year. Despite the holidays, the team's high level of dedication meant that the crane was ready to lift on time.

First, the old reactor and the old sub-reactor were removed one by one, transported by the crawler crane to the laydown area about 200m away, and stored there. Special demolition chains were used for rigging. The heavy-duty rigging was then modified, and the new components were lifted into place with the LR 1750.

The new sub-reactor, weighing 120t, was already stored upright at the pre-assembly area. It was attached, lifted, moved around 200m to the plant on the hook of the crawler crane and pivoted into place. The new reactor, weighing 140t, followed in the same way.

Finally, the steel construction module, weighing 100t, was lifted and moved safely into position using the Mammoet COGAS winch.

All work was completed ahead of schedule.

Kran-Mitterhauser of Austria has expanded its mobile crane fleet with the addition of a Grove GMK5120L all-terrain crane.

Helmut Mitterhauser, general manager at Kran-Mitterhauser, said his company loved how the crane’s design brings together reach, capacity and ease of transport: “We previously purchased a Grove GMK6300L-1 and have always been happy with its consistent performance and reliable operation, and so have our customers. With the GMK5120L, we were really impressed with the long boom and the MAXbase variable outrigger positioning that gives us so much flexibility with set-up. The GMK5120L is a versatile addition that will help us support a broader range of customer projects.”

The 120 t capacity Grove GMK5120L has a 66 m main boom and taxi crane capabilities, carrying up to 14.6 t counterweight in a 12 t per axle configuration or 3.1 t of counterweight in a 10 t per axle configuration.

The crane is designed to easily adapt to 10 t, 12 t, or 16.5 t per axle allowances, enabling users to select the best set-up for the job.

With dimensions of just 14.2 m overall length and 2.75 m width manoeuvrability is enhanced by Grove’s MEGATRAK independent suspension. The GMK5120L also comes with the new generation of Grove carrier cab. It seats the operator an extra 235 mm towards the outside to offer enhanced visibility and manoeuvrability. With the introduction of EUROMOT 5, the GMK5120L and other Grove all-terrain cranes can be operated with HVO diesel that enables CO2 emission reductions of up to 90%.

Custom climbing system used for raising one of two luffers on high profile Auckland site.

China Construction New Zealand - part of the huge China State Construction Engineering Corporation – is using two Liebherr luffing jib tower cranes to help build the ‘Seascape’ skyscraper in Auckland, New Zealand.

A 280 HC-L 12/24, with a maximum lifting capacity of 24 tonnes and a radius of 40 metres, is in use on site alongside a 542 HC-L 18/36, working with a lifting capacity of up to 36 tonnes and a 50-metre radius, are being used to lift steel and glass components.

Liebherr has provided a special climbing concept and trained service engineers for the high profile project.

As the height of the skyscraper increases, Liebherr is correspondingly rising the 280 HC-L using a 355 IC internal climbing system. The tower sections, measuring just 1.9 x 1.9 metres, are narrow and often used in spaces such as lift shafts. Here, however, they are being used externally.

This setup, Liebherr says, allows the 280 HC-L and 542 HC-L to provide optimal service on site as fewer tower sections are needed. Also interior work in the lower section of the residential tower can be carried out unhindered. 

The 542 HC-L is being raised on the outside of the building using a more traditional 500 HC tower system. The luffing jib crane will be tied to the building a total of nine times until it reaches a maximum tower height of approximately 163 metres.

Once in position, the 542 HC-L will carry out the final lifts on site and also assist in dismantling the 280 HC-L. The 542 HC-L will then climb back down the building and be dismantled with the help of a mobile crane. Liebherr’s service engineers are responsible for maintaining and climbing both cranes and will also take on disassembly.

Company MD marks 50th work anniversary with new crane purchase.

German crane rental firm Kölch & Sohn has added a Tadano AC 3.055-1 all terrain crane to its fleet. The company’s managing director Kurt Kölch collected the crane in person, along with co-director Alexander Kölch, from the Tadano facility in Lauf, Germany. The purchase marked Kurt Kölch’s 50th anniversary at the company.

“With its 50-metre-long boom and the fact that it can travel with its full counterweight of six tonnes, the AC 3.055-1 is extremely fast and versatile, making it our crane of choice,” said Kurt Kölch. “We’ll be using it about the same amount for prefab home construction and machinery assembly projects inside factories – something that it’ll be able to take care of by itself and without the need for expensive or time-consuming additional transportation vehicles and travel permits.”

First job for Bracht’s new Tadano GTC-2000: 20 lifts a day for three months.

Erwitte, Germany-based crane rental firm Franz-Bracht Kran-Vermietung (Bracht) has used its new 200 tonne capacity Tadano GTC-2000 for its first assignment in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The crane was used to lift 15 tonne concrete components into place.

When the crane first arrived at the site it was set up, with Tadano first-assignment support, by a service technician in two hours with 60 tonnes of counterweight – enough to lift the precast concrete components with a boom length of 41.1 metres at a radius of 20 metres.

The crane carried out 20 lifts per day, including moving twice, for three months.

Chinese manufacturer XCMG is launching a new all-terrain crane, the XCA120_E, aimed at the European market. The crane will debut at the JDL Expo in Beaune, France, which takes place between 21–23 June.

The 120 tonne capacity, four-axle crane has a seven section 66 metre boom.

A maximum tip height of 94.2m can be achieved with its 32.5 metre jib, which can offset mechanically by 0, 20°and 40° or hydraulically up to 40°. This crane’s maximum radius is 60 metres.

Power is provided by a MTU Engine which delivers 360kW and uses a ZF 12 gear TraXon transmission. An independent suspension system from XCMG is designed to provide good stability on high-speed roads.

The crane has variable supports, for jobsites with limited room, and also offers a double-hook lifting and turning mode which helps operators move loads from horizontal to vertical.

Resilient and durable cribbing timbers help ‘eliminate chaos’.

Iowa, USA-based outrigger pad manufacturer DICA has developed composite lumber cribbing timbers to support static loads inside or on the job site. Made from post-industrial recycled materials, DICA says its cribbing timbers will not splinter, break, or warp, providing predictable performance time after time to keep structures and equipment secure.

Workers often use lumber found on or around job sites to support materials, supplies, and components. This wood is hard to find in similar sizes, and it gets easily damaged by the surroundings, which requires frequent replacement. DICA says its cribbing timbers are a better option for securing equipment and materials on job sites. They are environmentally friendly and last longer.

“When you’re in the field, you need tools that are reliable and don’t create unnecessary chaos,” says Kris Koberg, CEO of DICA. “Workers should not be scrounging around job sites to find scrap that may or may not even support what they need. DICA’s cribbing timbers can do the job and easily be stored for the next site.” 

DICA claims its cribbing timbers offer more resilience and durability than wood, even in extreme environments. These are available in standard sizes, 4x4, 4x6, and 6x6, and can be used in any combination to create customisable structures.

Qatari construction company expands rough terrain fleet with new Groves.

Galfar Al Misnad, a construction company in Qatar, is expanding its fleet with two new Grove GMK4100L-2 all-terrain cranes. The four-axle, 100 tonne capacity, cranes were ordered through local dealer Mannai Trading.

The first crane has already been delivered and will be deployed on the North Field Expansion Project in Qatar, which involves the construction of a gas pipeline. The second crane will be sent to the same project once it arrives in Qatar.

The GMK4100L-2 is compact with a width of 2.55 m and the ability to carry 6.8 t of counterweight in its taxi configuration. It has a 60 m main boom and a 16.0 m swingaway jib.

The crane comes with Grove’s Megatrak suspension to aid manoeuvrability as standard. The crane is designed for efficiency, with low fuel consumption and the ability to run entirely on HVO fuel.

London, UK-based software company 1GUAVA will launch its tower crane usage monitoring program in the UK on the Wolffkran stand at the forthcoming Vertikal Days trade show. 

The company will promote how the standalone web-based software boosts simple process-es to ensure vital data is captured on-site to give an overview of tower crane utilisation while capturing key events such as winding off, maintenance/breakdowns and idle time.

1GUAVA says the program can increase on-site productivity, promote proactive scheduling, and deliver intuitive reporting to support on-site operations.

Throughout Vertikal Days 1Guava will present live demonstrations and show the software's capabilities in real-time.

"I am very excited to take the opportunity to share our new online platform live in Peterbor-ough with our friends from Wolffkran," said Philip Quicoe, founder of 1Guava. Liebherr GB has revealed what equipment it will be showing at this year’s forthcoming Vertikal Days trade show in the UK.

Liebherr says it continues to invest heavily in research and development programmes that have resulted in new models like the LTM 1300-6.3, LTM 1110-5.2 and LTCe 1050 hybrid crane and introduced features such as Variobase, Varioballast and Crane Planner.

720 tonne capacity R2000-720 tower crane rolls off Zoomlion’s Changde factory production line.
Chinese construction machinery manufacturer Zoomlion has launched the new R2000-720 tower crane at its Tower Crane Intelligent Factory in Changde.

Claimed to be the world’s largest tower crane, the R2000-720 incorporates 305 invention patents and 158 novel scientific research achievements.

With a 720t capacity and a height of 400m, the crane can lift 500 automobiles up to 130 storeys.

It represents a milestone for Zoomlion in its global expansion strategy for advanced manufacturing.
The company’s Changde manufacturing facility can produce 13 models of large tower cranes at full capacity, covering nearly all the requirements of ongoing large hoisting projects.

The R2000-720 will be used in the building of the Ma’anshan Yangtze River Highway-Railway Bridge, a three-tower cable-stayed bridge.

Zoomlion spokesperson said: “R2000-720 has made innovations and breakthroughs in balancing weight, structure, intelligent control and other technologies, solving multiple global challenges for ultra-large tower cranes under extremely complex working conditions, such as strong wind, high humidity and heavy load, meaning it’s not just the world’s largest, but also strongest tower crane.”

The R2000-720 employs a heavy-duty split structure and a high-load-bearing lightweight construction. This helps reduce the tower crane’s upper structure by more than 20% in comparison to traditional solutions, says Zoomlion.

MLC650 crawler crane with VPC-MAX installs 16 bridge beams.

Tutt Bryant Heavy Lift and Shift (TBHLS), an Australian heavy lift contractor and crane provider, used its Manitowoc MLC650 crawler crane with VPC-MAX to install 16 bridge beams on the Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange in Western Australia.

The crane's strength allowed TBHLS to complete the work from only two positions, saving time and ground preparation work. With Manitowoc’s VPC-MAX the capacity of the 650 t crane increases to 700 t and has the strongest load charts in its class.

The assembly was completed three days ahead of schedule.

The project was worth A$93 million and was handled by a local joint venture formed by engineering companies BG&E, Georgiou Group, and Golder Associates. Prior to the upgrades, the intersection was the second most dangerous and congested in Western Australia with more than 200 crashes between 2015 and 2019.

Mammoet’s new SK6000 is a 6000t capacity ring crane designed to provide ultra-heavy lift capacity to serve growing energy markets.

The first parts of the new 6,000 tonne ring crane will soon be delivered to Mammoet’s engineering centre in The Netherlands. In the months ahead, fabrication and production will continue as it is being readied for its very first project, with delivery scheduled in 2024. Once running it will be the world’s highest capacity land-based crane, says Mammoet, and can be fully operated using electric power, allowing clients to execute projects in a sustainable way.

Mammoet claims the introduction of this 6,000t ring crane sets a new standard in worldwide heavy lifting capacity and allows customers to construct heavier and larger components than ever before.
The new ring crane, named SK6000, shares the same engineering DNA as its predecessor, the SK350. By employing similar design principles and lifting techniques Mammoet believes it will provide customers with continuity and peace of mind as much of the crane’s technology has been working successfully – and safely – on project sites around the globe for many years.

Like earlier models, the SK6000 is containerised, enabling swift mobilisation and on-site assembly, providing ultra-heavy lift capacity wherever it is needed. It has been designed with next generation offshore wind farms in mind and will serve all global energy markets where additional lifting capacity is needed - both onshore and at sea.

As offshore wind components grow in scale and in weight, more lift capacity is needed, says Mammoet. It believes its latest ring crane will enable customers to integrate higher and bigger turbines, and launch heavier foundations, be they fixed or floating.

The crane will also work in the conventional energy sector where Mammoet says it will reduce integration time by enabling even larger topside modules to be built or reduce refinery downtime by removing and installing larger components with minimum disruption.

Canadian company reinforces crawler crane fleet with new 700 tonne models with wind work in mind.

Canadian crane contractor Guay has ordered three LR 1700-1.0 crawler cranes from Liebherr. One of them has been ordered with a narrow track chassis. The company plans to use this crane in particular in wind farms.  The 700 tonne cranes will be the most powerful Liebherr crawlers models in the company's fleet. The economical transport concept of the LR 1700-1.0 was an important feature behind Guay’s decision to buy the new cranes.

"We are seeing a strong increase in demand for new wind farms in our market,” said executive vice president Guillaume Gagnon. “The government is investing large sums in green energy to meet the growing demand. We need to invest in larger crawler cranes as wind turbines get heavier and taller."

Guay mainly plans to use the 700 tonne models in wind farms, but they will also be used in industry and for construction work. "We will now be able to erect wind turbines up to 165 metres in height and the maximum hook height of 196 metres will enable us to work on tall buildings," Gagnon added. "We chose the LR 1700-1.0 to be able to provide our customers with a state-of-the-art crane for their future wind projects. After completing our research, the high lifting capacity and small footprint proved to be the perfect combination for us. Compared to larger crawler cranes, the transport costs for the LR 1700-1.0 are lower due to the perfect weight and size of its components."

According to Liebherr, the LR 1700-1.0 combines the benefits of economical transport from crawler cranes in the 600 tonne class with the performance of lattice boom cranes in the 750 tonne class. It has VarioTray and V-Frame.  

Gagnon continued: "The V-Frame increases the crane’s capacity and flexibility to do all the work we have planned. VarioTray saves us time when working on wind power projects because we only need a lot of counterweight to erect long boom configurations. We have been working with Liebherr for a long time. We like the fact that Liebherr continually creates innovations that drive the industry forward. The LR 1700-1.0 is the latest model in this crawler crane class and it will also meet the requirements of the future thanks to its state-of-the-art crane technology."

Guay is one of the largest privately owned crane companies in Canada and North America, with more than 20 outlets in the province of Quebec and will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year. Jean-Marc Baronet founded the company in 1964 and is still its owner and president at the age of 92. His goal has always been to continue to deliver new solutions to his customers by investing in new technologies and larger equipment. Today, the company employs around 625 people and operates over 500 cranes of various types.

Wind farm work is a key application focus for Liebherr’s new LR 1700-1.0W.

Liebherr has unveiled the 700 tonne capacity LR 1700-1.0W narrow track crawler crane, the successor to its 600 tonne LR 1600/2-W. With new travel gear combined with components from its next larger crane class Liebherr says the crane is well-suited to assembling the latest generation of onshore wind turbines.

Despite its increased capacity the LR 1700-1.0W narrow track crane is just 10 cm wider than its predecessor, measuring 5.9 metres. It has a new centre section with a star support for the slewing platform.

As well as the higher lifting capacity, the new crane can also lift to a greater height than its predecessor. With its derrick system the LR 1700-1.0W it reaches 15 metres higher; without it’s reaches six metres higher. This, says Liebherr, means it can work on the latest generation of tall wind turbines.

These increases are possible thanks to a more powerful basic crane, plus the 3.5-metre-wide H-lattice type sections in the lower area of the main boom which increase lateral stability, says Liebherr.
Comparing the longest wind-turbine boom with the derrick system on the predecessor model (156-metre main boom plus 12-metre lattice type fixed jib) with the new crane with the same boom length results in a 64 per cent increase in lifting capacity (from 73 to 120 tonnes).

The LR 1700-1.0W comes with Liebherr’s V-frame and VarioTray ballasting systems. Its fixed lattice jib is designed for both single and parallel operation. The hook block has been designed to be wide to help prevent twisting. To save weight, the whip line is integrated on the head section.

Liebherr says it has focussed on maximising the performance of the new LR 1700-1.0W's drivetrain by including components designed for crawler cranes in the next higher load class. The crane’s four-way drive for the travel gear comes as standard equipment, along with the two metre-wide crawler pads.

Second fully electric rough terrain, this time for Japanese domestic market, announced by Tadano.

Japanese crane manufacturer Tadano follows its unveiling of a prototype of the world’s first fully electric rough terrain (the GR-1000XLL EVOLT) with the announcement that it will also launch a smaller fully electric 25-tonne class GR-250N EVOLT rough terrain crane for its Japanese domestic market in 2023.

According to Tadano the crane will, like the GR-1000XLL EVOLT, have a 194-kW engine enabling a top speed of 30.5 mph (49 km/h).

Once at the jobsite a single battery charge provides up to 11 hours of crane work. This means the crane can travel 25 miles (40 km) to a jobsite and have enough energy for five hours of crane operation, illustrates Tadano.

Integrated regenerative braking further boosts travel and operating times.

Unlimited crane operation at the work site is possible in plug-in mode after the crane has been connected to an external power supply.

The GR-250N EVOLT will be able to be charged in two-and-a-half hours using a CHAdeMO system, and a full charge on a standard three-phase 200 VAC / 100 A power connection takes around eight hours.  

“This newly developed crane is part of our Green Solutions strategy and our commitment to reducing the CO2 emissions from our machines by 35 percent by 2030 and becoming fully climate neutral by 2050. The use of electrically driven vehicles will play a crucial role in that, and the new GR-250N EVOLT is already taking on that role and making an important contribution to our environmental protection goals,” underscores Tadano CEO Toshiaki Ujiie. “We’re confident that this crane will be successful on the market and we expect it to once again highlight our leading position when it comes to the development of environmentally compatible machines and solutions that contribute to the fight against climate change.”

Ram Luffing offshore pedestal crane (type 2400) will be used on East Anglia THREE (EA3) offshore wind farm.

Zaandam, Netherlands-headquartered lifting and service specialist KenzFigee, which designs and builds cranes for the marine, offshore and wind energy industries, has won a contract to deliver an offshore pedestal crane. It’s for Oslo based engineering company Aker Solutions, for use on a windfarm high-voltage direct current convertor station, for ScottishPower Renewables, on the East Anglia THREE (EA3) offshore wind farm in the UK.

The delivery involves an electric hydraulic box boom offshore Ram Luffing 2400 type designed and manufactured by KenzFigee. The crane will be designed and verified in accordance with the EN13852-1 and certified against DNVGL-ST-0378 lifting requirements, with a focus on safety, reliability and easy and low maintenance. According to KenzFigee, to ensure the highest possible quality the crane will be equipped with high-end west European brands and assembled and tested at its premises in The Netherlands. 

The expected delivery of the Ram Luffing offshore crane is scheduled for the second quarter in 2024.
“We are very pleased to have been selected by Aker Solutions for the design and delivery of our robust offshore pedestal crane for installation on the East Anglia THREE (EA3) HVDC converter station, which will be located in the North Sea off the east coast of England,” said Robert de Rijcke, CCO of KenzFigee. “This contract award perfectly fits in our strategy to increase the supply of our electrically driven products to the renewable industry”,

The new fifth generation of Link-Belt’s established 218 series of lattice boom crawler cranes, the 218|V, made its debut at ConExpo 2023.

The 110-ton (99.79 tonne) capacity crane has a new design that Link-Belt Cranes believes will appeal to general contractors, crane rental houses, engineering firms, and owner/operator companies, just as its predecessors have.

The crane has a new 12” (30.4 cm) touchscreen LMI operating system which Link-Belt says offers better visibility with improved sightlines. Also, ergonomic foot pedals are closer to the cab floor to give better unobstructed views of ground level.

The new display has an operator interface with new counterweight sensing for live readout of stacked counterweight, live goundbearing, swing angle indicator, list and trim indicator, engine RPM monitoring, and improved diagnostics. The crane operator is assisted by on-board high-resolution winch-view, back-up, and non-cab side swing-view cameras with night vision to enhance jobsite visibility from within the cab.

A new optional lighting package also adds LED light on the cabside upper, below the upper and on the front cab for jobsite settings that require additional early morning or evening cover.

The 218|V has a Cummins QSB 6.7 Stage 5 engine that delivers 281 hp of power to a Kawasaki pump and motor package for what Link_belt describes as, ‘fast, responsive, fingertip control providing simultaneous operation wherever it is needed’. The 218|V can be run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) which is also fully mixable with regular diesel fuel.  

The crane’s 218|V’s Eco Winch system is designed to provide greater fuel economy resulting in lower operating costs, less engine RPM under load, fewer emissions, and all the necessary line pull needed with a 28 mm rope. When activated by the operator the Eco hoist provides maximum line speed with lighter loads all with the engine under 1,000 RPM. Also, standard equipped is operator-selectable ‘auto-engine shutdown’ allowing the engine to shut down automatically after extended periods of inactivity so long as critical operating criteria are met. Also new for the 218|V is an extended hydraulic oil service interval to 4,000 hours (previously 2,000 hours).

The 218|V’s lower comes with the same undercarriage components and two-speed travel as the previous 218 HSL but is now equipped with quick deploy swing-out axle extenders. New car body counterweights (front and rear) feature a hook and pin design that fits between side frames allowing access to side frames for extend and retract. The front car body counterweight has an attached toolbox for additional storage.

With regards to counterweight and attachments, the 218|V self-assembles with 68,000 lbs. (30 844 kg) of upper counterweight and 30,200 lbs. (13 698 kg) of lower car body counterweight. The counterweight removal system is common to Link-Belt’s telecrawler lineup and comes with a remote control for single person operation. An additional 12,000 lbs. (5 443 kg) of counterweight provide a five percent average capacity gain over previous market leading 218 HSL.

            New quick reeve boom head with button style termination for easy setup for block and ball removal from a 26 mm rope. Lattice boom extensions on the 218|V are common to 218 HSL. Maximum main boom length is 230 ft. (70 m) and maximum fixed-jib length is 75 ft. (22.8 m). Maximum boom-and-jib combination gives the 218|V a maximum tip height of 279 ft. (85 m). Main boom for the new 218|V will come with new pendant storage brackets for secure pendant storage when transporting any section of main boom, with optional boom floodlights.
Other crane features include new access ladders and steps to the upper work platform, main load transports under 100,000 lbs (45 359 kg), 160 ft. (48.7 m) of boom on three 50 ft. (15.2 m) trailers, and power pack lug mounting brackets as standard.

            “Larger cranes often get more publicity for making eye-catching big lifts, but the daily, versatile workhorse in the industry is this size of machine,” said product manager for crawler cranes, Brian Elkins.

Tadano reveals electric GR-1000XLL EVOLT rough terrain crane prototype at ConExpo 2023.
A highlight of crane manufacturer Tadano’s stand at the recent ConExpo 2023 show in Las Vegas, USA, was the display of a prototype of its new electric GR-1000XLL EVOLT rough terrain crane – the world’s first battery electric rough terrain crane. Tadano announced the crane will be launched in 2024 – first in the USA and in Canada. Additional markets will then follow.

The GR-1000XLL EVOLT can travel to work sites and take care of all lifting operations there exclusively with energy supplied by its batteries making fully zero-emission operation possible.
Details regarding the crane’s specifications were limited until ConExpo adding to the sense of anticipation surrounding the unveiling. Further details will be released nearer to its official launch but here’s what we now know… 

Battery life:
A single battery charge is enough for up to nine hours of crane operation, or five hours of crane operation with a travel distance of up to 12.5 miles (20 km). This, says Tadano, is enough to cover an entire typical workday for this crane model. A regenerative braking function lengthens both running time and range.

Charging:
Charging takes just two hours with a US-COMBO CCS1 connection and about seven hours with normal charging on a three-phase 240 VAC, 100 A commercial power supply connection.
Unlimited operation with the crane plugged into a power outlet is, of course, also available.

Performance:
Performance is the same as that of its diesel-driven counterpart, the GR-1000XLL-4, putting it in the 100 USt / 90.7t class. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 194 kW ensuring that the GR-1000XLL EVOLT has the same lifting capacity and operating speed as the diesel model. It has a top speed of 11.2 mph (18 km/h), and its dimensions are exactly the same as those of the GR-1000XLL-4.

Emissions savings:
Tadano calculates that, compared to a GR-1000XLL-4, the GR-1000XLL EVOLT will save around 2,200 gallons of diesel with a resulting reduction of more than 24 US-tons of CO2 emissions a year for an average crane usage scenario.
“This crane will make an invaluable contribution to achieving our goal of reducing the CO2 emissions from our products by 35 percent by 2030,” underscores Toshiaki Ujiie, president and CEO of Tadano.

“In our role as the Tadano Group, we are deeply aware of our social responsibility for the environment and climate. This is why we’ve committed ourselves to actively and significantly contributing to making a decarbonised society a reality with our products and manufacturing processes. Terex Cranes is split into two separate entities: Terex Tower Cranes and Terex Rough Terrain Cranes.

Terex Materials Processing — global manufacturer of materials processing and lifting machinery — announces the transformation of Terex Cranes into two separate entities: Terex Tower Cranes and Terex Rough Terrain Cranes. According to Terex, the reorganisation involves investment with independent leaders and brand identities as well as expansion of manufacturing capacity, including a brand-new facility to manufacture self-erecting cranes. Terex Tower Cranes and Terex Rough Terrain Cranes will sit within the ‘Lifting’ category of Terex Materials Processing’s broadening equipment portfolio.

“We see a lot of potential for Terex Tower Cranes and Terex Rough Terrain Cranes,” says Kieran Hegarty, President Terex Materials Processing. “Since they are two completely different set of products, manufactured in two independent facilities, it makes sense to separate them to provide more focus and clarity. We have new brand identities for Terex Tower Cranes and Terex Rough Terrain Cranes and each business now has its own individual general manager who will execute independent growth strategies — broadening their specific product portfolio and expanding distribution partners for those products globally while enhancing support for their distribution network.”

Marco Gentilini – Vice President & General Manager, is heading up Terex Tower Cranes, to include flat top, luffing jib, hammerhead and self-erecting tower cranes manufactured at its Fontanafredda facility, in north-eastern Italy.
Identifying a particular room for expansion in self-erecting cranes, Gentilini says, “We have appointed Nicola Castenetto to lead the product development, strategic planning, sales, and post-sales activities of self-erecting cranes. Terex Rough Terrain Cranes
Giancarlo Montanari – General Manager, is leading Terex Rough Terrain Cranes, to include its RT range and more recently launched TRT range, which features the TEOS operating system that enhances information flow and operating efficiency, T-link features, a new ergonomic cab with wide visibility, new Stage V engines, and a new boom with three extension modes. Manufactured at Crespellano in Northern Italy, Terex Rough Terrain Cranes are compact, versatile, and easily maneuverable, with different steering modes to turn in very small spaces. “Being physically based at Crespellano and having full responsibility for both the internal side of the Terex Rough Terrain Cranes business as well as the outside, customer-facing side ensures that there is focus, continuity of oversight, coordination and support across all departments,” he says.
Continuing on key priorities, Montanari says, “During my time so far with Terex, I have been able to meet distributors and customers; and the key thing they look for is performance. The crane must be easy to use and maintain, to maximise their productivity. And certainly, our TRT range with the new TEOS operating system and T-Link telematics ticks all those boxes. Bigge Crane and Rigging, a US-based provider of crane rental and sales services, announced its acquisition of a new Kobelco CK2000G-3 crawler crane at the opening of the ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas. Its new crane was displayed on Kobelco’s stand.

“I intend to add 20 CK2000 crawlers to our fleet as soon as Kobelco can deliver the cranes,” said Weston Settlemier, president and CEO of Bigge Crane and Rigging. “Kobelco crawlers are the most reliable cranes in our 300-crane crawler fleet. This size crane is the perfect replacement for our older 14000 and HC 275 crawler cranes.”

The Kobelco CK2000G-3 has a maximum lifting capacity of 200 tons, a 10% improvement compared to the CK2000-II.

UK-based Select Plant Hire has ordered four new Terex CTL1600 luffing jib tower cranes – bringing its fleet total of CTL1600s to nine. Terex Tower Cranes says this makes it the largest and newest fleet of these cranes in the world.

According to Terex, its CTL1600 is a popular choice for construction and rental companies globally and is well-suited for high-rise buildings on urban job sites. With a maximum capacity of 66 t (72.8 USt) and jib length of 75 m (246 ft) it is the biggest luffing jib crane in its range. It is also equipped with features including T-Torque slewing technology, Terex Power Plus, and Terex Power Match.
Terex Tower Cranes says, due to its heavy capacity, the CTL1600 is in high demand in the UK – especially for heavy lift requirements such as precast and other projects that incorporate offsite manufacturing and modern methods of construction, with Select Plant Hire identifying particular demand for using these cranes coming from the waste-to-energy and data centres being commissioned across the UK.

US crane rental and sales firm Bigge Crane and Rigging Co. announced the addition of Liebherr’s newest LRT 1130-2.1 rough terrain (RT) crane to its Perfect Feet at ConExpo 2023.

Link-Belt Cranes is displaying its newest rough terrain crane, the 85 ton (80 tonne) 85|RT, at ConExpo 2023 in Las Vegas, USA. The crane has a new Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). Designed to improve the efficiency and the lifespan of the crane while reducing fuel consumption and minimising emissions.

“In our ongoing effort to produce products that are more sustainable, our engineering team has leveraged some of the latest, cutting edge technology to develop an APU unit that is lean, clean, and green,” said Kelly Fiechter, Product for Rough Terrain Cranes.

For Link-Belt, this patent pending APU design will be a new option that allows a crane to keep the operator ‘cab comfortable’ by maintaining the integrated HVAC system while the engine is off. The APU will run from a self-charging lithium-ion battery power source.

Once the engine is started the APU will go into charge mode and the crane’s engine takes over as the power supply. The APU when used in combination with the 85|RT’s auto idle/shutdown feature provides the operator with uninterrupted comfort regardless of engine status.

According to Link-Belt, a study of shared telematics data concluded that almost 70 percent of rough terrain crane engine hours are logged at engine idle. This APU system is designed to help reduce idle time, reduce engine hours on the crane, reduce engine emissions, and potentially reduce required regular service. The APU is also very quiet, compared to main engine run sound levels, adds Link-Belt. Testing for the APU is underway on the 85|RT and should be complete by end of summer 2023.

Urbandale, Iowa, USA-based outrigger pad manufacturer Dica is launching new products at the ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas, USA. These include a new engineered steel and composite crane pad, and composite cribbing timbers. Dica will also debut SlatTrax temporary roadways to the construction market, which the company acquired in late 2022.

The steel and composite crane pad is called the EcoMax. Dica says it made it in response to industry demand for durable and engineered equipment stabilisation at a lower price point.
EcoMax crane pads combine alternating solid composite ‘timbers’ and steel I-beams connected with through-bolts for maximum load distribution. Dica’s patented EcoMax has similar stiffness, strength, and performance properties as its FiberMax Crane Pads or steel pads but is less expensive than either of those options, the company outlines.

EcoMax is suitable for distributing concentrated loads from equipment with outriggers, such as mobile cranes, concrete pump trucks, and self-erecting tower cranes. EcoMax is heavier than FiberMax Crane Pads it is lighter than solid steel mats, explains Dica.

EcoMax Crane Pads are available in four sizes ranging from 20 to 40 square feet with maximum rated capacities of 175,000 lbs to 325,000 lbs, respectively.

Dica’s second new product is composite lumber cribbing timber designed to support static loads. The cribbing timber is made from post-industrial recycled materials. Dica says the cribbing timbers will not splinter, break, or warp and that they offer more resilience and durability than wood, even in extreme environments.

The third new product making its ConExpo debut is SlatTrax – an engineered temporary roadway designed to help contractors reduce crew size and crew fatigue while helping to protect the ground, gain site access and prevent ruts. Made of HDPE recycled plastic, SlatTrax is lightweight, durable, and fast to deploy, says Dica. For use with compact and medium-duty equipment weighing up to 40 tons, SlatTrax is designed to minimise damage to grass, sand, field turf, or paved areas where equipment or personnel must travel.

DICA acquired SlatTrax in late 2022.  “SlatTrax is a natural expansion of the Dica brand,” said Kris Koberg, CEO of Dica. “It is ideal for construction or anywhere ground protection, site access, or staging areas are needed. It provides a unique labour-saving and fast deployment solution for equipment setup that improves working conditions, safety, and productivity.”

Tampa, Florida, USA-based crane rental and rigging service Sims Crane & Equipment has expanded its fleet with an LR 1250.1 unplugged crawler crane. The battery-powered LR 1250.1 unplugged is the first model of Liebherr’s Unplugged series to be sold on the US East Coast. The crawler crane with electric drive system offers the same performance as the conventional version just with zero emissions.

Jackson Sims, the owner of Sims Crane, said, “We are honoured to partner with Liebherr and be on the forefront to serve a vastly growing need for alternative energy to Sims' ever-growing customer base.”

The LR 1250.1 unplugged is one of the first unplugged crawler crane models to be released in the United States. The models of the unplugged series can perform either via battery (unplugged) or plugged in offering identical performance to the conventional version.

The battery can last up to approximately eight hours based on individual workload. The machine also comes with an app that provides the status of the power of the batteries.

The unplugged series offers local zero emissions and very little noise pollution, making this the ideal crane for Sims to work in more populated areas including amusement parks, hospitals, and residential areas, said Liebherr. 

Sims Cranes’ new 1250.1 unplugged will be delivered with a 242 ft main boom and 311 ft luffing jib and aux tip. This addition will further aid their mission of providing turnkey crane and rigging solutions.

Hiab targets city work applications with latest Effer loader crane.

Hiab, part of Cargotec, has launched the Effer iQ.1400 HP – a super heavy loader crane equipped with Hiab’s SPACEevo control system designed for improved productivity and safer operations. The size and vertical performance of the new loader crane make it ideal for operations in metropolitan areas, says Hiab.

The Effer iQ.1400 HP is a 135 tonne metre (tm) crane that has a V10-Force decagonal boom. It has a maximum vertical reach of 39.5 metres and with a jib of 26 tm it can deliver materials with an ‘up and over’ of 26 metres.

The V10-Force boom, first used in the Effer 1000, is designed to provide increased strength for vertical performance and improved overall precision, further enhanced by the advanced control system. 

The high lifting capacity makes it suitable for many applications but the possible 83 degree working angle is perfectly suited for operations in metropolitan areas. Being able to work closer to the buildings makes it less obtrusive to the surroundings and the boom profile reduces the side oscillations for high-precision load delivery, says Hiab. The low weight and compact frame size make it possible to install it on smaller trucks than is usual for this lifting category, which lower purchase and operating costs, as well as CO2 emissions, it adds.

“Customers will be able to experience a whole new level of heavy load lifting, with a crane that excels in vertical reach of over 39 metres,” said Marcel Boxem, vice president, Sales and Product Management, Loader Cranes Heavy & Super Heavy, Hiab.  “The engineering, combined with a CombiDrive4 remote control from Olsbergs gives operators unprecedented precision even at high heights. The 135 tm range delivers performances similar to bigger segment cranes. The smaller frame makes it suitable for installations on smaller trucks and provides plenty of payload, not normally seen in this segment.”

Precision and safety are enhanced by the SPACEevo control system, says Hiab, that provides advanced functions for veteran and novice operators alike. The Load Stability System for vertical movements (LSS-V) compensates for unintentionally excessive lever movement in vertical operations, while the Variable Stability Logic PLUS (VSL+) feature optimises lifting capacity by monitoring the position and pressure of the stabiliser legs. The Dynamic Load Chart (DLC-S) reduces setup time by simulating the load capacity before opening the stabilisers.

The Effer iQ.1400 HP shares parts and controls with the other iQ and iX range cranes. This makes it easier for operators to use different size cranes and owners of multiple units can lower their warehouse inventory by storing common spare parts that can be used across iX and iQ cranes.

As the crane is connected, owners can access HiConnect. It provides access to real-time insights about the condition of the equipment, to further increase productivity and operator safety. Customers can monitor equipment status, plan service and improve operations from whole fleets down to single units. HiConnect is available in two levels: HiConnect Insights and HiConnect Premium.

If specified, customers can purchase a ProCare service contract to secure original performance with regular preventative maintenance checks and scheduled inspections. Repairs are covered as part of the most extensive package, ProCare Total R&M.

Fleet expansion for ALL with four new Liebherr LR 1250.1s and four Liebherr LR 1300.1 SXs.

North American crane rental and sales operation ALL Family of Companies is adding eight new Liebherr lattice boom crawler cranes to its fleet. The purchase includes four each of 275-ton capacity Liebherr LR 1250.1 and 331-ton capacity Liebherr LR 1300.1 SX.

Crawlers in this weight class are always in high demand, says ALL, and the purchase gives additional choice to ALL customers with an affinity for Liebherr products. “In the past decade, Liebherr has made great inroads into the North American market with its service support and parts availability,” said Rick Mikut, crawler crane division manager for ALL. “Customers who get to know the brand through Liebherr all terrain (AT) cranes often develop a loyalty that extends into other categories.”

The crawlers are expected to go work on wind farms, in industrial and energy plants, and in road and bridge work, all bread-and-butter sectors for crane rental that remain strong.

“We have a lot of work on the books, with heightened activity in all geographies and market sectors,” said Mikut. “These additional Liebherr crawlers will be welcomed and put to work as soon as they’re ready.”

Chad Rados, project manager for ALL, points to Liebherr’s attention to detail as a benefit to users. “They’ve listened to their crane rental partners and fine-tuned every aspect of assembly to shave off 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there, and the result is you ultimately have an assembly time that is two to three hours faster than before. That’s a cost savings for customers.”

Each unit in the purchase will include both fixed jibs and luffing jibs, as well as the latest electronics package from Liebherr for lift planning and execution. Delivery is expected to begin in early summer.

UFL warns of increase in thefts of crane load monitoring equipment across France.

French crane association UFL – the Union Française du Levage – has warned crane companies in France of a growing spate of thefts of a wide range of safe load monitoring equipment. The sharp increase in thefts is country-wide and affecting both urban and rural areas.

UFL, an ESTA member, is asking the French police and other authorities for increased support in combatting the thefts but in the meantime the association is warning its members and international companies operating in France to be aware of the problem and to take anti-theft measures whenever possible.

UFL says the criminals are targeting new and old machines alike and are professional – they know what they are doing, know how to get into the crane and know where the parts are.

Eric Stroppiana, UFL president, and technical and commercial director of Groupe Foselev, said, “This is a growing problem. The thefts appear to be professional and well-organised – presumably the equipment is being resold and probably taken out of the country but at this stage we don’t know more.”

Hervé Rebollo, managing director of DLR – the national federation that UFL is a member of – added, “The thefts are at a level we have never seen before. The situation is crazy and the police and the authorities are not doing enough.”

UFL is compiling a file of such incidents to show the scale of the problem and to put pressure on the authorities to take action. As a result, it is asking any company that has suffered such a theft to get in touch. Details can be found on its website at www.uflevage.fr.

French crane rental firm expands its tower crane fleet via SNM Group.

Loga, a family-owned tower crane rental company based in Paris, France, has ordered ten Terex CTT 222-10 (city class flat top cranes) from French company SNM Group, a specialist in the sale and maintenance of both port and land handling equipment.

The cranes will be used in Paris and in the south of France for various construction residential and school projects, with SNM having bases in Nantes, Lyon, and Paris.

Marr Contracting’s Marr 2480D Heavy Lift Luffing (HLL) crane to be used on Brisbane waterfront development.

Australian heavy lift luffing tower cranes and heavy lifting services specialist Marr Contracting has been awarded the subcontract to deliver specialised heavy lifting crane services on the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, Brisbane, Australia. Marr will use its Marr 2480D Heavy Lift Luffing (HLL) crane which it says is the world’s largest capacity tower crane. 

Construction of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge started in late 2021 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. At a length of 460 metres the bridge will be among the longest span cable stay pedestrian bridges in the world.

Marr was engaged by Connect Brisbane – a group of bridge design, engineering and construction specialists – to carry out more than ten major lifts and general construction lifting requirements over a period of 12 months.

The Marr M2480D arrived onsite in January 2023. It has been erected and already completed its first lift: a 25 metre by 25 metre working platform.

Working with Marr’s Brisbane-based engineers, Robert Bird Group, Marr has located the crane on a platform in the middle of Brisbane River. With a 64-metre-long boom it can in-stall the bridge mast while minimising any impacts on boats using the river.

The heaviest lift the tower crane will undertake for the project is 180 tonnes and will be the 28-metre-tall prefabricated steel masthead.

According to BESIX Watpac project director, Tim Deere, “Our in-house engineering team was instrumental in identifying this crane at tender phase as the preferred lifting solution for the project. After comparing barge crane and tower crane options, the team confirmed the M2480D was the most suitable crane in the Australian market capable of lifting the fully assembled mast head.”

Marr says its experience working on the construction of the 318-metre towers on Turkey’s 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, Perth’s Matagarup Bridge, and Dubai’s Water Canal Bridges provided Connect Brisbane with a frame of reference for addressing the challenges of constructing the 83-metre-tall mast of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge.

A Demag crawler crane on a modified barge delivers modular villas for Red Sea showcase resort

Netherlands-headquartered international heavy lift and transport specialist Mammoet has delivered the first batch of modularly constructed villas for the Sheybarah Island resort, Saudi Arabia.

The resort is being built by Saudi-based developer Red Sea Global; once complete it will comprise 73 overwater and beach villas and the resort aims to showcase sustainability.

Mammoet won the contract to transport and install the villa pods in May 2022. The first batch comprised four villas which needed to be shipped from the UAE to Saudi Arabia. For this Mammoet teamed up with logistics and marine solutions provider P&O Maritime Logistics.

For the installation itself Mammoet used its 650t capacity Demag CC3800 crawler crane positioned on its ALE 250modified barge. The shallow draft of the barge meant that there was minimal disturbance to the marine environment.

 At the construction jetty the crane loaded and placed the first orb on the barge deck and sailed to the installation area. Once at the location, the barge was positioned using a GPS system and the barge’s winches for precise alignment with the foundation.

The barge was then stabilised using a retrofitted 300t spud jacking system provided by Combifloat – Mammoet’s partner for floating and self-elevating marine equipment suitable for nearshore operations. Safe and efficient lifting, lowering and (re)positioning of the barge was achieved through a locally controlled jacking mechanism and a four-point mooring system, explains Mammoet.

For lifting the modular villa into position the CC3800’s Superlift system has been replaced by a system designed specifically for the project where the back mast of the CC3800 is ‘tied back’ to the barge. This gives the crane enough capacity to place the orb onto the foundation without requiring the additional mass of a Superlift tray, says Mammoet.

Robert van Tinteren, lead project engineer for Mammoet, comments, “Creative engineering at its best. It has been an exciting nine months building up to this point, but it never gets tedious to see the incredible things we at Mammoet can do when we put our minds to it!”

French tower crane sales and rental specialist Valente Grue Assistance (VGA), a Potain dealer for the Rhône-Alpes region of France, has assembled two Potain MDT 109 top-slewing tower cranes on France’s largest glacier, the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) near Chamonix in the French Alps, using a helicopter in the last four months.

In May 2022 VGA assembled a Potain MDT 109 top-slewing tower crane at an altitude of 2,000 metres for the construction of a logistics base. In September 2022 VGA then assembled a second Potain MDT 109 at an altitude of 1,600 m to help build a cable car station.

The MDT 109 was chosen for its load curve, which met the needs of both sites in the same configuration — a 34 m height under hook, 35 m jib and 2.85 t lifting capacity — on fixing angles. Overall, the MDT 109 has a maximum load of 6 t and 1.35 t at 55 m.

Due to the remote location, the cranes had to be assembled by helicopter, so Potain carried out a thorough study to fully understand the challenges and determine the right process. In addition to the weather conditions, the team had to factor in the weight of the elements, which could not exceed 3.6 t. Potain technicians supported the VGA and customer teams throughout the unloading of the elements in the drop zone and assembly.

Potain says the MDT 109 is highly regarded for its compact design and low parts weights, which make it easy to transport and assemble. The Crane Control System (CCS) also enables fast commissioning. The crane can be calibrated, and the safety devices adjusted in just 15 minutes via the CCS display in the cab.

Despite unexpected snowfall during assembly on the second site, both cranes were completed in under four days.

90tm loader crane with SPACEevo control system expands Hiab’s Effer brand offering.

Loader crane manufacturer Hiab, part of Cargotec, has launched the Effer iQ.950 HP – a 90 tonnes metre (tm) loader crane, part of its heavy range.

The Effer iQ.950 HP has Hiab’s V12-Power boom profile and a new operating system called SPACEevo. Hiab says the iQ.950 HP is a multi-purpose crane suitable for a wide range of vertical and horizontal lifting jobs that can be performed safely and precisely, even at high speeds, thanks to its new control system.

With the SPACEevo control system the lifting capacity can be increased via the VSL+ (Variable Stability Logic-plus) function, that uses the load as an active part of the stabilisation setup, while the DLC-S (Dynamic Load Chart) is designed to reduce the time it takes to configure the stabilisation setup.

The crane comes with a new CombiDrive4 remote control, from Olsbergs, which can be customised to operators’ preferences with regards to the speed of operation. It includes a Con-firmed View safety function that detects if the operator is in a position to see the opening of the stabilisers.

The crane also has a variable displacement pump for increased flow performances and reduced fuel consumption and is coated in nDurance, which Hiab describes as a nano-based technology coating for long-lasting protection.

“The new Effer models provide our customers with efficient loader cranes that increase both payload capacity and lifting performance thanks to our engineering and technological advancements,” says Marcel Boxem, vice president, Sales & Product Management Loader Cranes Heavy & Super Heavy, Hiab. “They offer the same performance as bigger models but can be installed on smaller and more cost-conscious trucks. The Effer iQ.950 HP shares parts and controls with the other iQ. and iX. range cranes. This, says Hiab, makes it easier for operators to use the different models and owners of multiple units can lower their warehouse inventory by storing common spare parts that can be used across the series.

In selected markets owners can access Hiab’s ProCare service contracts and the connected service HiConnect.

Israeli distributor orders a total of 26 Terex tower cranes to serve growing market demand.

Tel Aviv, Israel-headquartered automotive specialist Mayer’s Cars & Trucks (MCT), which is also a distributor for Terex Tower Cranes in Israel, has ordered 15 Terex tower cranes. This follows an order for 11 placed at the end of 2022. Terex says the fleet will support MCT in serving the growing demand in the Israeli market for tower cranes.

The order consists of a variety of flat top and luffing jib tower cranes, including the new CTT 292-12, a flat top 12 t capacity crane with a jib length of up to 70m and a tip load of up to 3.06 t.

Terex says the CTT 292-12 offers versatility in terms of its tower mast, chassis and jib lengths and the crane comes with Terex’s latest tech including: Power Plus and Power Match functions; T-torque slewing technology; a new cabin that can be equipped with T-Link telemetry.

Bartosz Irzyniec, sales manager, Terex Tower Cranes, says, “This order is the culmination of a relatively short, but fruitful relationship with MCT, from our first phone call just two years ago in February 2021. 7,500-tonne hotel moved by Sinotrans Heavy-Lift in China.

Chinese heavy lift company Sinotrans Heavy-Lift was commissioned to reposition a 7,500-tonne hotel by 500 metres to comply with environmental regulations in the city of Sanya, Hainan province, China. The company says it is the world's heaviest building transport ever carried out.

To move the hotel Sinotrans distributed the load on 254 axle lines of Scheuerle SPMT powered by 15 power pack units.

A key challenge was the uneven distribution of the load due to the asymmetrical architecture of the 90 metre long, 35 metre wide and 20 metre high building. Nevertheless, Sinotrans had to level and position the structure with the utmost precision. Furthermore, the experts from Sinotrans had to turn the building clockwise by 63 degrees and subsequently counter-clockwise by 63 degrees during transportation in or-der to reach the new location.

To master the task, Sinotrans coupled the self-propelled SPMT platform transporters at different angles to each other to form a fan-shaped combination. According to Sinotrans, the high load capacity and the good synchronisation of the individual modules very much favoured the use of SPMT axle lines as, with-out them, the heavy goods logistics specialist would not have achieved the required high level of precision. It took Sinotrans eight hours to lift the building and transport it precisely and safely over the 500-metre-long route with the help of the SPMT axle lines and set it up again at its destination.

Sinotrans is a long-standing customer of TII Scheuerle and its fleet includes 60 Scheuerle SPMT axle lines. Additional modules for this job came from the joint venture Sinotrans Sarens Logistics and other cooperation partners.

MONOPILE INSTALLATION FOR DUTCH WIND FARM COMPLETE

Van Oord successfully installs 70 monopiles for the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm.

The final monopile for the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm has been successfully installed by Van Oord, bringing the total to 70. The offshore wind farm is located 18.5 kilometres off the coast of the Netherlands, near the seaside resort of Egmond aan Zee. It is being built and run by CrossWind – a joint venture between Shell and Eneco.

Once finished it will have a total installed capacity of 759 MW, generating at least 3.3 TWh per year. This is enough renewable electricity to meet 2.8% of the Netherlands’ electricity demand. The monopiles are the foundations for the wind turbines. The first monopile was installed on October 17th 2022.

Van Oord says it installed all 70 monopiles in a short period of time despite strong wind and cold weather. As a balance of plant contractor for CrossWind Van Oord’s activities encompass the de-sign, engineering, procurement, construction and installation of the wind turbine foundations. Van Oord engaged DEME to deploy the jack-up vessel Innovation to install the monopiles.

Van Oord is also involved in the design, engineering, procurement and installation of the inter array cables, as well as the transport and installation of the wind turbines themselves. Meanwhile Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel MPI Resolution is installing secondary steel to complete the foundations. The secondary steel sets consist of boat landings, main access platforms (with davit cranes) and internal platforms. The platforms will be used for maintenance activities once the wind farm is operational. Van Oord will deploy cable-laying vessel Nexus to install the cables starting in March this year.

Roeland Ris, project director Van Oord, said, “After an extensive period of preparations, it's great to now actually see the outlines of the offshore wind farm. Thanks to the project team and all partners involved who worked with great efforts and enthusiasm on reaching this important milestone to have all monopiles in place. With the supply of secondary steel and inter array cables on target and our offshore installation vessels fully operational, the construction of the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm is progressing well on schedule.”

Wybren de Vries, balance of plant package manager at CrossWind said, “The installation of the monopiles was an immense operation, with the monopiles weighing between 788 tons and 960 tons each. During the installation works CrossWind and Van Oord promoted and maintained an open culture, in which we acted as one team. I am convinced that this approach defined a big part of our success in reaching this milestone in a safe and timely manner.”

The 683 E, an 80 t telescopic crawler crane, expands Sennebogen’s crane range

German manufacturer Sennebogen has added another model to its range of telescopic crawler cranes: the 80-tonne capacity 683 E.

The mid-sized machine fits into the gap between the existing 673 E and the 6103 E and is the ninth model in the series.

According to Sennebogen the 683 E, with its heavy-duty boom and powerful travel and winch motors, has been built for a wide range of applications The crane is also suitable for pick-and-carry work and lifting operations on inclines of up to four degrees.

The 683 E is powered by a 186 kW Cummins engine with Stage V exhaust gas treatment. The main and auxiliary winches are driven by a high-pressure piston engine which provides a tractive force of 72 kN each and speeds of up to 120 m/min.

The individually configurable equipment can be supplemented by a range of options including a programmable working range limiter plus safety and low-temperature packages. This, Sennebogen believes, will particularly appeal to users in specialised civil engineering and hydraulic engineering sectors.

The crane has a four-section full power main boom with a length of 42 m. Multicylinder technology means the maintenance-free boom provides variable telescoping with force-locking. The crane’s reach can be further extended to up to 57 m with an optional double folding jib (that can be angled).

The 683 E’s undercarriage has a maximum track width of 4.2 m. This can be reduced symmetrically or asymmetrically to 2.68 m with the load charts being automatically adapted to the respective track width.

Using a radio remote control the 6103 E can unload itself from a truck and is completely self-assembling. With crawler tracks attached it has a transport width of only 3.5 m. After disassembly of the crawler, the transport weight is reduced by almost 20 t and the transport width contracts to 3.0 m.  

The crane comes as standard with 800 mm triple grouser shoes designed to provide stability while keeping floor pressure at a minimum. 

The crane has Sennebogen’s Maxcab cabin that offers up to 20 degrees of tilt. If required, a hydraulically elevating cab that can be tilted 30 degrees at an eye level of 5.55 m, can be supplied. Sennebogen says the cabin has large windows for maximum visibility.

The crane can also be operated from outside the cabin via a radio remote control. Cameras and a large monitor are designed to extend the operator's field of vision to the rear and right side and can also be used to monitor the winches.

The electric dual-axis control system features joystick control buttons for optional attachments and the graphically displayed load moment limiter. The system provides an audio-visual warning and locks the control lever when the load limits are reached or exceeded. The Sencon control system provides important diagnostics as well as valuable data on payloads, boom angle, boom length, and radius. 

Sennebogen says the 683 E has been designed to be easy to service, with an easy-to-access central lubrication point for the boom base axle, luffing cylinder, and slewing ring and clearly identified components.

Italian rental giant expands fleet with three GRT655L rough terrain cranes from Grove.

Italian headquartered Massucco T. has expanded its crane fleet with three new Grove GRT655L rough terrain models. It operates a fleet of over 1,800 vehicles covering the lifting and earthmoving markets. It was founded over 60 years ago and has 13 branches across Italy, France, and Tunisia and is one of the largest rental companies in Italy.

“There were many reasons behind our choice to invest in Grove again,” said Roberto Borgogno, sales manager at Massucco T. “Our previous experience with the brand, and our awareness of the reliability and excellent technical support were relevant. But perhaps the main attraction was the advanced technologies on the crane. These are not gadgets, but digital tools that impact crane management and maintenance. For example, the diagnostics feature is an extremely important way to keep on top of operating and maintenance costs. It allows us to precisely schedule service based on working hours.”

The crane’s onboard diagnostics enable the actual hours of many machine functions (winch, boom, slewing, engine, hydraulics etc.) to be recorded, ensuring maintenance is performed when needed. The frequency of maintenance is also reduced due to a design focussed on increased component service life, says Grove. For example, by mounting the outrigger jack cylinders upside down, the chrome part of the cylinder and the seals are protected against damage, sand, dust, and other contaminants. And by using hydraulic disc-brakes with double callipers, instead of the more common, less-efficient pneumatic design, there is no need for a separate maintenance schedule.

Borgogno also cited the crane’s compact and portable nature as being important factors, too.  “The GRT655L is just 3m wide and has a removable counterweight, so it’s easy to transport on a trailer,” adds Borgogno. Despite these small dimensions the crane has a capacity of 60 tonnes, a 43 m boom, a tilting cab, and a removable counterweight – all features usually only found on larger rough-terrain cranes.

“The GRT655L’s impressive load charts and performance are a big selling point, but even more importantly, it’s a crane with features that are perfect for the Italian and European market – and that’s a major advantage in the rental business,” continued Borgogno. “With these purchases, our fleet is more versatile, allowing us to further extend our offering and cover a wider range of applications, from assembling prefabricated buildings to maintenance and process work in industrial plants.”

The cranes were presented to the Italian rental giant at a handover event at Manitowoc’s Niella Tanaro factory, just 30 minutes from Massucco T.’s headquarters in Cuneo, Piedmont.

A new €50 million educational centre and cable car is being built high in the French Alps. To help build it Vinci Construction France is using a 150 EC-B flat-top crane which was erected with the help of a helicopter.

A new educational centre focussed on climate change, plus a new cable car station, is being built at the Montenvers mountain station on France’s largest glacier: the Mer de Glace. It is at an altitude of 1,913 metres, near Mont Blanc, Chamonix, in the French Alps.

Construction company Vinci Construction France worked with crane manufacturer Liebherr to select the right crane for the job. Originally, due to the size of the loads that needed to be lifted, a crane in the 250 tonne class was required. A crane of this size, however, would have been too heavy for assembly by the helicopter which, depending on temperature and altitude, could move a maximum of 3,800 kilograms.

The solution was to adapt the building’s architectural plans and use lighter concrete parts. In this way Liebherr’s eight-tonne capacity 150 EC-B flat-top could be used – as its counter jib weighs 3,600kg and so could be handled by the helicopter. The flat-top also has a flexible design enabling it to be dismantled into several individual parts which helped, adds Liebherr.

Planning was key says Liebherr. An open location accessible to the helicopter and trucks was selected about 3.5 from the Montenvers mountain station. It was as close as possible in order to keep flight times, and therefore refuelling, to a minimum. From here a Kamov KA 32 A11 BC heavy-lift helicopter from Heliswiss International flew back and forth 30 times to deliver all the crane parts and tower system elements.

These parts were received by four assembly engineers from Liebherr's partner FT Montage and six flight assistants from Heliswiss International who, over the course of around eight hours, connected them to create the 150 EC-B with a tower height of over 40 metres.

The crane, with a 45-metre jib and a hook height of 42 metres, will support the construction of the new cable car station and climate change educational centre until June 2023. The Montenvers redevelopment is due to be completed in December 2024.

Austrian manufacturer of hydraulic lifting, loading and handling systems, Palfinger, has announced it is opening a new flagship hub in Poing, near Munich, Germany.

The new site, which will be almost 12,000 square metres in size, will comprise a showroom, service workshops and offices.

Palfinger said the new centre will help it expand its footprint in Germany – one of its core markets.

Palfinger believes the centre’s convenient location, near Munich, will help it further develop its relationship with customers in the area and shorten service times. “For anyone travelling via the airport, Munich-Poing is the fastest way to 'drop by’ at Palfinger to get to know the highlights of our product portfolio,” says Thomas Nußbaumer, managing director, Palfinger Germany.

Palfinger adds that Munich is also one of the most important research locations in Germany; there is a tradition here of cooperation between university, non-university and industrial research. In this environment, the company hopes there will be additional opportunities to expand its research and development partnerships.

The first phase of construction, up to 2025, will see the offices and a service and bodywork workshop built. In a second construction phase, the complex will be further expanded.

UK crane company expands fleet with truck cranes from Böcker.

UK crane rental company Berry Cranes has taken delivery of taken delivery of a new AK 36 and an-other new AK 46 truck crane, made by Böcker.

These machines complement their existing fleet of Böcker cranes, with further machines to be de-livered until 2024. This includes orders for brand-new models like the AK 42 and the new AK 48, presented at Bauma 2022 in Munich. At the same time, the company also ordered two addition-al AK 46/6000s and another AK 36/4000

“When we purchased the first Böcker crane in the UK in 2008, little were we to know just how well they would fit in,” said Berry Cranes founder and managing director, Neil Berry. “Some 15 years and 20 new machines later, it was very easy to decide where to place this order. Georgian building block specialist relies on Palfinger cranes to deliver pallets.

Building block manufacturer Road 2015 LLC, located in Georgia, has five rear-mounted Palfinger PK 17.001 SLD 3s in its fleet. According to the company the crane’s out-reach of around 13 metres and its lifting moment of nearly 16 metre tonnes make it well-suited to delivering building block pallets.

The company also identifies the crane’s radio remote control and Single Link Plus function – where the knuckle joint on the crane’s knuckle boom has been designed to offer increased lifting power at the tip – as being key features it likes. The Single Link Plus also enables the crane to be angled also upwards to work better in tight spaces and through low door openings, Palfinger adds.

ALL expands fleet with two new Manitowoc MCL300 VPCs, plus VPC-MAX attachments.

North American crane rental and sales operation ALL Family of Companies is expanding its fleet with two large Manitowoc lattice boom crawlers, plus attachments.

ALL’s order includes two new Manitowoc MCL300 VPCs, two additional VPC-MAX attachments, one MLC300 luffing jib attachment, and one MLC650 3.5-metre-wide boom attachment.

The new equipment, expected for delivery in early summer, will be strategically deployed across ALL’s national footprint.

The 330-ton class (300 tonne) crawlers have a self-erect mast cylinder designed to reduce set-up time while Manitowoc’s proprietary Variable Position Counterweight (VPC) technology eliminates the need for passive carbody weights — weight that can now be added to the upperworks to increase capacity while retaining performance and on-site mobility. According to Manitowoc, this means reduced transport configurations and a better centre of gravity for reduced ground bearing pressure.

Also enables the load chart plus the boom and jib combination lengths to be further increased with reduced tail swing – delivering greater lifting capacity in a smaller work environment.

“We’re excited to be updating and improving our MLC300-class offering to meet customer demand,” said Rick Mikut, ALL’s crawler crane division manager. “VPC-MAX and MLC300 luffing jibs have proved popular with customers in a variety of markets, including new construction, bridge construction, plant work, and others.

“These machines are so strong, and because the VPC-MAX doesn’t touch the ground, they often use less matting than similar-class cranes. With their other features for quick set-up, they get working fast, saving customers time and money.”

German crane rental firm uses new Tadano all terrain to dismantle classic rollercoaster.

Five days after taking delivery of a new Tadano AC 3.055-1 all terrain crane Euskirchen, Germany-headquartered crane service provider BSH used it for one of its specialties:

dismantling an amusement ride.

BSH used the crane to dismantle one of the main rollercoasters at the Düsseldorf Rhine Fair. The rollercoaster had a top height of 32 metres, a track length of over 1000 metres and, when in action, the rollercoaster reached a top speed of 80 km/h.

BSH worked in conjunction with a ten-person specialist rollercoaster dismantling team and, in total, there were 600 tonnes of steel, plus add-on components, to take apart.

The crane used boom lengths between 24 metres and the maximum possible 50 m, with the largest radius at 36 m. It took two-and-a-half days to dismantle the ride.

Due to the nature of the theme park space was limited. “You’d be surprised at the extreme variety of objects that get in the way when putting together and tearing down amusement rides,” says BSH’s senior director Peter Barth. “Thanks to the crane’s Flex Base system we can extend the crane’s outriggers all the way up to the actual obstacles even in asymmetrical configurations and then use the IC-1 Plus to take advantage of the crane’s maximum available lifting capacity.”

To carry out the job the crane travelled from Euskirchen to Düsseldorf with its full counterweight and a 12-tonne axle load. No additional transportation vehicles were required.

According to Tadano, the crane took just 15 minutes to setup. 

“The biggest challenge was to keep the way clear for other show people when positioning the crane,” said junior director Peter Barth. “And this was important since things always get really hectic on setup and teardown days and everyone obviously wants to get to the next fairground as quickly as possible. The crane’s compact design really came through for us there.”

Because it was the first time BSH had used this crane, Tadano sent an employee to Düsseldorf to provide any help or advice required.

New order for 27 new mobile cranes follows 24 cranes delivered in 2022.

Dubai, UAE-headquartered crane and heavy equipment specialist Al Faris is expanding its fleet with 27 Liebherr mobile cranes ordered for delivery in 2023 and 2024. The deal was struck at Bauma 2022.

The order follows 24 mobile cranes, with lifting capacities from 110 to 700 tonnes, delivered by Liebherr in 2022.

The new order includes six additional LTM 1300-6.3s. “The concept of the LTM 1300-6.3 with its 90-metre telescopic boom combined with compact dimensions is perfect for universal operations here in the Middle East, especially in the energy sector,” said Al Faris shareholder Keonne Pinto. “This type of crane is eagerly awaited in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Al Faris is one of Liebherr's largest customers worldwide and currently has 460 Liebherr cranes in its fleet – including mobile cranes ranging from the LTM 1030-2.1 to the LTM 11200-9.1 and crawler cranes ranging from the LR 1350 to the LR 11000.

SARENS REVAMPS TRAINING CENTRE AND ADDS ECOL COURSE

Sarens has increased its capacity for classroom and practical crane training and adds ESTA’s ECOL to its syllabus.

Sarens inaugurated its revamped operator training centre in Wolvertem, Belgium, in December 2022, increasing its capacity both for classroom and practical crane training operations. The centre has also included ESTA’s European Crane Operators Licence in its courses.

To mark the development, the company organised an open day giving interested individuals and companies the chance to explore the centre and discover the range of training courses on offer – and also take the opportunity to sit in a crane themselves.

Explaining the company’s support for ECOL, Sarens RDTS Manager Line Rigo said: “By adding ECOL to our training centre courses Sarens wants to support and promote the importance of professional competence and skills. Creating a uniform crane operator licence within Europe will make it more transparent to guarantee quality and reliability and more efficient to work in different countries.”

Swiss authorities recognise validity of ESTA’s European Crane Operators Licence scheme.

European association for the abnormal road transport and mobile crane rental industry, ESTA, received a boost just before Christmas as its European Crane Operators Licence scheme (ECOL) was recognised in Switzerland by the Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund, SUVA (Schweizerische Unfallversicherungsanstalt).

Alfred Suter, SUVA health and safety specialist, said, “We were pleased to note that the training of ECOL crane operators meets the requirements of the Swiss Crane Ordinance and the EKAS RL 6510.”

As a result, since January 1, 2023, an ECOL licenced operator can request the issue of a SUVA crane operator licence, Kranführerausweis Kat. A, without the need for any further training or testing.

Switzerland is the fifth territory to recognise ECOL, following Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and British Columbia in Canada.

Talks are also continuing with authorities in Germany, Spain, Ireland and the UK.

Ton Klijn, ESTA director and chair of the ECOL Supervisory Board, said, “We are delighted with the decision of the Swiss authorities and thank them for their support.

“Standards in Switzerland are very high and if experts there are happy to back ECOL, we hope that will encourage other national authorities to follow suit in the near future.

“The potential for ECOL both to raise safety standards and increase efficiency right across Europe is not in question and we look forward to further developments in the near future.”

Portfolio expansion designed to meet growing demand for sustainability and wind work.

In a deal worth 60 million euros (53 million GBP) Bergheim, Rhineland-headquartered heavy logistics provider Wasel, now a subsidiary of the demolition specialist Hagedorn Group, has bought a host of Liebherr cranes including two large crawler cranes: an LR 1700-1.0 and an LR 11000.

The order also includes LTM 1750-9.1, LTC 1050-3.1E, and an LRT 1130-2.1, in addition to other Liebherr machines. 

The two crawler cranes are already the second of their type in Wasel's fleet. "Homogeneity in operator application and workshop operation, as well as ensuring trouble-free and efficient use by the customer, are really important to us," says managing director Matthias Wasel, who manages the business with his brother Thomas. "With the replacement and expansion investments we want to contribute to the ongoing modernisation of the equipment fleet taking into account sustainability aspects with regard to emissions standards."

"Wind energy is a crucial component of Germany's energy transition strategy,” adds Thomas Wasel. “Thousands of new high-capacity wind turbines must be erected and disused, smaller turbines must be dismantled." The company says the two new crawlers, in particular, will help it in this sector as they are specially designed to meet the ever-increasing requirements of wind turbine assembly.

The annual Global Lifting Awareness Day (#GLAD2023) will take place on July 13th, 2023.

UK lifting industry organisation LEEA, plus supporting organisations – including lifting industry PR agency Bridger Howes, have established an annual Global Lifting Awareness Day (#GLAD2023). One of the aims of this awareness day is to promote increased safety, industry standards, and best practice. It also aims to raise the industry’s profile and attract new talent. 

The first Global Lifting Awareness Day took place in 2020 and it has been growing in momentum ever since. This year GLAD will take place on July 13th, 2023.  

As part of its remit relating to safety GLAD2023 is specifically looking to ensure that end users make well-informed purchasing decisions by fully understanding their legal obligations. It also looks to raise the industry’s profile with stakeholders and legislators who, LEEA says, could otherwise forget about the importance of lifting and working at height.

A primary way in which GLAD is looking to raise awareness is through social media. The awareness day provides an opportunity for anyone with an interest in lifting and working at height to contribute and share material which promotes safe and high-quality load lifting by using the hashtag #GLAD2023 on their own social media platforms. The campaign starts now and culminates on July 13th with a host of digital content.

Utilising social media also provides a way in which the impact of the campaign can be gauged. “Participation is key,” says Richard Howes, director at Bridger Howes. “Such days are only impactful when they engage an audience and present a case so strong that a community becomes ambassadors and wants to align activity and content to that cause. They’re proud to support the initiative and excited to share words, pictures and videos about how they’re doing — before, during and after the designated day.”

DGUV CRANE OPERATOR CERTIFICATION GAINED USING SIMULATOR

Operator-in-training gains DGUV approval using a CM Labs simulator.

The successful use of simulation training and testing to meet German requirements for crane operator certification was demonstrated at the Bauma trade show by Canada-based simulation specialist CM Labs Simulations.

At the show operator-in-training Patrick Schultka, who had no experience with cranes, spent eight hours over the course of four days at the show using CM Labs’ Tower Crane Simulation Training Pack on its Vortex five-screen Advantage Simulator.

With self-guided practice and one-on-one coaching from a trainer he completed a written exam, plus a 30-minute qualification test, using CM Labs’ Crane Training Pack based on the real-world CCO exam.

According to CM Labs, in September 2021, German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV – Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung) issued report FBHL-019 allowing the use of simulation systems for the qualification of heavy equipment operators. DGUV, the organisation that oversees the use of simulation for heavy equipment training in Germany, helps companies and educational institutions with a range of prevention measures and services.

Matthias Mueller, management safety engineer and owner of AST (Arbeits Sicherheit & Technik, a recognised educational institution), supervised the live certification and documented the process. AST has been using CM Labs simulators for the past two years to qualify operators in accordance with DGUV guidelines.

“Using simulation to certify crane operators offers the next level of training and development in the skilled trades,” said Lisa Barbieri, CM Labs’ VP of marketing and product management. “The requirements set by DGUV are essential to creating a unified objective standard of measure to use simulation for certification in Germany. CM Labs is positioned to provide the right solution as the industry evolves to take advantage of the benefits of simulation training in new ways.”

The DGUV report stipulates that simulated curriculum must include realistic use of the equipment, real-world scenarios to reinforce correct safe working interactions and habits, and problem-solving scenarios to establish good judgment for safe operation and avoiding near collisions and injuries.

Simulation for certification must meet five technical criteria in order to comply.

Realistic immersive display (such as curved or 5-sided case);
Acoustic feedback to reinforce audio queues common on the job site (engine, alarms, etc.);
Realistic motion system – such as 5 degrees of freedom and motion platform;
Faithful replica of a typical worksite for operator context;
Realistic high-quality simulation model – real-time simulation, vehicle behaviour, steering, vibrations, the behaviour of objects and materials, graphics, and environmental scenarios (night/day/wind gusts, etc.).
CM Labs claims it accurately replicates real-world machine and materials behaviour resulting in effective, efficient operator training. The company even claims its’ patented physics-based Smart Training Technology (STT) system actually exceeds the technical criteria for German certification.

The STT comprises proprietary and patented algorithms designed to deliver a simulation that models machines as they would react with the environment and materials in the real world, explains CM Labs.

Its precision is backed by more than 20,000 automated daily tests and ongoing research and development. The company says that by using the system trainees gain a better feel for engine transmission, crane boom, and jib bending/torquing, as well as wire rope and crane block spin and environmental factors like wind, precipitation, day and night settings.

MAMMOET STRENGTHENS POSITION IN BRAZILIAN WIND MARKET

Mammoet, the world’s largest engineered heavy lifting and transport service provider, introduced a Tadano CC 38.650 crawler crane to its fleet in Brazil in the third quarter of 2022.

The new crane will be used specifically for concrete wind tower erection, with boom lengths ranging from 105 to 129m (344 – 423ft.).

This addition will strengthen Mammoet’s position in the local wind market, which is one of the fastest growing in South America thanks to government investment.

The new generation of wind turbines now debuting in Brazil is getting larger and heavier, says Mammoet, as developers increase the use of concrete sections in hybrid towers. These concrete tower sections, which are poured on site, can be two to three times heavier than their steel counterparts.

This means crawler cranes are used more frequently for projects with concrete towers, so that the sections can be lifted and tracked across the hardstand into their final installation positions. The increase in component weight also means developers can find themselves choosing from a smaller pool of lifting equipment, as cranes in the 600t-750t capacity range are often already at work in other sectors.

The crane is currently on site to complete its first tasks at the Cajuina Wind Farm in Angicos region, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The Cajuina Wind Farm will be comprised of 55 wind turbine generators (WTGs) which will have a total capacity of 314 Megawatts.
