Twin Towers In Frankfurt Undergo Modernization With Crane Operation

Frankfurt am Main’s iconic Kastor and Pollux towers, named after Greek mythology’s inseparable brothers, are undergoing a significant upgrade. In a carefully orchestrated operation, a crane with a 120-meter boom was brought in to replace chiller units atop the Kastor tower.
The operation, executed by crane and heavy haulage contractor Eisele AG, required precise planning and execution. Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, a main road in Frankfurt, had to be fully closed to accommodate the crane’s setup. The LTM 1650-8.1 crane, assembled in a T3YV2EN configuration with 150 tonnes of ballast and a 77-meter luffing jib, began its work at 23:00 on a Friday evening.
Challenges arose due to the presence of an underground railway line beneath the crane site, limiting support pressure to two tonnes per square meter. A combination of steel plates and bongossi timbers was employed to distribute the load effectively.
The lifting operation commenced at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the crane extending its boom to 51 meters to reach the required height of 120 meters. The task involved removing old chillers from the 95-meter-high Kastor tower and installing new units to modernize the building’s air conditioning system, completed in 1997.
Despite the complexity, all work had to be finished by Sunday to reopen the road for Monday morning traffic. The logistical feat required precise coordination and swift execution, marking a successful modernization endeavor for the iconic Frankfurt skyline.

Dino Wachsbaum of Thömen Schwertransport und Krantechnik GmbH expresses delight over the successful operation of the LR 1800-1.0, an 800-tonne Liebherr crawler crane, during the assembly of two railway bridges in Berlin’s Neukölln district. The BTT-E wireless remote control played a crucial role in the efficient setup and dismantling of the heavy-duty crane in the confined space.
Thömen, the heavy haulage and crane company, secured a contract from Deutsche Bahn to lift two bridges for the Berlin S-Bahn expansion project in May 2023. Facing limited space for the crane and requiring seamless logistical planning, Thömen professionals utilized the LR 1800-1.0 with precision, employing 90 tonnes of central ballast, 230 tonnes of slewing platform ballast, and a 42-meter-long main boom.
The LR 1800-1.0, renowned for its power and global transportability, boasts a transport width of three meters and a maximum weight of 45 tonnes. Equipped with the LICCON2 control system and the BTT-E remote control, the crane’s superstructure can be operated remotely, enhancing monitoring and efficiency in assembly processes.
During the operation, the LR 1800-1.0 flawlessly lifted two bridges, with load cases of 125 tonnes and 160 tonnes, respectively. The first bridge was installed during a night-time S-Bahn closure, while the second remained in use for ongoing railway operations. Dino Wachsbaum praised the crane’s performance, stating, ‘The operation went smoothly, and I’m delighted with the LR 1800-1.0. In general, I’m very satisfied with the overall Liebherr package.‘

Scottish marine services company, PSG Marine & Logistics (PSG), has become the proud recipient of the first Grove GRT8100-1 rough-terrain crane in the United Kingdom. PSG specializes in offering lifting, transport, and logistics solutions to the offshore and marine sectors in the Scottish Highlands, and this new addition to their fleet is set to play a pivotal role in supporting quayside logistical operations for clients in the marine, offshore oil and gas, and offshore wind energy industries.
The procurement of this cutting-edge crane transpired during the Vertikal Days 2023 exhibition held in Peterborough, England. PSG boasts a longstanding association with Grove cranes and was particularly drawn to the GRT8100-1 for its efficiency, time-saving advantages, and robust pick-and-carry capabilities.
Steve Clark, a representative from PSG, shared his insights on the decision, stating, “We have run a Grove RT600E rough-terrain crane for many years and it has delivered reliable and productive service. In particular, it offers great time savings with its pick-and-carry capabilities. The crane’s performance combined with the excellent support we receive from Crowland Cranes and Manitowoc convinced us to invest in the GRT8100-1.”
Crowland Cranes, PSG’s trusted regional Grove dealer, played a pivotal role in facilitating the acquisition of the new crane. Working closely with Manitowoc Cranes UK sales manager Derek Kidd, they ensured the smooth delivery of the latest addition to PSG’s equipment roster.
The Grove GRT8100-1 boasts an impressive 100-ton capacity, equipped with a 47-meter main boom and a maximum tip height of up to 72.9 meters when utilizing the optional jib. It stands out as a class leader, offering exceptional load charts. This crane ingeniously combines the broad cab and carrier of the 120-ton capacity Grove GRT8120 with the superstructure of the GRT8100, resulting in improved operational efficiency, easier maintenance, and enhanced jobsite flexibility. Furthermore, it is fitted with a value package, including a 10.1-meter to 17.1-meter offsettable bi-fold lattice swingaway extension, a 360° mechanical positive swing lock, and an Auxiliary Hoist Package.
Clark expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to be the first company in the UK to receive one of these models and can’t wait to put it to work.” This acquisition is set to further bolster PSG’s capabilities in providing top-notch services to the marine and offshore industries in the Scottish Highlands.

PORT OF ARENDAL IN NORWAY TAKES DELIVERY OF A NEW LHM 550

Port of Arendal, located in the southern part of Norway between Larvik and Kristiansand, took a delivery of a new LHM 550 from Liebherr. With a lifting capacity of up to 144 tonnes, this mobile harbour crane offers the port the ability to support larger project and special cargo, as well as optimised bulk operations. The main commercial terminal for the port is located at Eydehavn, just outside the city of Arendal. Eydehavn is a harbour that offers cranes and handling equipment for bulk loads, project cargo, offshore equipment, and containers.
The four-rope version of the LHM 550 that was delivered to the client in Arendal will provide flexible applications for cargo and material lifting. For increased efficiency in handling bulk cargo, a suitable grab that is coupled with Liebherr’s SmartGrip technology was part of the crane’s delivery. This feature can optimise the filling rate of the grab in a self-learning manner. In this way, SmartGrip learns after just a few lifting cycles how to optimise capacity utilisation of the grab. This reduces overloads to a minimum, increases the material handling rate and, at the same time, alleviates crane operator stress. Bulk material such as salt and sulphur will be among the main resources that will be handled by the LHM 550. A forthcoming project in the area that will benefit from the crane’s optimisations is a new battery factory by Morrow Batteries.
Rune Hvass, Port Director at Arendal Havn, notes: “After deliberations about which LHM model fits our logistical needs the best, we ultimately decided on the LHM 550. An increasing number of customers are demanding capacity for larger and heavier project and general cargo. To also provide better support for a new battery factory that will be built locally, the choice for a larger mobile harbour crane made most sense.” Rune Hvass continues: “The high-quality level at which Liebherr is building its cranes, and especially the service concept Liebherr provides, were some of the main reasons why we decided to purchase a Liebherr mobile harbour crane.”
To help reduce noise, the crane is equipped with noise insulation material in the winch and machinery compartment. The crane is also equipped with an e-drive to enable local CO2-emission-free operation. In addition, the complete LiDAT smartApp package was chosen for the LHM 550. The LiDAT modules such as Maintenance and Optimise help monitor a variety of variables for better performance tracking and efficiency of the crane.
