BMS Heavy Cranes is leading a major offshore wind project with the assembly of 106 wind turbine towers for a large offshore wind farm near Borkum. The project, which began in December 2023 and is set to finish by the end of 2024, relies heavily on Liebherr’s LR-series crawler cranes, a critical component of BMS’s operations in Esbjerg, Denmark’s central hub for offshore wind energy.

For the challenging task, BMS has deployed three Liebherr LR 11350 crawler cranes in SDB configuration, each equipped with a 132-meter main boom and 42-meter derrick. These high-performance machines are used to assemble tower sections into 110-meter tall towers, which are then fully wired and transferred onto special vessels for transport to the wind farm site.

Evolving Offshore Wind Power

The offshore wind sector has seen dramatic growth over the years. While early wind turbines had a 50 kW output and 15-meter rotors, modern turbines now deliver up to 11 MW with rotor diameters of 200 meters. This exponential growth has placed high demands on lifting equipment, with Liebherr cranes at the forefront of these developments.

In Esbjerg, BMS’s LR 11350 cranes work with precision on carefully leveled tracks to ensure the center of gravity is correctly positioned. To handle the complex lifts, the cranes are ballasted with 400 tonnes on the superstructure, and up to an additional 260 tonnes of suspended ballast for heavier loads. Liebherr’s LICCON system provides real-time data on crane stability, optimizing safety and efficiency during each lift.

Safety and Precision

Safety is a top priority for BMS, with operations designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 13.5 m/s. “We monitor wind conditions using the LICCON system and our own app, ensuring that lifts only occur when conditions are optimal,” explains Lars Thomsen, Onsite Project Manager at BMS. Crane Supervisor Michael Leonard emphasizes the importance of close coordination with other stakeholders: “We work closely with the installation company and wind turbine manufacturers to ensure that no tower element begins swinging, especially when handling 100-tonne pieces.”

Around-the-Clock Operations

BMS’s operations run 24 hours a day with two shifts of 12 hours each. A dedicated team of crane operators conducts daily checks to ensure optimal performance, while cameras mounted on the hook, boom, and ropes provide operators with a clear view, even in challenging conditions such as fog, rain, or darkness.

As wind turbines continue to grow in size and weight, the current capabilities of the LR 11350 will soon reach their limits. BMS and Liebherr are in ongoing discussions to develop new solutions that will meet the future demands of offshore wind projects.

Despite these challenges, Thomsen is confident in the quality of Liebherr equipment: “Liebherr’s cranes, especially the fast assembly and disassembly features, along with the excellent LICCON control system, make our work much easier.”

The Aguado Group has added a Liebherr LR 1700-1.0W crawler crane to its fleet. The Spanish company is modernizing its equipment pool to meet growing customer demands, particularly in the wind power sector. This 700-tonne lattice boom crane, designed for versatile applications and efficient transport, offers exceptional load capacities and advanced variable boom systems.

The LR 1700-1.0W is Aguado’s most powerful narrow-track crane, specifically tailored for wind power projects. “This crane is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, the LR 1600/2-W, and is incredibly versatile and easy to transport,” said Mario Aguado, Head of Aguado Group’s wind power division.

The crane’s first assignment highlights its potential: assembling eight wind turbines at the Cascante wind farm in Navarra. With hub heights of 119 meters, the job showcases the crane’s precision and efficiency, though it’s capable of handling even greater challenges, including turbines with hub heights of up to 170 meters.

The LR 1700-1.0W boasts numerous upgrades, including a more powerful base machine and 3.5-meter-wide H-lattice type sections for enhanced lateral stability. It also features an optional luffing jib, absent in earlier models, providing greater flexibility in various applications.

Mario Aguado emphasized the crane’s strategic importance: “This investment is part of our fleet renewal plan, focusing on modern crane technology to meet customer needs. Having the LR 1700-1.0W in our fleet alongside other Liebherr models like the LG 1750 and LR 11000 demonstrates our commitment to providing top-tier solutions.”

Over half of Aguado Group’s machinery originates from Liebherr, underscoring a long-standing partnership. Two 300-ton Link-Belt 348 Series 2 lattice crawler cranes played a pivotal role in the construction of a $170 million, 650,000-square-foot mixed-use development at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Davis Erecting Inc., based in Greenville, utilized these cranes for the installation of precast concrete panels on the 11-story structure, which includes student housing, commercial space, and parking facilities.

Equipped with 240 feet of luffing boom and 120 feet of luffing jib, the cranes demonstrated their reliability and capacity by tandem-lifting concrete panels weighing up to 50,000 pounds. The project highlighted the machines’ features, including self-assembling counterweight systems and a flexible boom top section that transitions between conventional and luffing configurations, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Irish construction giant John Paul Construction marks two major milestones this year: its 75th anniversary and 50 years of partnership with crane manufacturer Liebherr. To commemorate the occasion, senior representatives from Liebherr-International AG and Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH traveled to Dublin to join the celebrations.
Key highlights of the event included the presentation of a bespoke painting by a local Biberach artist to John Paul Construction executives and a site visit to one of Dublin’s prominent construction projects, the Harcourt Square office complex.

John Paul Construction and Liebherr continue their collaboration on two major developments in Dublin: the Harcourt Square office complex and the Castleforbes apartment buildings in the Docklands.

At Harcourt Square, five Liebherr tower cranes, including three 340 EC-B 12s, a 202 EC-B 10 Litronic, and a 200 EC-H 10 Litronic, are supporting the construction of a major office development. The cranes are working at hook heights ranging from 57 to 82.2 meters, with innovative solutions like internal climbing cranes installed in lift shafts to avoid structural collisions. Liebherr’s Tower Crane Solutions team played a crucial role in planning and calculating foundation loads and tower deformations for this challenging project.

Meanwhile, in the Dublin Docklands, seven Liebherr cranes are at work on the Castleforbes apartment complex, a project comprising eight buildings with 702 residential units. Among these cranes is Ireland’s first fibre rope crane, the 370 EC-B 16 Fibre, known for its lightweight design and increased load capacity. Other Liebherr models from John Paul Construction’s fleet and additional cranes hired from Lewis Tower Cranes are also being used to construct this landmark development, which will feature an 18-story residential tower, alongside amenities like a restaurant, café, and childcare center.

Following the rebranding of Wolffkran Norge AS as a subsidiary of Wolffkran Holding AG, the company is now heavily involved in two major construction projects in Oslo. Five WOLFF 7534.16 Clear cranes are playing a critical role in the redevelopment of Oslo’s Ulven district, a former industrial area, in partnership with Norway’s largest construction firm, Veidekke.

Two WOLFF cranes have been integral in constructing the “Ulvenkroken” residential complex, a 180-unit building. Each crane, with a lifting capacity of 16.5 tons and a jib radius of 60 meters, was used to transport heavy prefab components and to pour elevator shafts continuously using slipform technology, achieving an impressive lifting speed of 185 meters per minute.

The project leveraged WOLFF’s two-part foundation anchor system, a sustainable solution allowing the reuse of high-quality parts. Operational challenges, including the proximity of nearby cranes and coordination with adjacent railways and roads, were managed effectively through synchronized anti-collision systems.

In a parallel project, three WOLFF cranes are constructing Veidekke’s new headquarters, a sustainable building located near Ulvenkroken, which received a visit from Crown Prince Haakon during construction. The Oslo projects mark the first collaboration between Veidekke and Wolffkran Norge AS. “Wolffkran supported us through every phase, from planning to night operations,” notes Morten Opstad Aarseth, Veidekke’s Project Manager, calling it a “successful debut.”

MSG Krandienst GmbH, a company operating in the Franco-German border region near Strasbourg, is bolstering its fleet of heavy-duty cranes with the addition of two modern Liebherr models. Having received the LTM 1300-6.3 mobile crane a few days ago, the company will expand further in February with the delivery of an LTM 1650-8.1 equipped with two telescopic boom variants of 54 and 80 meters in length. With its signature blue cranes, MSG is positioned to meet the complex needs of infrastructure and energy projects across the Alsace-Baden region.

Björn Jatz, Managing Director of MSG, personally attended the crane handover in Ehingen, marking the acquisition of the 300-tonne mobile crane. “The 90-meter telescopic boom, which can be transported on roads with a 12-tonne axle load, was a key factor in our decision to purchase this crane,” said Jatz. “The addition of this crane completes our fleet of Liebherr large cranes, joining the LTM 1750-9.1 and LTM 1450-8.1, as well as three units of the LTM 1650-8.1. A significant benefit is the compatibility of lattice sections across these models, which we can also use on our new LTM 1300-6.3.”

The new 6-axle LTM 1300-6.3 offers advanced technical features, including VarioBase Plus and VarioBallast, as well as auto-ballast and wind-speed load charts, which enhance its utility in wind turbine maintenance. The crane also boasts versatile lattice jib configurations, ranging from an 11.5 to 20-meter double folding jib to a powerful 39-meter lattice-type fixed jib, and even a hydraulically adjustable 43-meter lattice jib. These features enable the crane to reach lifting heights up to 120 meters.

MSG Krandienst’s expanded fleet will support key infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the Rhine Valley railway line and increased maintenance on wind turbines in the Black Forest. These projects have ensured strong demand for the company, which operates 150 employees across locations in Freiburg, Kehl, and Strasbourg. MSG also anticipates high demand for crane services in the maintenance and repowering of older wind turbines, underscoring the value of their fleet’s large lifting capacities.

The company recently deployed one of its two LTM 1650-8.1 cranes to replace parts on an Enercon E-66 wind turbine at an elevation of 1,100 meters in the Black Forest. In a single day, the mobile crane completed the job, lifting the entire blade assembly in a dual-hook operation, replacing the generator, and reassembling it. For this complex task, the crane utilized Y-guying, a six-meter boom extension, and a small auxiliary jib. The heaviest lift involved 48 tonnes at a 25-meter radius, supported by 155 tonnes of counterweights.

As part of its fleet expansion, MSG will welcome a third LTM 1650-8.1 in early 2025 and an LTM 1230-5.1 in February, growing its collection of Liebherr mobile cranes to 55 units. With these additions, MSG Krandienst is ready to take on the demanding crane requirements of upcoming infrastructure and energy projects in the Rhine Valley and beyond.

The Scholpp team from Mannheim recently carried out a challenging lift, marking the first-ever use of their Tadano AC 7.450-1 crane with an 81-meter luffing jib. 

The job involved lifting a 2.5-tonne cooling unit to the roof of the Victoria Tower, near Mannheim Hauptbahnhof, at a height of nearly 100 meters. Given the constraints of the densely built area, the team operated with a wide radius of 70 meters, requiring a hook height of 125 meters. To ensure success, Scholpp enlisted Tadano service technician Norbert Kraus for on-site support.

Florian Schmid, Scholpp Mannheim Branch Manager, emphasized the importance of Kraus’s expertise, saying it greatly reduced stress during such a complex lift. The team carefully navigated the risk posed by nearby tram lines, using the crane’s range limiter and coordinating with local train dispatchers.

“The decision to rely on Tadano’s assistance was the right one,” Schmid noted. “Their professionalism and expertise were crucial.” Jan Meißner, Scholpp’s Managing Director of Operations, added, “We didn’t want to take risks with our first use of the full luffing jib. Tadano delivered both reliable equipment and exceptional service.”

The collaboration focuses on heavy transport, lifting, and handling services over the next year.

With a cargo capacity of 25 million tons annually, Krakatau International Port is a critical logistics hub in Indonesia, integrated with upstream facilities that enhance its operational efficiency. The strategic project comes as part of a series of initiatives launched by PT Krakatau Bandar Samudera (KBS), a subsidiary of Krakatau Steel Group. The company aims to strengthen its position as a leading port operator, with over 30 years of experience in the field.

Sarens began work in September, transporting equipment to the site via flatbeds and assembling the SCC1500 (150-ton) crawler crane. The project required meticulous preparation, including stability assessments of the port area and rigorous load tests to ensure safety. The SCC1500, chosen for its ability to handle oversized cargo and navigate the port’s challenges, features a 57-meter boom capable of tackling various lifting tasks.

One of the first major lifts involved hoisting a 23-meter-long, 18-ton wheel loader onto a barge. Given the wheel loader’s size and the windy conditions at the port, Sarens implemented strict safety protocols to protect both the crew and equipment. The lift was executed smoothly, with the crane slewing the object into place beside the barge.

This project is set to significantly enhance the port’s operational capacity and support its growth as a competitive business hub. Located at the tip of the Sunda Strait in Banten Province, the Krakatau International Port is strategically positioned along key maritime routes, including the 21st-century maritime silk road and the Archipelagic Sea Lane of Indonesia (ALKI).

Sarens, with more than 60 years of experience, is no stranger to major international projects. In recent years, the company has contributed to critical infrastructure developments such as Thailand’s Clean Fuel Project, South Korea’s S-Oil plant expansion, and Peru’s Petroperu refinery construction. Two Tadano AC 5.220-1 all-terrain cranes collaborated to execute a challenging tandem lift, loading a 120-tonne boiler onto a semi-trailer for transport. The task was handled by Frankfurt-based Auto-Service Safar GmbH in partnership with Hack Schwerlast GmbH from Neuwied. Both companies brought their Tadano AC 5.220-1 cranes to the site at Griesheim industrial park, where the decommissioned boiler awaited its journey to Turkey.

The boiler, measuring 11.60 meters in length and 3.50 meters in diameter, posed a logistical challenge. The only viable solution was to employ a tandem lift, with each crane handling half of the 122-tonne gross weight, including slinging gear. The plan was to hoist the massive load to a sufficient height for a lowbed trailer to be maneuvered underneath, after which the boiler would be gently lowered onto the trailer for transportation.

“To execute this lift, we meticulously positioned both cranes, considering a required radius of 13 meters, and rigged the load carefully,” explained Detlef Precht, Heavy Load and Crane Manager at Auto-Service Safar GmbH, who operated one of the Tadano cranes. “Each crane handled 61 tonnes, and the precision of the tandem lift was crucial to ensure a smooth operation.”

With a counterweight of 71 tonnes and a boom length of 21.56 meters, the two Tadano cranes lifted the boiler to a height of one meter, working in perfect harmony. Max Goll’s team then moved a 12-axle semi-trailer beneath the suspended load, and the cranes slowly lowered the boiler with pinpoint accuracy.

“Thanks to careful planning and flawless teamwork, everything went according to plan,” said Precht. He emphasized the importance of direct sightlines, seamless communication between operators, and the reliability of experienced signalpeople, all critical for the success of the lift.

Precht also credited the cranes themselves for the successful operation. “The Tadano AC 5.220-1 is an incredibly powerful machine. It consistently provides the performance we need, especially when reserves are required. This lift once again demonstrated its reliability,” he said.

Hendrik Eich, owner of Auto-Service Safar GmbH, echoed Precht’s praise. “The AC 5.220-1 has been a cornerstone of our fleet for years. We are extremely satisfied with its performance and value our long-standing partnership with Tadano. I’d also like to thank Hack Schwerlast GmbH for their excellent cooperation on this project,” Eich said.

Toggenburger + Co AG, a Swiss crane service provider, successfully used the Tadano CC 38.650-1 lattice boom crawler crane to lift and place a new 230-tonne Aabachbrücke bridge in Niederuster, near Zurich. The project involved not only placing the new bridge but also removing parts of the old, demolished bridge, with sections weighing up to 150 tonnes.

Due to the sensitivity of the new parallelogram-shaped bridge, Toggenburger employed strand jacks to carefully control load distribution and avoid damage to the structure. Transporting the crane to the site required 20 trucks, and a team of four assembly technicians and an AC 140 assist crane assembled it in just two and a half days, configuring it with a 66-meter boom and 540 tonnes of counterweight.

The complex lift required detailed planning, including extending Bongossi mats to allow the crane to maneuver into position. The CC 38.650-1 lifted the bridge’s gross weight of 250 tonnes, including slinging gear, over trees at a 31-meter radius before setting it precisely on its supports. The strand jacks were also crucial in adjusting line lengths during the lift, ensuring the bridge was positioned at the correct angle.

With six Toggenburger employees managing the operation, including two crane operators, the lift was completed safely, precisely, and on time. The project highlighted the capabilities of the Tadano CC 38.650-1 and the expertise of the Toggenburger team in handling complex lifts.

The SK597-AT4 eLift has a seven-ton maximum capacity, a 48-meter jib, and a compact chassis, with a maximum lifting height of 58.1 meters when the jib is luffed to 45 degrees. The SK1265-AT6 eLift, meanwhile, boasts a 10-ton maximum capacity and a 60-meter jib, offering a 1,700-kilogram jib tip capacity at a 37-meter horizontal jib height. This model can reach a maximum lift height of 66 meters when the jib is luffed to 30 degrees.

Sarens continues to invest in renewable energy projects worldwide, having installed over 1,000 wind turbines and formed strategic partnerships in the offshore wind and nuclear sectors. Sarens has aligned with organizations like the World Forum Offshore Wind for floating offshore wind (FLOW) projects, PSG Marine and Logistics Ltd. for offshore wind in Scotland, and Tugdock for floating wind solutions. Kranverleih Haslach GmbH has successfully completed the installation of several prestressed concrete trusses, each weighing just under 100 tonnes, for the construction of a new hall at the Getzner textile factory. This complex operation, executed in the Austrian town of Bludenz, required months of meticulous planning due to the challenging conditions of the site, including a limited footprint and a full cellar running underneath the hall.

The task involved installing ten massive concrete trusses for the hall’s roof, each weighing 98 tonnes and spanning 47.3 meters. The presence of the cellar posed a significant obstacle, as the hall floor’s support load was limited. Despite these constraints, factory operations at Getzner had to continue uninterrupted.

Tobias Haslach, owner of Kranverleih Haslach GmbH, reflected on the intricate planning and detailed calculations necessary to ensure the project’s success. “We collaborated closely with other companies involved, stabilizing the cellar ceiling with ceiling supports to achieve the required strength. This allowed our LTM 1300-6.3 crane to work on the site,” said Haslach.

The team utilized a 6-axle mobile crane, the Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3, to lift the heavy trusses. To handle the complex task of unloading the trusses onto the hall floor, a second crane, the LTM 1230-5.1, was employed. Positioned outside the hall on a specially filled embankment, the 5-axle crane worked in tandem with the LTM 1300-6.3.

The restricted space and positioning behind a concrete wall meant that communication between the teams was conducted via radiotelephony. “Both cranes worked at their maximum capacity during the tandem hoist, lifting 51 tonnes each with radii of 13 and 15 meters, respectively,” Haslach added. Two trusses were successfully installed each day, with each requiring a special permit for night transport due to their sheer size and weight.

After each installation, the cranes, along with their ballast and equipment, were repositioned for the next lift. “The collaboration on-site was exceptional,” Haslach noted, praising the coordination among all involved. Despite the challenges, operations at the Getzner factory proceeded without disruption, much to the satisfaction of the crane operators and the rest of the team.

Selected for their high lifting capacity and adaptability, the Liebherr 710 HC-L crane can lift up to 64 tonnes with a 55-meter radius, making it ideal for the tallest sections of the basilica. The 125 HC-L crane will assist with the chapel and cloisters. Their design minimizes the impact on surrounding structures, essential for the densely built area.

One of the main challenges was erecting the 710 HC-L crane at a height of 54 meters, which will be extended to 130 meters and anchored to the Tower of Jesus Christ. A custom bracing structure was developed to support this phase. The cranes’ assembly required meticulous planning due to stringent safety standards and the crowded, tourist-heavy location.

Rhenus Port Logistics is investing in a new transshipment terminal at the Rhine port of Basel-Kleinhünigen, Switzerland. Emil Egger AG is handling the logistics for the prefabricated concrete elements, using four Liebherr cranes to maximize efficiency during construction.

The new Terminal 4 spans 7,300 square meters and consists of five hall sections. Equipped with modern technology, the trimodal terminal will feature five bridge cranes with a lifting capacity of up to 32 tonnes, excavators, forklifts, a rail intake hopper for bulk goods, and advanced scales for road, rail, and water transport.

To manage the prefabricated concrete supports, Emil Egger AG deployed two mobile cranes—an LTM 1350-6.1 and an LTM 1650-8.1—and two crawler cranes—an LR 1250 and an LR 11000. The LR 1250 handled the formwork and transport of 64-tonne diagonal supports, loading them onto low-loaders for internal site transport. The LR 11000, Switzerland’s largest crawler crane, installed crane track supports and external bone girders, moving 211-tonne supports over a 59-metre radius and 265-tonne supports over 45 metres with a 72-metre boom and V-frame configuration.

Michael Egger from Emil Egger highlighted the importance of the V-frame, which has become indispensable for their operations. The VarioTray was also crucial, allowing the crane to lift, move, and shift supports with over 400 tonnes of suspended ballast.

The 1,000-tonne crawler crane extended wall panels made from cast-in-place concrete to the final height of the hall and installed 14 bone girders, each involving a 140-tonne lift at a 44-metre radius. The LTM 1350-6.1 lifted and tilted the diagonal supports into place, while the LTM 1650-8.1 closed the gaps in the concrete wall panels and installed the last six bone girders, lifting 90-tonne beams at a 14-metre radius.

The new terminal will significantly enhance cargo handling and transportation capabilities in the region, demonstrating Rhenus Port Logistics’ commitment to advancing port infrastructure.

HS2 (High Speed Two), the UK’s flagship transportation project, connects the West Midlands and London via a 140-mile high-speed rail line. The underground sections of this route are created using massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), each 170 meters long and weighing 2,000 tonnes. These machines excavate soil and install tunnel walls, consisting of thousands of parts, many of which are extremely heavy and require careful handling during both assembly and dismantling.

Align JV, a joint venture of Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick, and Sir Robert McAlpine, is responsible for the Central 1 section of HS2 Phase 1, including a 16km twin-bore tunnel through the Chiltern Hills. Mammoet supported Align JV in assembling two TBMs at the South Portal site and later dismantling them at the North Portal near Great Missenden.

Mammoet’s Senior Commercial Manager, Simon Crawley, assessed the North Portal site’s limitations and space constraints, determining that a 400t crawler crane would be sufficient for dismantling, as opposed to the 600t crane used for assembly. Using Move3D software, Crawley, Project Manager Rhys Burley, and Project Engineer Antreas Michail created a detailed visualization and animation of the dismantling process, convincing Align JV of the feasibility of using a smaller, more cost-effective crane.

Two TBMs, responsible for the south and northbound tunnels, required dismantling. A 400t capacity CC2400 crawler crane removed the largest components, with an LR1300SX crane assisting in lifting the heaviest cutter head. Components were then transported using Mammoet Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) to laydown areas, where additional cranes offloaded them for further dismantling. The cutter head’s unknown center of gravity and the TBM’s exit angle posed challenges, which were addressed by using air hoists for safer and more efficient component leveling.

Mammoet’s comprehensive approach, combining skilled personnel, specialized equipment, and innovative thinking, ensured a safe and efficient outcome. By making small adjustments to the project scope and proving their benefits through visualization, Mammoet delivered a successful dismantling operation, showcasing their capability to adapt and meet the complex demands of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Building on the legacy of the MD 1100, the MDLT 1109 features significant updates, including a 2.45 m K850 mast that offers a smaller footprint for easier transport and quicker assembly. Its low-top design, less than 6 m above the jib, enables seamless operation alongside other cranes on a job site. The crane is also available with two different lifting hoists: the 150 HPLTM 100 or the 270 LVF GH Optima.

Modern features of the MDLT 1109 include P+ load curves for higher hoisting capacities, the Potain CCS (Crane Control System), and the new Potain CONNECT telematics system for remote access to crane data, enhancing performance and durability. An optional Potain Cab-IN internal mast lift is available for operators.

The storm traps, which are infiltration and detention systems, work alongside jellyfish filters designed to hold and slowly release water, capturing debris like plastic bottles. These underground tanks store initial runoff, which carries street pollutants, and regulate its flow to treatment plants, preventing overflow and untreated discharges into watercourses.

Sarens, one of the leader’s in heavy lifting and crane rental services, executed the project by lifting and installing 100 pieces over four days. Each module of the stormwater storage gallery weighed 15,000 pounds and covered 40 feet of the trench. Sarens used an AT 160 crane as the main boom for optimal productivity and minimal mobilization.

Neil Docherty, Sarens Project Manager, explained that water first passes through filters to remove solid contaminants before reaching the tanks. The water is then gradually sent to purification stations, reducing river contamination and flood risk. This project marks a significant step towards sustainability.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Sarens completed the project efficiently, providing relief to the community by mitigating future flood risks. Sarens’ experience in the Canadian construction industry includes projects like the Union Station renovation, where they lifted and installed iron girders for the flying garden, and the Lafarge cement factory refurbishment, which boosted annual cement production.

The LTM 1650-8.1 crane, assembled in a T3YV2EN configuration with 150 tonnes of ballast and a 77-meter luffing jib, began its work at 23:00 on a Friday evening.

Challenges arose due to the presence of an underground railway line beneath the crane site, limiting support pressure to two tonnes per square meter. A combination of steel plates and bongossi timbers was employed to distribute the load effectively.

The lifting operation commenced at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the crane extending its boom to 51 meters to reach the required height of 120 meters. The task involved removing old chillers from the 95-meter-high Kastor tower and installing new units to modernize the building’s air conditioning system, completed in 1997.

Despite the complexity, all work had to be finished by Sunday to reopen the road for Monday morning traffic. The logistical feat required precise coordination and swift execution, marking a successful modernization endeavor for the iconic Frankfurt skyline.

The damaged Hammesberg Wupper Bridge, constructed in 1965, is undergoing replacement due to severe damage. The bridge, closed to vehicles over 30 tonnes, faced a speed limit of 30 km/h. To minimize closure time, a prefabricated parts construction method was chosen.

Two Liebherr mobile cranes, an LTM 1650-8.1 from Autokrane Schares GmbH and an LTM 1450-8.1 from Dornseiff Autokrane & Schwertransporte GmbH, performed tandem lifts to place eight 85-tonne precast concrete elements onto the abutments over the Wupper.

The unique tandem lift involved the LTM 1650-8.1 lifting parts from one side of the river, reaching its lifting capacity limit. The LTM 1450-8.1, positioned on the other side, took over, with technicians in a safety cage attaching the hook to a special triangular crossbeam. Schares project manager Eric Reichmann highlighted the necessity of this approach, stating that even an 800-tonne crane wouldn’t have sufficed due to space constraints.

The tandem lift, utilizing a 160-tonne triangular crossbeam and an additional mobile crane, successfully installed eight 32-meter-long reinforced concrete girders across the Wupper in two days. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic in the spring.

The German Railway recently completed the renewal of a bridge over the Riß in Biberach, employing a Liebherr crawler crane LR 1750/2 from RIGA MAINZ, a crane and heavy haulage company. The project involved lifting out old bridge sections and placing new 285-ton bridge parts on freshly constructed abutments.

The old bridge, dating back to 1912, spanned the Riß, a tributary of the Danube in Upper Swabia, with abutments three decades older. Originally, the plan was to construct a new bridge west of the old one, but environmental concerns led to a change. Instead, the new bridge was built to the east on a meadow using prefabricated parts, lifted into place by the 750-tonne crawler crane LR 1750/2.

Salcef Bau GmbH awarded the contract to RIGA MAINZ, and the project faced tight space conditions. Owner Uwe Langer noted, “The LR 1750/2 was the optimum crane size for this job. It is compact and yet powerful.” Two large drilling machines created twelve bored piles for the new abutments. After lifting, the bridge sections were cast with concrete into the abutments, resulting in a ten-meter-wide and twenty-meter-long structure.

Despite the challenges, the assembly and crawler crane teams completed the reconstruction efficiently. The railway line was closed for only five days during the project, showcasing the precision and effectiveness of the LR 1750/2. The entire operation, including setup, dismantling, and ten days of operation, took just over two weeks, with the LR 1750/2 proving to be the ideal choice for the complex task.

The tower crane, equipped with a hook height of 16.5 meters and a jib length of 42.5 meters, advances with the bridge’s construction, staying at roughly the same height as the bridge’s top edge. The construction site’s small footprint aligns with the nature conservation area’s requirements.

Supplied by Hüffermann Krandienst GmbH and contracted by Implenia, the crane is a vital component of a bridge construction project that involves assembling segments on land and pushing them across the Elbe to respective support piers. With 9,000 tonnes of steel, the bridge surpasses the Eiffel Tower’s weight, comprising 20-meter-long components manufactured in Saxony.

Part of the A 14 motorway expansion, the bridge, set to open in 2026, will be the longest of the entire northward extension. However, the full motorway section is expected to be open to traffic by 2028, making it Germany’s largest ongoing motorway construction project.

Climbing off internally, the crane has scaled the 36-meter tower height over the past two years, reaching its final height of 167 meters above ground level. As the LR273 approaches the concluding stages of the project, the anticipated dismantling date is set for December 2023.

Patullo highlighted the crane’s ability to switch promptly from two falls to four falls and reverse, facilitating the lifting of large equipment without downtime. With an 86kW hoisting gear, the LR273 achieves a maximum lifting speed of 204 meters per minute and a drum capacity of 980 meters, ensuring excellent lifting performance and meeting project deadlines.

Avenue Building Corporation’s fleet includes seven Raimondi cranes deployed across various Toronto sites, and the success of the LR273 has prompted plans for two additional units in another key development in the city. Once completed, the 55 Charles Residences, a MOD Developments project, will contribute 665 residential units to central Toronto’s dynamic and ever-evolving skyline.

Equipped with a 90-meter boom and special “WindSpeed Load Charts,” the mobile crane can operate in higher permissible wind speeds. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the crane efficiently replaced the twelve-tonne gearbox in the turbine’s nacelle, situated at a height of approximately 65 meters.

Crane operator Robert Fuhrmann praised the crane’s adaptability, stating, “As the day went on, the gusts got stronger, and I switched straight to the wind chart.” The crane’s advanced features allowed Fuhrmann to configure load charts that permitted work in wind speeds of up to 13.4 meters per second, well beyond the standard range.

The Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3’s ability to handle windy conditions is crucial for wind turbine operations, where unpredictable weather can disrupt schedules. Fuhrmann successfully navigated the challenging journey to the site, overcoming a six-kilometer gravel track with tight serpentine bends and gradients exceeding ten percent.
With its advanced ECOmode control system, the crane minimizes fuel consumption and noise emissions, automatically disengaging the pump drive when power is not required. The crane’s versatility extends to other applications, including lifting heavy transformer houses and construction crane assembly.

Felbermayr, the company operating the crane, has a vast portfolio covering heavy haulage, large transport, and infrastructure projects. The Liebherr LTM 1300-6.3, in service for around five months, has already proven its capabilities on various wind farm projects in Austria.

Despite the challenging conditions, precise teamwork and the crane’s advanced features ensured the successful replacement of the gearbox. The use of on-site power significantly reduces operating costs, amounting to only 10 percent of the expenses associated with diesel engine use over a year.

ATS Cranes, a branch of Steil Kranarbeiten in Trier, together with their partners, accomplished a significant feat in late September 2023. They were awarded the contract to widen several bridges on the bustling A3 motorway that connects Luxembourg and France. The Pont Berchem bridge was one of these structures.

The A3 expansion to six lanes, including a hard shoulder and an exit lane to the Aire de Berchem Quest service area, necessitated the creation of a new bridge. This remarkable bridge spans 85 meters without any supporting pillars, presenting a challenging task for Frederic Kleinhans, Operations Manager at ATS Cranes in Frisange, Luxembourg.

Using their Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 and LTM 1300-6.3 cranes, ATS Cranes had to rotate five girders weighing between 87 and 92 tonnes by 90 degrees before installing them onto the abutments. The meticulous planning of the crane positions was crucial, as the 90-degree rotation and placement had to be executed in a single operation.

The relatively new LTM 1650-8.1 crane, equipped with a 45.3-meter boom, a 17.5-meter radius, and 180 tonnes of ballast, played a central role in the nighttime construction. The LTM 1300-6.3 crane, ballasted with 94 tonnes, had a 29.4-meter boom and a 15.3-meter radius. Both cranes were operated by experienced professionals who demonstrated exceptional precision during the challenging slewing process, with the massive steel girders passing just centimeters from the cranes’ luffing cylinders.

The entire operation took place over a weekend, benefiting from good weather and minimal wind conditions. Tandem lifts are not only impressive but also complex to plan. ATS/Steil used their CAD software to calculate and visualize various set-up configurations and boom combinations based on factors like footprint, overhangs, payloads, start and end radius, and ground pressure. This meticulous planning ensured that the construction site setup was precisely executed without on-site measurements during the night.

Frederic Kleinhans commended his highly motivated and well-trained team for their dedication and expertise, highlighting their ability to complete the demanding task with the utmost precision. The last girder was successfully placed into position at 3 am on a Sunday morning.

The electric LTC 1050-3.1 offers a compelling blend of environmental friendliness, customer benefits, and efficiency. On the road, it is powered by a low-emission combustion engine meeting exhaust emission stage 5 standards, providing 243 kW (326 hp). This engine can be fueled with hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to pure diesel.

During crane operations, operators can choose between the combustion engine and the electric motor based on the specific operating conditions. The newly developed electric motor offers 72 kW, delivering nearly the same performance as the 6-cylinder engine. The electric model includes the electric motor, a transfer case, and necessary control technology. This intelligent yet straightforward solution facilitates seamless transitions between diesel-hydraulic and electro-hydraulic drive. While full performance requires 125 amps of site power, practical operation is possible with 63 amps. Additionally, the crane can be operated using an external “battery pack,” like the Liebherr energy storage system Liduro Power Port (LPO), if the construction site lacks the necessary electrical infrastructure.

In a complex operation carried out in Adana, Turkey, last year, Sarens demonstrated their expertise in heavy lifting. The task was performed on behalf of their client, Gemont Endüstri Tesisleri İmalat ve Montaj A.S., and the project owner, SASAPolyester San. Tic. A.S., and it involved a range of specialized equipment as CC8800-1 with a boom booster, LR1750, CC2400-1, small mobile cranes and special spreaders.

One of the key challenges was that the project site wasn’t suitable for cranes larger than the CC8800. In response, Sarens devised an engineering solution that utilized the CC8800-1 with a boom booster.

In total, Sarens managed to lift 41 heavy units, including impressive components such as a 700-tonne, 22-meter oxidation reactor, a 700-tonne, 52-meter rectification column, and five 350-tonne, 52-meter silos. Installing each silo involved the CC8800-1 crawling approximately 100 meters before lifting in conjunction with the LR1750.

The equipment was transported from Germany in just eight days, although customs clearance added another 26 days to the timeline. Subsequently, it was efficiently moved to the job site within three days and assembled in a mere 18 days. Transporting the primary crane necessitated the use of 100 trailers between the port and the job site, while 12 jib sections were delivered via 12 trailers from Croatia.

Despite facing challenges such as a devastating earthquake, strong winds, and heavy rainfall that caused work delays, the Sarens team successfully completed the demanding lifts. Their efforts were recognized when the client’s project manager personally thanked the on-site team, which included two project managers, two site supervisors, eight to ten crane operators, and one engineer.

Both LRH174 cranes were placed on a ballast base with a final configuration featuring a 36-meter mast and a maximum radius of 50 meters. These 10-ton luffers boast a tip load capacity of 2.25 tons and can achieve a maximum lifting speed of 190 meters per minute, thanks to their 45kW hoisting gear with a drum capacity of 600 meters.

To minimize disruptions at the busy government site, the decision to mount the cranes on a ballast base was crucial. This approach eliminated the need for extensive excavation work required for permanent footings. Additionally, the LRH174’s hydraulic luffing system operates quietly compared to traditional mechanical luffers.

The LRH174 is designed for ease of installation, contributing to efficient onsite operations. Ground-level assembly of the crane’s jib, hoisting winch, and rope reeving streamlines the process. Notably, the LRH174’s compact 10-meter out-of-service boom is ideal for narrow jobsites, and its hydraulic system ensures smooth and swift luffing movement.

Michael Clark noted the increasing demand for luffing jib cranes like the LRH174, particularly in projects with oversailing issues where the 10-meter out-of-service radius proves invaluable during decision-making.

Raimondi Middle East has recently deployed four MRT111 flat-top tower cranes in Jumeirah Village Circle, one of Dubai’s rapidly expanding master communities. These flat-top cranes were erected in May 2023 to contribute to the construction of a five-storey residential building.

Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Middle East, highlighted the substantial growth in the UAE’s construction industry, encompassing infrastructure, residential, and mixed-use development projects. The deployment of these four flat-top cranes marks Raimondi’s continued involvement in key projects across the country, with more than 30 machines already in operation, and plans for further expansion in the coming months.

The MRT111 cranes were installed onsite in their final configurations, offering heights ranging from 33m to 48m and jib lengths of 42m and 36m. All of these machines are equipped with Raimondi Deluxe R16 crane cabins and are 8t flat-tops with a hoist gear capacity of 30kW, capable of lifting at a maximum speed of 100 m/min.

Considering the project’s delivery schedule by contractor TownX Development, the MRT111 model was deemed well-suited for the jobsite, delivering excellent performance in terms of load capacity and hoisting speed. A comprehensive site study was conducted to determine the optimal crane positioning and installation, particularly since the site is situated between a primary school and occupied residential buildings. Planning also factored in onsite logistics during commissioning.

The MRT111 continues to be one of the best-selling crane models in the MENA region. Over the past three years, Raimondi Cranes has expanded its presence in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with a notable number of the manufacturer’s models installed in Qatar and the UAE. Wael Hasan expressed confidence in closing 2023 with approximately 20 additional cranes onsite in the region.

Wind energy in Switzerland accounts for a small fraction of the nation’s energy mix, contributing just 0.25% of the total electricity production, primarily dominated by hydropower. However, recent developments in the Jura mountain range in the canton of Vaud, near the French border, have added six new wind turbines to the landscape. These turbines, boasting a combined output of 13.8 MWh, were installed during the summer months using cutting-edge equipment from Liebherr, a renowned crane manufacturer.

Emil Egger AG, a crane company, deployed its two most powerful hoisting units, the LR 1700-1.0 and the LR 11000, to navigate the challenging terrain at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. The heaviest lifts occurred during the installation of the generators, with the LR 11000 handling a massive 71-tonne load, including the hook block and slings. To tackle the towering assembly heights of around 100 meters, a 114-meter-long main boom was fitted to the crane.

While the rotor components were visually striking, they weighed slightly less than the generators, totaling 65 tonnes. Specialized equipment was used to maneuver the 40-meter-long rotor blades into a vertical position during the lifting process.

Meanwhile, the LR 1700-1.0 worked on erecting other wind turbines nearby, featuring a 99-meter main boom and a 12-meter jib set at a ten-degree angle to ensure ample lifting height.

Emphasizing the choice of Liebherr equipment, Managing Director Michael Egger noted, “All the crawler cranes in our fleet are from Liebherr. We rely completely on the Liebherr brand for crawler crane technology because these modern machines are extremely practical and user-friendly. The machines are simply ‘state of the art,’ and Liebherr’s service leaves little to be desired.”

Emphasizing their satisfaction with Liebherr’s support, Egger added, “If we have a major problem with our equipment, a mechanic is on-site within two hours. And that’s worth a lot.“

Despite challenging weather conditions and shorter daylight hours, the crane stood tall in just four days. Its dismantling will follow a similar expedited process during the upcoming January school holidays.

Boasting an impressive 80-meter jib length and a lifting capacity of 7.0 tons, the WOLFF 8060.25 Cross reigns as Austria’s most powerful construction crane. This extraordinary strength is harnessed to transport materials, equipment, and even hefty prefabricated elements, such as entire staircases, between Prätoriusgasse and the construction site. This approach significantly reduces the need to utilize the construction road through the botanical garden, aligning perfectly with the project’s environmental conservation goals.

The renovation of the European Patent Office’s 50-year-old building goes beyond aesthetics. Steil Kranarbeiten GmbH & Co KG, located in Homburg, Saarland, has successfully kept the Schlossberg Hotel open during construction by utilizing a Liebherr LTM 1150-5.3 mobile crane. This specific crane’s compact design made it the perfect choice, as no other mobile crane in its load class could match its size and capabilities. Ensuring access for hotel guests, suppliers, and emergency vehicles was crucial throughout the project.
The challenge for Steil Kranarbeiten was the need for a 65-meter radius, an underground tunnel system, and limited space. The task involved lifting significant materials over the hotel building to construct a 220-square-meter terrace. The presence of 17th-century tunnels beneath the site ruled out positioning the mobile crane close to the construction area.

Frank Nicklas, head of Steil’s Saarwellingen branch, had meticulously planned the project and selected the LTM 1150-5.3 from their extensive crane fleet. This yellow-painted fleet comprises around 120 cranes, including mobile, crawler, and special cranes. Nicklas recognized that the LTM 1150-5.3 was the ideal choice due to its large radius and the space it would leave for hotel operations and deliveries.

With the help of the LTM 1150-5.3 and its innovative VarioBase system, the team completed approximately 150 lifts over two weeks. The crane’s precision was vital, as it handled suspended construction elements, including one-tonne steel girders.

The success of this project has prompted Steil Kranarbeiten to acquire another LTM 1150-5.3, ensuring they have the right machine for future jobs. This crane will be stationed at their Saarwellingen branch, further enhancing their capabilities. Steil Kranarbeiten, with 250 employees and locations in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Luxembourg, continues to demonstrate its expertise in crane and heavy-load operations.

Manufactured in caissoniers or floating docks at sea, these caissons are subsequently transported to their ultimate destinations.

Jaso Tower Cranes, a prominent player in the construction industry, has left an indelible mark on over 80 floating caisson projects worldwide. Collaborating with renowned construction companies such as Acciona, Sacyr, Grupo Puentes, Dragados, SATO, OHL, Fomento, and FCC, they have contributed to ports’ development across the globe, including Algeciras, Sagunto, Cartagena, Gijón, and Rota. Notably, their caissons have found their way to international destinations like Sweden, Indonesia, Aberdeen, and the port of Algiers.

One of their most recent achievements is the Kugira project by Acciona, which, in 2022, saw the construction of six colossal floating caissons at Punta Langosteira, A Coruña. This landmark project established the site as the largest floating caisson dock in Europe. These imposing caissons stretched 60 meters in length, spanned 24 meters in width, and weighed a staggering 15 tons each. To bring this vision to life, Jaso Tower Cranes relied on the formidable capabilities of two High Top cranes supplied by their distributor, Alfeco. The J300N.A, equipped with a 75-meter reach, a maximum load capacity of 12 tons, and 2.7 tons of tip load, worked in tandem with a J110N crane with a reach of 55 meters and an impressive 8-ton maximum load capacity. These cranes, known for their precision and ease of assembly, proved ideal for the demanding requirements of this project, which included handling substantial yet delicate loads.

In Bilbao, another collaboration with Alfeco resulted in the successful completion of numerous floating caisson projects. Once again, Jaso Tower Cranes harnessed the capabilities of the J300N.A and J110N models, alongside two J145.A cranes boasting a 60-meter reach, 8 tons of maximum load capacity, and 2 tons of tip load.

Further underscoring their prowess in the field, Jaso Tower Cranes has been involved in approximately 30 projects in the Canary Islands. They have deployed a variety of caisson types tailored to each port’s specific requirements. Sarens has played a pivotal role in the construction of what is set to become one of Africa’s highest bridges, the Al Hadarat Bridge in Cairo. Over the course of several weeks, Sarens executed two lifting operations on behalf of Arab Contractors, bringing the bridge project one step closer to completion.

In the initial phase, Sarens successfully lifted and installed eleven massive steel beams, each weighing 150 tonnes and stretching 41 meters in length. To accomplish this, the crew utilized a CC4800 crane configured for SSL (Super Slim Lift) with a 66-meter main boom and 270T SL CW. After carefully hoisting each beam from its original position, the crane was expertly maneuvered into its designated location. The dedicated four-person team flawlessly executed eleven such lifts over the course of a single week.

The choice of equipment for these lifts was crucial, and it performed admirably throughout the operation. The CC4800 crane was transported to the site following its completion of a prior project. Rigging preparations consumed five days, with the team working within extremely confined spaces, at times having only a mere 10cm of clearance.

For the subsequent series of lifts, Sarens deployed the CC2600H crane, equipped with a 78-meter main boom, for another challenging high-altitude operation. The same four-person crew then installed 63 beams, each weighing a substantial 90 tonnes and measuring an impressive 50 meters in length. After carefully lifting each beam from the trailer, the team adeptly positioned it into place, successfully completing 63 such lifts within a span of three weeks.

Once again, the choice of crane was paramount due to its capacity, and precise positioning was a critical aspect of the planning phase, given the necessity for a series of tightly coordinated lifts. The crane was brought to the site following its completion of a prior project, and rigging preparations took three days. The crane’s positioning was particularly challenging, with only a scant 15cm of clearance in its immediate surroundings.

Working in close collaboration with the client, project manager Mohamed Abd El Nasser and country manager Essam Adel ensured meticulous attention to detail, from determining the number of lifts required to pinpointing exact lifting locations during installation.

Despite contending with some challenging winds, the team successfully carried out the lifts necessary for this iconic project. The world’s gaze is fixed upon the Al Hadarat Bridge project, and Sarens takes immense pride in its role in bringing this remarkable endeavor to fruition!

Among them, two MRT159-8t tower cranes boast 44m jib lengths and tower heights of 47.2m and 67.8m. The remaining MRT159 and MRT152 sport a 38m radius and heights of 64.9m and 47.3m, respectively.

Edward Seager highlighted the advantage of employing flat-top saddle jib cranes, particularly when multiple cranes are in close proximity. This choice minimizes required height differences and enhances load lifting efficiency compared to traditional A-frame crane solutions. Moreover, the shorter tower height reduces environmental impact and lowers project costs by decreasing base loadings, thus reducing steel and concrete requirements.

Raimondi cranes’ 2.5m boom length sections offer precise jib configurations – 2 x 44m and 2 x 38m – optimizing space utilization and maximizing load handling efficiency. The cranes are expected to remain operational for another 12 months, contributing to the transformation of a former gasworks and overflow airport car park into a thriving nature-oriented space for the local community.

The acquisition of Matthey-Petit SA represents a significant strategic move for Mediaco, a family-owned and independent group based in Marseille. Vienna’s bustling Mariahilfer Straße, known as “Mahü” to locals, is set to introduce a new shopping destination. The Lamarr department store, named after Austrian film icon Hedy Lamarr, will be constructed on the site of the former Leiner furniture store. The modern yet traditional-style department store will include a hotel, restaurants, and a publicly accessible green roof garden. To build the structure, Austrian contractor Habau Hoch- und Tiefbaugesellschaft purchased a WOLFF 8033.16 Cross crane, which will work alongside two other WOLFF cranes. The construction of the building shell is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Due to the location’s high foot traffic in downtown Vienna, a unique crane solution was necessary. Wolffkran devised a crane concept where the WOLFF 8033.16 was first erected using a mobile crane. This crane was then employed to install the WOLFF 7532.16 Cross, which, in turn, erected the flattop WOLFF 6023.8 Clear crane. This strategic approach minimized the use of a mobile crane on the busy shopping street. Overcoming challenges, such as limited space and neighboring buildings, required careful planning and coordination with Wolffkran.

The cranes were installed at the beginning of 2022 and have been crucial in transporting concrete, formwork, and reinforcement for the construction of the in-situ concrete shell. However, the most challenging phase awaits when the final crane needs to be dismantled. Due to the tight construction space, the WOLFF 7532.16 and the WOLFF 6023.8 cannot be dismantled using a mobile crane. The WOLFF 7532.16 will first dismantle the WOLFF 6023.8, and then the 8033.16 will dismantle the 7532.16. This process involves splitting the 13-tonne counter jib into two parts, requiring careful handling and support structures.
Habau and Wolffkran have a long-standing collaboration and have worked on various projects together. The Lamarr project is expected to be completed by 2024, joining their portfolio of successful endeavors, such as the Harbor Portal in Linz and the Vienna Twenty Two residential quarter.

The addition of four Raimondi MRT111s, one MRT159, and three MRT294s brings the total count of Raimondi cranes employed on the project to 22.
Expected to remain on-site for approximately 14 to 16 more months, these crane models were specifically chosen based on their technical specifications, compliance with the contractor’s requirements, and the demanding project timeline.

“We selected cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 8 to 14 tons, and maximum lifting speeds of 136 m/min,” explained Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Middle East. Due to the high number of cranes to be installed and the congested nature of the site, careful planning and positioning were essential to avoid any overlap, Hasan added.

The four MRT111s-8tn are currently operating with a jib length of 36 meters and final heights of 60 and 48 meters. These versatile cranes offer excellent performance in terms of load capacity and hoisting speed, equipped with a 30kW hoist and a drum capacity of 450 meters, lifting at a maximum speed of 100m/min.

Featuring a jib length of 44 meters and a 45kW hoist power, the MRT159-8tn has been erected with a maximum lifting speed of 136m/min and a final height of 66 meters. This flat-top crane is renowned for its exceptional load diagram and ease of installation.

Sharing the same maximum lifting speed as the MRT159, the three MRT294s on-site boast a hoisting gear of 73.5kW, a maximum lifting capacity of 14 tons, and final heights of 54 and 60 meters. These cranes, erected with jib lengths of 36 and 60 meters, exhibit outstanding performance and durability in various climatic conditions.

The Raimondi Middle East operations team will continue to provide support for the construction of the Sokoon buildings, conducting monthly maintenance checks and performing necessary crane climbing procedures as the project progresses, concluded Hasan.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity, Liebherr dealer Kranimex and heavy haulage specialist Tech-Mont tackle the obstacle of restricted access in Bratislava, Slovakia by employing an unconventional assembly method. A 40 LC top-slewing crane is airlifted into the city center via helicopter to aid in the construction of new apartments.

The project site, located in a burgeoning area with limited road access, presented unique challenges, including protruding edges of neighboring buildings and the disruption caused by tram traffic. A conventional assembly method using a mobile crane would have necessitated the suspension of public transport and the costly dismantling and reinstallation of tram power lines. However, the collaboration between Kranimex and Tech-Mont found an innovative solution in helicopter assembly.

Over the course of two days, using an MI-8T helicopter with a lifting capacity of three tonnes, the crane components, including tower sections, jib, and counter jib, were carefully transported from a temporary storage location near the Danube to the construction site, flying over the city’s rooftops. With eleven flights in total, even the heaviest crane part, a 2,750-kilogram slewing platform, was effortlessly lifted into place. Skilled service fitters from Kranimex received the airlifted components and completed the assembly of the top-slewing crane.

Patrik Šeba, service fitter from Liebherr dealer Kranimex, emphasizes the significance of strong and reliable teamwork in achieving this exceptional assembly, having previously collaborated with Tech-Mont on two other projects.

The Liebherr 40 LC crane, with a hook height of 30 meters and a jib spanning just under 25 meters, boasts a maximum lifting capacity of 4,000 kilograms. To optimize space, the crane is mounted on foundation anchors and features the narrow 63 LC tower system, with external dimensions of only 1.2 x 1.2 meters. Despite being built in 2006, the top-slewing crane continues to demonstrate its reliability, a testament to the exceptional quality and durability of Liebherr machines.

Expected to remain in operation until the end of 2023 for the residential project in Bratislava’s city center, the crane’s compact dimensions allow it to navigate the site effortlessly, facilitating various lifting operations such as the movement of bricks and concrete. Once its work is complete, the crane will be dismantled by helicopter, making its return journey over the rooftops of Bratislava.

Liebherr Crane Revitalizes Historic Church In Bad Reichenhall

Renovation work in the picturesque town of Bad Reichenhall, Germany, is taking place against the backdrop of majestic mountains. The focal point of the project is the restoration of the 12th-century parish church of St. Zeno, a listed historical building. However, the challenging ground conditions surrounding the church posed a significant obstacle. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Tradler-Baumaschinen and Liebherr, a suitable solution was devised to ensure the smooth operation of a top-slewing crane at the church site.

The primary concern revolved around the unstable ground caused by the adjacent cemetery. Furthermore, due to the constraints imposed by the cemetery, the crane and its substructure could only be positioned on the pathways between the graves. Overcoming this dilemma required an innovative approach. The solution involved the utilization of a gantry, a steel construction that provided unrestricted access beneath the crane. A concrete foundation with cement grout-injected micropiles was established, upon which a 6 x 6 meter gantry was placed. These micropiles, with a diameter of less than 30 centimeters, enabled the use of smaller and lighter drilling equipment. The paths were the only areas where foundations were set, ensuring the preservation of the graves. Subsequently, a mobile crane mounted a 250 EC-B flat-top crane with a 21 HC tower system and undercarriage onto the gantry. This configuration offered stability to the crane and allowed it to operate effectively above the graves.

This successful implementation was made possible by the longstanding partnership between Tradler-Baumaschinen and Liebherr. Konrad Kracher, a sales representative at Tradler-Baumaschinen GmbH, expressed his confidence in the partnership, stating, “Liebherr and Tradler-Baumaschinen have enjoyed a successful and trusted partnership for decades.” Alexander Beck, the Area Sales Manager at Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Tradler-Baumaschinen’s reliable and customized service to customers. The inclusion of LiConnect quick connectors facilitated the attachment of the jib, counter-jib, and other components to the compact head with slewing platform, cabin, and switchgear cabinet.

The Liebherr 250 EC-B crane deployed in Bad Reichenhall boasts a hook height of nearly 51 meters and a 65-meter-long jib. With a jib head lifting capacity of up to 2,850 kilograms and a maximum lifting capacity of twelve tonnes, this top-slewing crane proves to be a powerful tool for the project. Intelligent assistance systems like Micromove assist the crane operator in precise and smooth placement of building materials, crucial for preserving the integrity of the listed church.

Throughout the anticipated year-long renovation period, the tower crane will be involved in various tasks. Initially, it will assist in erecting scaffolding and a temporary roof system. As the project progresses, the top-slewing crane will remove a portion of the protective roof each day, allowing for the movement of materials within the roof truss. Given the reinforcement of the existing roof truss with structural steelwork, frequent transportation of heavy steel elements and other building materials will be necessary.

MAXIKraft Expands Crane Fleet With Liebherr LR 11000

MAXIKraft has recently added another Liebherr LR 11000 crawler crane to its fleet, making it the third of its kind in their lineup. The company values the exceptional versatility of this 1,000-tonne machine from the renowned Liebherr factory in Ehingen. In its inaugural operation, the crane successfully assembled a Vestas 5.6 MW wind turbine at the Dünfus wind farm near Cochem, lifting components weighing up to 100 tonnes to a height of 170 meters.

Maik Kanitzky, the owner of MAXIKraft, explains the investment decision, stating, “With its special configurations, the LR 11000 offers enormous lifting capacities for wind power assemblies. But it also offers flexible deployment options for other applications.” MAXIKraft utilizes multiple large lattice boom cranes manufactured in Ehingen, including LG 1750, LR 1700-1.0, LR 1800-1.0, and LR 11000 models. Steffen Lehmann, responsible for the deployment of these large cranes at MAXIKraft, emphasizes the importance of the highly flexible set-up versions and boom combinations offered by Liebherr’s lattice boom cranes. He praises the LICCON2 control system, which provides real-time information on various parameters such as load, winch pull, boom position, ground pressure, and center of gravity.

The brand new LR 11000’s maiden task took it to the Dünfus wind farm, where MAXIKraft was entrusted with erecting a Vestas 5.6 MW wind turbine. This impressive turbine boasts a rotor diameter of 150 meters, a hub height of 169 meters, and an overall height of 244 meters, making it one of Germany’s most powerful wind turbines. The heaviest component, weighing approximately 100 tonnes, is the gondola.

On April 19, crane operator Marco G. successfully lifted the gondola onto the tower using a special yoke, following approval from the site manager. This operation was estimated to take around two hours. The decision to employ crawler cranes was particularly advantageous due to the crane’s ability to travel about 20 meters on excavator mats to reach the assembly position. For the Dünfus project, MAXIKraft configured the LR 11000 with a Liebherr 8-cylinder 500 kW engine, utilizing the SL10DF2BV set-up version with a 162-meter main boom, a 21-meter lattice-type fixed jib, and a 42-meter derrick boom. The crane comes standard with six winches, which control the movement of two hook blocks, the luffing gear for the main boom and luffing jib, as well as the V-frame for ballast positioning.

After the completion of the last rotor blade assembly, the 1,000-tonne machine was disassembled and will be transported to the next site using over 50 trucks. The compact dimensions of the crane components, with a maximum width of 3.5 meters and a height of 3.2 meters, facilitate efficient transportation. The rapid expansion of wind power generation is expected to provide numerous spectacular opportunities for the blue/silver MAXIKraft crawler cranes. Celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, MAXIKraft and its group of companies possess extensive experience in crane services and heavy transport. Their fleet comprises telescopic, lattice, and crawler cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 25 to 1,000 tonnes, alongside road transport technology capable of carrying payloads of up to 300 tonnes. Konecranes has been contracted to supply The Port of Virginia with 36 advanced Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs) as part of the port’s ongoing efforts to boost its operational efficiency, capacity, and competitiveness in the global shipping market. The EUR 130 million order, scheduled to be booked in Q2 2023, is for the Norfolk International Terminals North Terminal project and will be delivered in two batches of 18 units. The initial batch is expected to arrive by mid-2025, with the second batch anticipated to follow by mid-2027.

The Virginia Port Authority, which owns and operates The Port of Virginia’s five general cargo terminals, has long trusted Konecranes to deliver reliable and effective terminal solutions.
