The Gambsheim Rhine lock, which facilitates the passage of nearly 100 ships daily, is undergoing a comprehensive four-year renovation. This involves lifting out and reinstalling massive lock gates, a process requiring precision and expertise. During the recent installation, space constraints necessitated a complex lifting process with the Liebherr cranes. The meticulous maneuvering of the gate demanded intense focus from crane operators Klaus Himmelsbach and Ralf Göltzer. The use of innovative technology, including the LICCON work planner, facilitated the smooth execution of the operation. The project involved lifting out old bridge sections and placing new 285-ton bridge parts on freshly constructed abutments. The old bridge, dating back to 1912, spanned the Riß, a tributary of the Danube in Upper Swabia, with abutments three decades older. Originally, the plan was to construct a new bridge west of the old one, but environmental concerns led to a change. Instead, the new bridge was built to the east on a meadow using prefabricated parts, lifted into place by the 750-tonne crawler crane LR 1750/2. Salcef Bau GmbH awarded the contract to RIGA MAINZ, and the project faced tight space conditions. Owner Uwe Langer noted, “The LR 1750/2 was the optimum crane size for this job. It is compact and yet powerful.” Two large drilling machines created twelve bored piles for the new abutments. After lifting, the bridge sections were cast with concrete into the abutments, resulting in a ten-meter-wide and twenty-meter-long structure. Despite the challenges, the assembly and crawler crane teams completed the reconstruction efficiently. The railway line was closed for only five days during the project, showcasing the precision and effectiveness of the LR 1750/2. To minimize disruptions at the busy government site, the decision to mount the cranes on a ballast base was crucial. This approach eliminated the need for extensive excavation work required for permanent footings. Additionally, the LRH174’s hydraulic luffing system operates quietly compared to traditional mechanical luffers. The LRH174 is designed for ease of installation, contributing to efficient onsite operations. Ground-level assembly of the crane’s jib, hoisting winch, and rope reeving streamlines the process. Notably, the LRH174’s compact 10-meter out-of-service boom is ideal for narrow jobsites, and its hydraulic system ensures smooth and swift luffing movement. Michael Clark noted the increasing demand for luffing jib cranes like the LRH174, particularly in projects with oversailing issues where the 10-meter out-of-service radius proves invaluable during decision-making. However, recent developments in the Jura mountain range in the canton of Vaud, near the French border, have added six new wind turbines to the landscape. These turbines, boasting a combined output of 13.8 MWh, were installed during the summer months using cutting-edge equipment from Liebherr, a renowned crane manufacturer. Emil Egger AG, a crane company, deployed its two most powerful hoisting units, the LR 1700-1.0 and the LR 11000, to navigate the challenging terrain at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. The heaviest lifts occurred during the installation of the generators, with the LR 11000 handling a massive 71-tonne load, including the hook block and slings. To tackle the towering assembly heights of around 100 meters, a 114-meter-long main boom was fitted to the crane. While the rotor components were visually striking, they weighed slightly less than the generators, totaling 65 tonnes. Specialized equipment was used to maneuver the 40-meter-long rotor blades into a vertical position during the lifting process. Meanwhile, the LR 1700-1.0 worked on erecting other wind turbines nearby, featuring a 99-meter main boom and a 12-meter jib set at a ten-degree angle to ensure ample lifting height. Emphasizing the choice of Liebherr equipment, Managing Director Michael Egger noted, “All the crawler cranes in our fleet are from Liebherr. We rely completely on the Liebherr brand for crawler crane technology because these modern machines are extremely practical and user-friendly. Currently, Matthey-Petit Levage boasts an impressive fleet of 110 pieces of equipment, including 25 cranes ranging from 40 to 500 tons (Terex AC500), 4 Liebherr MK cranes with capacities from 88 to 140 tons, and 2 Spierings AT6 cranes. The company operates from two locations, Geneva and Lausanne, ensuring effective service coverage. With an annual turnover of 15 million euros, Matthey-Petit SA operates a modern fleet consisting of 25 cranes, 23 tractors, 52 heavy trailers for exceptional transports, and 11 truck-mounted cranes capable of lifting up to 120T/m. The acquisition of Matthey-Petit SA represents a significant strategic move for Mediaco, a family-owned and independent group based in Marseille. It not only fortifies the company’s presence abroad but also complements its existing four agencies in Germany, established between 2015 and 2020. This acquisition underlines Mediaco’s strong determination and ambition for international growth. Looking ahead, Mediaco plans to expand its Swiss subsidiary by acquiring new equipment in 2024, including 5 cranes ranging from 60 to 450 tons, 3 truck-mounted cranes with capacities up to 145t/m, and two complementary mobile tower cranes known as “MK.” A comprehensive development plan encompassing organic and external growth will be implemented to support the growth of Matthey-Petit Levage in Switzerland and offer customers the latest and most efficient machinery available in the market.
